SUMMER could finally be around the corner with weather forecasters predicting the UK could enjoy warm weather for the rest of July.

With parts of Britain experiencing the hottest day of the year so far on Sunday, memories of one of the coldest springs on record could soon be banished. Forecasters have said that a build-up of high pressure will lead to fine weather across the UK resulting in below average rainfall and above average temperatures. A few outbreaks of rain are expected between now and Friday but then the warmer weather is expected to return and stay right through into August.

A Met Office spokesman said: "There is reasonable confidence that high pressure will build, giving fine and dry weather across most parts of the UK from Friday onwards, with a mixture of variable cloud and sunshine. "There will be lighter winds elsewhere with temperatures around or just above normal at first, but a good chance of increasingly warm temperatures during the course of the following week, especially inland, becoming locally very warm in sunny conditions. "These drier and warmer conditions should continue into the following weekend and there are signals that the dry and settled weather from the first half of the month should continue across most parts of the UK during at least the first half of this period. "This means rainfall should be below average, with above average temperatures and above average sunshine amounts."

This follows a particularly cold start to the year, with March being the coldest on record since 1962. March was colder than the preceding winter months of December, January and February, which had not happened for almost 40 years

Anyone aged 10 or under living in the north of the UK might not actually remember a hot summer in their lifetime!  Today's 10 year old was just 3 back in the hot summer of 2006.

Safety Warnings As Weather Set To Heat Up

Britons set to enjoy the hottest temperatures of the year this weekend are being urged to stay safe by the emergency services charged with saving those who get into trouble. Much of England is due to feel the benefits of an area of high pressure moving up from across the south west from Friday. Parts of Scotland and much of Wales will also enjoy the year's warmest day to date, as temperatures hit the mid-to-late 20s. Forecasters predicted highs of up to 29C (84F) in London and the south east of England on Sunday, with the weekend's Wimbledon finals likely to be in for a balmy few days. But emergency services fear it could be a busy weekend for them and are urging those enjoying the outdoors to take extra care to avoid getting into trouble.

Pip Hare, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution's (RNLI) Coastal Safety Manager, said: "With the school holidays about to start and the weather set to get better, it's likely people will want to make the most of it and head to the beach. "The RNLI's advice is to choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags, which is the area most closely monitored by the lifeguards." Those using other beaches should check the weather and tide times, and follow the advice shown on safety signs at the beach entrance, she said. They also advise protecting yourself from the sun, advising people to "slip, slap, slop – slip on a T-shirt, slap on a hat and slop on some suncream" and drink plenty of fluids. The RNLI have worked with the Met Office to produce a video about staying safe on the beach, and have a beach finder mobile app available.

Steve Wheaton, West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) Assistant Chief Ambulance Officer, said: "Historically, when the weather is good, there is greater demand on both the ambulance service and the NHS as a whole, particularly to alcohol-related incidents and conditions that can be exacerbated by heat changes such as respiratory and cardiac complaints." The WMAS issued similar advise to the RNLI  and joined fire services in warning about the dangers of barbecues. The WMAS said: "If a barbecue is on the cards for this weekend, please ensure that it is lit safely and in the correct manner. "Avoid burn injuries by using the correct utensils and don't let children play too closely to the hot barbecue. Lastly, please make sure that all food is cooked through properly to avoid any food poisoning incidents." Police, fire and other rescue services across the country have taken to Twitter to issue their own advice.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue says: "#summersafety by Black Watch Cambridge TOP TIP: Turn off gas before switching off BBQ controls so any residual gas in pipeline is used up." And Eleri Thomas, RNLI Press Officer Wales & West, saying: "Enjoying the sun on the coast this wknd? Remember inflatables are dangerous in offshore winds." North Wales Police, meanwhile, has warned that warm weather can be a gift to would-be thieves with car and house doors and windows likely to be left open. Forecasters say the fine weather is likely to be around well into next week.

London weather: Better later than never ... heatwave to hit the capital

London is set to bask in a heatwave after forecasters announced what people have longed to hear for months: “Sunshine and blue skies every day.â€

It may sound too good to be true, but weather experts are predicting this weekend will be the hottest of the year so far - and that the warm spell could stay for at least a fortnight. Temperatures were forecast to hit 22C (72F) today, rise to 26C tomorrow (79F) and climb even higher on Saturday and Sunday. And the Met Office said temperatures would stay in the “mid to high twenties†next week,

