Heavt rain overnight and first thing this morning deposited 2 inches causing rivers to go into spate. Local roads affected by flooding, main roads such as A591 south of Kendal badly affected. The river Kent is very high.

Strong winds and further heavy showers throughout the day - a very late october feel to things.

September is starting off on a very wet note. Last nights synoptics show how vulnerable the Lake District is to sudden very heavy deluges lasting many hours - places to the east of the Pennines less than 50 miles from here barely scraped a few mms. A night like last night is very much par for the course in these parts under mobile westerly airstreams.
