Basically, a chart that symbolises your favourite synoptics - and resulting weather.

Your favourite day's weather in a chart...

Here's mine:

Not many charts I can show due to my young age - but this delivered for me big time!

That is the type of chart that i would love to see again although with the low a little further south.

23rd February 2005 both delivered about 10cm here from a stalled front for 12 hours and i am convinced that i could have had double that had the upper profile being much cooler (met office warnings were for 30cm).

That said, i will go for the event which delivered the most. 21cm from this single 10 hour event...

Have to post two charts as this event lasted 36 hours, giving me by the far the most snow I've ever witnessed, living as I did in a little village in mid-Wales:

IF, that chart looks class, seen it appear a few times, must have been widespread snow from the east,

yep - definitely a chart of wonder.

I'm determined to find an even better chart; but for now here is some summer warmth:

Don't have the chart to show, but Feb 6th 1996 was a super synoptic for snow in the Lake District.

Also Dec 28th 1995 was a great synoptic for deep seated cold in the North.

My personal favourite winter month of all for cold and snow...February 1947. Engaging weather systems producing countrywide snowfall and temperatures rarely getting above freezing. Puts any of the winters months of 1962/1963 to shame.

Interestingly, I'll compare a chart from the 19th February 1947 to a similar setup in February 2005. Notice how much colder the 1947 chart is;

I'd like to keep pressure high on the continent throughout the year but with a slight difference of having slack gradients and se winds during the summer and the hp miagrating during the winter a little further north to bring in easterlies with a tighter gradient caused by lows in the sw approaches to give some pretty snow scenes with DRY SNOW.

Can't abide wet damp weather except for the occasional thunderstorm in the summer.

That's why I am loving it so much down here at Capestang at the moment.

Brilliant Thread IS, so fun to see all these amazing charts.

Now its my turn for both Winter and summer, as I am only 18 years of age I can only go back to 1993, I am also going to find some ideal Spring and Autumn charts for extra interest biggrin.png

1st up Winter:

@Stormyking Some impressive looking Esterlies you've posted their. Especially love the look of the Feb 1963 and Feb 1986 ones with their very long draw of Easterly winds. Wonder how cold it must have been. ohmy.png

(will post one of my fav soon).

Edit: The chart which brought the early 2008 snowfall for Southern/Central areas (28th October 2008).

post-10703-0-77732000-1318518672_thumb.g

Upper air temps for the 28th.

post-10703-0-54995000-1318518791_thumb.g

The 29th October chart had the - 5 uppers covering practically the whole of the U.K.

Re-Edit: although this is not quite my most favourite synoptic ever, it's one of my favs for the late-October period. :)

What?

Where I lived (in south east England) it was sunny and 19°C. Under the very clear sunny conditions the diurnal range was as much as 15°C. No drizzle in sight.

http://www.tutiempo....-1998/37720.htm

"Very dry in the south, but wet in western and northern Scotland. Parts of the southeast had the sunniest February of the century. In an exceptionally mild spell mid-month (12-15th), the new record high for February was set: 19.7C at Greenwich (London) on the 13th, and also 19.6C in Worcester. " - Trevor Harley

http://www.personal....998_weather.htm

Feb 98 was extremely sunny in the SE, especially during this high pressure spell. At London Heathrow, nearest station to me, there was just 6.6mm of rain, and some 113.1 hrs sunshine during that wonderful February.

You cannot generalize what the weather was like from a synoptic chart like the one I posted, as you are liable to be wrong, like you were.

Oh sorry, I thought you were in Buxton when them charts occured. Apologies :)

I would imagine it was pretty sunny that day in Buxton anyway, it certainly was in Manchester that day and the following day. Amazing for February.

A small low zipping through with cold Arctic air, producing large snowfalls as happened with Christmas 1906

Rrea00119061226.gif

A stalling front against a block giving a lot of snow but with this case you have a very cold pool of air undercutting it so guaranteeing snow and dry snow at that.
