Are there any exclusions in the poll? It snowed every month of the year in Scotland last year for example albeit above 1800feet in july/august

There was a well documented late snowfall at the start of June 1976.

It even caused a delay to an important cricket match at Durham.

Some routes over the Pennines needed snowploughing.

It was quite white on the hills here with some lying in the shade even at lower levels until noon.

October 15th 1992 saw a wet snow cover (

)

Have seen sleety flakes on windscreens in late September several times.

What would cause it to snow at 8c. Can it snow at temperatures higher than 8c?

snow at 8°C i would have thought is more of a feb-may event 300m asl or higher, with -5 or lower upper air temps, even then though temp would fall in squall or shower

highest temp ive had snow is around 5°C in february when its much warmer due to strong sun, but just as shower ended it was nearer 0°C

I would think at any elevation snow wouldnt be possible above 6C Nov-Jan, due to no convection to rise temps

I'm old enough to remember lying snow at low levels, albeit in the Highlands, on June 2nd 1975 and on higher ground [>1000 feet] on June 10th 1986.

Have seen snow fall in April at 7-8c with low dew-points and cold uppers.

On the mountains I have seen snow fall in early July but would count that as a late fall rather than early one as the few weeks most likely not to see snow fall on the high mountains in Scotland are from mid July to mid August.

Not seen snow lying on low ground before late October, last time being in 2008.

Earliest for falling snow was 3rd October 1994.

Earliest for lying snow 16th October 1993 when we had a couple of inches some of which was still lying in the evening.

Latest for lying snow was 6th May 1997 when there was a brief cover of snow in the morning.

Latest for falling snow I'm not sure - have seen falling snow/sleet several times in mid-May but no more than a few flakes. Probably no later than 16th May.

Can't quite remember but I think we may have seen some sleety wet snowflakes in mid Oct 1992, certainly the fells were covered in the stuff. More recently late Oct 2008 saw widespread low level snow in these parts.

Late snowfall - 17 May 1995 saw some sleety wet snowflakes. May 6th 97 snow cover at 9am after light overnight fall. I know 2 June 1975 delivered snow down to very low levels in the Lake District.

On average we tend to experience our first snowfall in mid Nov, with first snow cover late in the month. Mid April usually last date for snowfall and early April last date for snow cover.

A bit more detail:

Earliest Snowfall: I think November 2005 although November 2010 would come in close.

Earliest Lying Snow: November 2010 without a doubt. November the 26th.

Latest Snowfall: May 10th 2010.

Latest Lying Snow: Probably March 2006 which was the largest snowfall I've seen.

Warmest Temperature for Snow: I think somewhere around 5-7c.

Earliest snowfall: early September, on Ben Nevis. OK, October 2008 just about, but it was at best very wet snow in Shrewsbury- I'd be tempted to say it was sleet. Earliest that was without doubt snow Nov 18th 2004.

Latest falling; 17th May 1995, and it was actual snow not sleet for an hour or two mid-morning. It was snowing at 10am in mid-May.

Earliest lying: 19th Nov 1996 gets it, but it was only a dusting here, 20th Nov 1988 was the earliest "decent" lying snow I can remember.

Latest lying: 15th April 1998

Warmest; I think that would be around 17-18-19 April 1995, when there were snow showers during the warmest part of the day in a temp of about 7C.

surely when it is snowing the temperature has to be around 0C or lower regardless of what the temp is prior to or after snow has fallen..so stating a temp of 7,8 or 9c isnt really true.

Earliest snowfall from memory was October 31 a couple of years ago. I remember it well as accompanying the neighbours youngest kids my advice to keep them wrapped up was well recieved, given we live in the Pennines anyway it wasn't much surprise that it was 50/50 odds-on anyway. I think it was 2 years ago since then on November 5th it's been the closest to beating that date, when a brief arctic pool from the North lowered temps enough to allow some slight dusting on the hilltops before it vanished by the morning.
