First Snowfall Of The Winter In Any Settlement

Snow being reported in Lerwick 1000hrs with temps of 6C.

At the end of August we had an unofficial report of sleet in Altnaharra, although this time snow in Lerwick seems a little bit more feasable (but 6c is still quite warm).

Last year, there was another early report of snow in Altnaharra in September, the next snowfall and first -5C line arrived on the 20th October.

Tommorow has a decent oppurtunity for snow in parts of Scotland so I expect a few more reports.

Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands had snow overnight. The air temperature was 3C, so this seems more believable. I viewed Traffic Scotland last night too, and I could see snow on the ground.

Someone on here lives in the Shetlands so I'm sure we should find out soon whether it has snowed up there.

Mount Keen is visible from my office in Westhill just west of Aberdeen and it covered in snow today.

Hard to tell what the actual snowline is though - this is the most easterly Munro at 939m...at a guess I'd say between 800-850m

I know it's not a settlement, just an observation!

Doesn't appear snowy even in Shetland yet.

Had a sleet shower here this morning, temperature read just 2°C in the car!

I actually could of sworn we had sleet in a torrential downpour this afternoon. The air temperature was 6C, so I'm not sure how reliable my observation is.

Did look like 20p sized wet flakes mixed in with a load of rain!

I saw the odd spot of precipitation which looked sleet-ish during a shower, just me being a bit too hopeful I think!

The cold uppers aren't far enough south for even sleet in Northern England today I don't think, unless you're above 700-800m or something. Tomorrow there is a brief window of opportunity for wintry showers, but it should remain dry. I'll believe that something wintry fell in Aviemore though, I've experienced a white frost in August before in Carrbridge!

I saw Ben Lomond covered in snow earlier today. Tommorow I'll be in Aviemore and I could be freezing under -6C temperatures on Wednesday Night according to the BBC.

Surely this can't be right?

I shouldn't think so, perhaps a few degrees warmer than that but I'd imagine -3'C or so - a nice frost all the same! :)

Not sure why some are doubting there being snow at 6c, it is more than possible with cold enough upper air temperatures and heavy enough precipitation.

Yesterday I heard reports of snow in central Manchester.I was in the suburbs and probably in bed so I don't know, though later that day I saw Hail which could possibly have been mistaken for snow.

Yes ,I was thinking the same thing and I have witnesed snow at 6c before.Usually in spring for some reason.
