Many stations early in November 2010 recorded their highest ever November temperature.. 1 or 2 weeks later.. their lowest November temperatures were broken.. things change quickly, nothing is written in stone.

I think I will take a punt on 6.5C, with no real cold arriving until December.

Cheers

Just noted your stats for autumn so far - very high minima so far, the fact the lowest you have recorded so far is only 5.6 degrees and way back on 15 Sept is indicative of the cloudy windy fest of weather we have endured so far this year. I was away last week - am surprised you didn't see lower temps than 5.6 degrees at some stage last week. Hopefully November will deliver some frosts and sub 0 degree nights or at least 2 and 3 degree minima with slight ground frost - this autumn so far has been very poor for cool nightime minima.

Going to go with... 6.2*C. Have a feeling the month will start out very warm with a powerful wall of high-pressure to the East with mild Southerly/South-Westerly winds. I think eventually a strong area of Low-Preesure from West will be forced to slip South-Eastwards as it approaches the UK, with a Southerly tracking Jet Stream, and become powerful enough to break away the barrier to the East. A possible chance of wintry weather eventually as winds blow from the North-East/North with temperatures becoming below average. :)

All just a guess, although admittedly, some of this was inspired by some of the member's great Winter forecasts I read here (he hee).

Looking like a fairly mild if not very mild and zonal start to November. I expect this to continue for the first 2/3rds of November with the odd Pm incursion. I suspect the last third of November will involve lower heights to our east and south, leading to much cooler but unsettled conditions, with the chance of a northerly incursion at the end of the month. 7.1C

Do I smell the return of an active Atlantic during November? Much as it goes against the grain I'll guess at 7.0c

And hopefully about 200mm of rain.

Learnt a lot in the last month or two about British weather, weather systems and influences on the climate from this site.

The CET certainly does bounce around a lot, the extremes are quite surprising.

My estimate for Nov ( from a real novice ) is 7.7.

Then very cold and snowy afterwards !

My thoughts for November -

All signals are suggesting a mild start to November - but nothing exceptional it has to be said. I do think it will be a generally mild month overall but with some colder settled conditions in the second half thanks to stronger heights building over the country from the east bringing some cold nights (but not necessarily particularly cold days).

I suspect it will be another wet month for the north and west- nothing unusual here, but unlike recent months the south and east will see at least average rainfall thanks to frontal activity making it to the east on more occasions than recently - at least during the first half of the month.

My guess is 7.7 degrees, mind my guesses this year have been terrible it has to be said. I will be very surprised if we see a below average month, but we could end up nearer the average if we see some stronger ridging of heights later in the month pulling in some colder continental air.

In terms of snowfall - predominantly reserved for northern hills, but chance of some temporary low level snowfall in scotland and n england particularly more eastern parts thanks to polar maritime air making inroads from time to time more especially mid month - with a chance of a decent northerly perhaps occuring at this stage as we finally loose those stubborn heights out to our east.

So in summary I'm expecting a fairly unsettled wet and mild first half for all, chance of some cooler unsettled conditions mid month more so in the north with a possible early wintry blast - but shortlived, becoming increasingly more settled during the second half of the month especially for the south and east with some cold nights and pleasant days as we see heights develop from the east which if strong enough could introduce some colder days as well thanks to fog - Scotland and N ireland more likely to hold onto cloudier damp and milder conditions. A preety typical November not the rainfest of 2009 or the extremes of last year - just very standard.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
