RAF Woodbridge fell to -9.2c on the morning of the 3rd. RAF Bentwaters Royal didn't pass -5.3c on the 1st. RAF Fairford fell to -9.8c on the 2nd. RAF Lakenheath fell to -12c on the 2nd. RAF Upper Heyford only managed -5.3c on the 1st and fell to -9.2c on the 1st and 2nd.

Interesting thanks for that. I assume snow wasn't particularly widespread or deep meaning temps didn't drop to exceptionally low values (i.e -18c or -20's).

I would never get snow off that nowadays, looks like a snowfest for high levels only in the south? all levels for Scotland and north

I do remember this event it also coincided with the Braer Tanker incident. I remember the forecasts of very heavy snow showers in Scotland. In the Lake District the fells received a fair bit of snow, but uppers and dew points were too warm for the snow to settle on lower ground. Winter 92/93 on the whole was very dissapointing on the snow front, December whilst cold in the second half brought very dry conditions with only a little snow mid-month, though it was preety frosty, Jan 93 saw a wintry mix early on but faded into mild wet muck, and Feb 93 was very mild though there was some widespread snow at the tail end. It came after the dire winter of 91/92 and I remember longing for snow at the time, alas we saw a much better winter in 93/94.

Tbh the chart you posted would probably be a bit more cloudier than you might think on first glance. There is still the possibility of snow showers running in eastern areas from Yorkshire downwards and there will be frontal cloud edging in from the West looking at that chart. Maybe thats why the temps never fallen as low as you might think?

My perfect synoptics in all seasons range from Cool Maritime Polar Zonality from the Atlantic to very cold Continental Polar air from the North Pole/Arctic via Northwest-Northeasterlies and from Europe via straight Easterlies.

Below are my perfect examples cold Continental Polar Easterlies straight from Europe:-
