Very Dry Summer For Parts Of The Midlands!

The garden is still looking quite lush at the moment which is a suprise as this area is normally one of the driest parts of the country. However we did have a deluge earlier on in the month of at least an inch so i'd say the ground still has quite high water reserves further down. The surface is pretty firm though so i'd say if we were to get a lengthy dry and warm spell early September then the grass might start to show drought stress. I dont see that as such a bad thing as you can be pretty sure that come November the grass will have returned to its lush green colour, although farmers sowing their crops now will think otherwise. Only in exceptional circumstances in 2003 did the grass remain yellow until almost December. That September i remember the lawn looking completely dead and the soil more like sand.

If the GFS is right then next weeks rain will take pretty much exactly the same track as it has done in the last few days. Any proper rain is looking very unlikely for the West Midlands especially for August.

Somehow todays showers totally missed us though did observe what looked like a gust front/wall cloud of some kind. Tonights rain looks good for those in the central slice of the Midlands. Here may see a bit but it looks like light bits only. A lot of Brown grass etc now. The West Midlands is by far the driest part of the UK right now and probably for the year so far now.

We got a direct hit from that shower earlier which would make it the most significant bit of rain for around 2 months here, maybe 4mm of rain fell.

Tonight is looking good, but what the betting the band splits as it get nearer to us and goes either side lol!

It's dry here too. All months this year are below-average except February for rainfall. The last significant rainfall month here was November 2009 which had over 111 mm of rain.

A wet 24hrs for us in the end, started yesterday morning on 11mm total for the month and we are now upto 33mm, still on the dry side for August but no longer very dry.

Finally we had some good rain here at 12mm. However apart from that the outlook is relatively dry yet again.

Second highest rainfall since June here 15.2 mm so we're now up to 26% of rainfall for the month.

We are still stuck at around 40 mm for the entire month here so still below average, all months this year below average except for February and after that dry and warm spring all that rain in February seems to have no effect at all on the relatively dry ground here.

Haven't measured yesterdays yet but should be around 10-12 mm so after struggling for ages to get to past double figures we o it twice in three days. I think we're up to 40% of average.

August is desperately struggling to reach the average rainfall. Currently on 69.9 mm which is 88% of the 30 year average for the whole of August. A few heavy showers today would just about do it.

Okay got my sums wrong 11.4 mm Yesterday now 60.9% of average most of it in the last three days.

Not far off 30mm of rain here in the last 3 days, which was very welcome as it was getting rather dry again.

The highest rainfall totals for this month so far. 15.2, 11.4, 4.4 and then 1.9mm.

Bizarrely I've now got two wet brown looking lawns, Some of the trees have lost nearly all the leaves while others have kept them. Going to be a very strange autumn here and if it goes back to being dry as the ECM and now the GFS suggests I suspect trees will resume the early leave shredding.

Dodged all the downpours this past week here, im not sure how much rain has fallen this month (i was away the first week to) but judging by everywhere having yellow grass its been pretty exceptionally dry here.

Indeed Conor, Shropshire has dodged the rain this month, with a county average of just 27mm so far, and little more expected (this data from the Netweather Extra rainfall totals feature).

We're currently running at about 38 mm this month — it still seems very dry here despite being above the average for the county.

dry today upto 5.30pm, been dryish summer, although northern parts had flooding, this thread has popped up out of nowhere!
