I would have thought the first sign of winter-often mistaken, is when certain folk, missing through the summer half of the year begin to appear, No names mentioned but new folk will soon pick up on who they are, posters from previous years know them anyway!

Imo winter will always be Dec 1st so there is no such thing as 'first sign of winter' to me

Heating on, 1.8C last night with slight ground frost. Cloud Inversion up on Curber Edge this morning under blue sky's, winter in very close now!

The smell of frost was in the air this morning and that 'cold' high pressure type smell lingered all day as well.

Snow down to the hills in Scotland is generally what I look out for and now its not too far away by looks of things

Slight ground frost yesterday and today here, but this micro location is unusual (bottom of a deep valley) so it is always markedly colder in winter and hotter in summer than the surrounding areas.
