Well we seem to be doing better than last year

Proof how cold the northern hemisphere is still in April.

It isn't usually until May when we start to see the arctic pack ice break up and snow cover in northern scandi/russia and central/north canada.

It will be interesting to see what the map looks like in a months time.

Perhaps my eyes are deceiving me - but it doesn't look very different to what it did in the last post shown...

By the looks of it the linked image automatically updates. The one posted in April shows Sat 7 July 2012.

Whereas if it was saved onto the PC first then uploaded it would show the relevant image for the date posted.

Yes quite, it never used to update automatically.

The Cryosphere today images compare this year to last, and at the moment we seem to be on par....

Hopping round NW remembered this thread from last year and thought I would take a look at the current extent of ice...are there are pixels in Sweden and Switzerland or are my eyes deceiving me?

Yes, of course, snow in Scandinavia and the Alps all year is not unusual.

Is that ice pack due to melt back more because that looks really good considering last years was started in august....

Comparison

August 2011

July 2012

cursnow_asiaeurope.gif

Snow coverage over Asia, sandi & west coast of Canada and america looks better too in my eyes.

And with the correlation to sea ice hitting land over previous years with a snow boom, surely it won't take long with things how they are to

Get Russia and Siberia going? Or am I being a fool here?

There's definitely more ice around.. but last year was poor for ice I believe.

Ahhh haha! Ice generally keeps on retreating until late August/September, so nothing new on the pack, and the snow is simply put average.

I don't know why we are comparing July 15 with August 12 though?

I'm a complete novice so bare with me :D

I was curious as there seems to be a more increased amount of snow upon August last year (no idea if this is due to melt back at all??)

Same with the ice really, I didn't know if this would be due to increase from now onwards or retreat more then increase.

Only comparing the two as I happened to notice the current one (July 2012) and remembered this thread opening in August last year as a base point. Wasn't sure if there was a significance to the ice pack being larger now IMO and closer to the shore line as apposed to month later in comparison to last year!

Here's a handy page for making some snow and ice comparisons

Here are the northern hemisphere and regional snow cover rankings, for which the last 3 months don't make for positive reading...

as isolated frost said, the ice keeps retreating for a while yet. watch the 31 day animation- http://www.natice.noaa.gov/ims/loop/asia-1mo-loop.html it all becomes clear....

To me the ice looks in pretty poor shape..i bet when you compare Aug 2012 to Aug 2011 the ice will be much less