The forecast sets things up for the hottest July for seven years and is a far cry from last July, when many parts of the UK suffered twice the normal rainfall, flash flods and cool temperatures. Met Office forecaster Charles Powell said: “It’s certainly been a long time coming. “There’s going to be some pretty decent weather and there will be a good deal of sunshine and blue skies every day. “From tomorrow onwards there will be much more in the way of sunshine and much less in the way of cloud. “At the weekend, there will be a good deal of dry and bright weather and it will feel much more summery.â€

The month-long forecast is more uncertain but some forecasters say the heatwave could last until August. The last time London and the South East had such a prolonged sunny spell was in July 2006, the hottest month since records began in 1914, when the mercury hit 36.5C (97.7F) in Wisley, Surrey. The UK record is 38.5C (101.3F) in Faversham, Kent, on August 10, 2003. The forecast comes despite predictions of soggy British summers for the next decade.

WEEKEND MELTDOWN AS THE WEATHER HEATS UP

SCORCHING Britain will get a long-awaited summer heatwave this weekend as 30C temperatures make us hotter than India. Sizzling sun will trigger the biggest beach rush in years and sales of barbecue foods are expected to quadruple as the mercury rockets. And bookies last night slashed the odds of 2013 being the hottest summer on record to just 3-1 as the country basked in the sunshine. The July record of 36.5C could fall as weather experts predict the heatwave will last well into next week. Alex Donohue, of Ladbrokes, said: “As the mercury soars the odds of this summer being the hottest ever continue to tumble.â€

Sadly it looks like this hot spell may have claimed its first life

Teenager dies in Malvern Hills quarry lake swim

A teenage boy has died while swimming in a lake at a quarry in the Malvern Hills. The boy's body was pulled from water at Gullet Quarry in Worcestershire about three and a half hours after the alarm was raised when he failed to resurface. The boy has not been named and police said his death at the quarry near Upper Colwall was not being treated as suspicious but as a "tragic accident". West Mercia Police warned people of the dangers of swimming in open water.

'Think twice'

A diving team from South Wales Police and crews from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service were among those who searched for the boy after being called to the quarry at about 13:20 BST. His body was found at about 16:50. Det Insp Richard Rees from West Mercia Police said: "This appears to have been a tragic accident and our thoughts are with the boy's family and friends at this sad time. "While it is too early to give a cause of death, we would like to take this opportunity to remind people about the dangers of open water. "With the warm weather upon us and the school holidays approaching, we would advise people to think twice about going into local rivers, lakes and canals in order to cool off. "We are privileged to live and work in a beautiful part of the country with a huge area of water. However, this comes with its dangers and we would appeal for people to recognise the risks associated with water and act responsibly."

Stones play with fire in the heavenly heatwave: And barbecue summer is here at last

BRITAIN’S barbecue summer finally arrived yesterday... four years late. This weekend’s balmy weather comes after forecasters were left red-faced in 2009 when they predicted the UK was “odds-on for a barbecue summerâ€. Later they had to “revise†their predictions after one of the wettest July's on record.

SUN SUN SUN: TODAY IS HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR

THE heatwave will set Britain sizzling at 30C (86F) today. The Met Office said yesterday’s 28C highs would be followed by the hottest day of the year. Forecasters also promised temperatures of 28C or higher until at least next Thursday, with the possibility of 30C to continue into next weekend and beyond. Highs of 33C (91F) are forecast for next week with the Met Office suggesting 27C in the North and 25C in Scotland.

Sizzling sunshine is here to stay

SCORCHING Britain will heat up even more this week with near record temperatures threatening to trigger a nationwide health alert.  Parts of the UK could hit 100F (38C) with the chance of the highest ever UK thermometer reading of 101.3F being beaten. The Met Office is “poised†to issue a health alert as the extreme heat poses a risk to the elderly.

BOILING BRITS HEAD STRAIGHT TO THE NEAREST BEACH

BAKING Britain enjoyed the warmest day of the year yesterday as forecasters predicted a month-long heatwave. The Met Office confirmed the 29.7C recorded at Heathrow Airport at 4pm broke the record for the warmest day of 2013. Yesterday’s temperatures made Britain warmer than Egypt and Ibiza, where temperatures rose only to 28C.

July weather: More sunshine and hot weather predicted for this weekend

Temperatures set to hit 28C following hottest day of the year

Britons can look forward to a July spent basking in the sunshine, forecasters have announced. Sunday marked the hottest day of 2013 when the mercury in Bournemouth Hurn hit 29.7C - and this spate of hot weather looks set to continue during the weekend.

The balmy conditions are expected to cool slightly in areas across the UK during mid-week, but will pick back up during Saturday and Sunday. Soaring temperatures in the north of England, which peaked at approximately 24C last week, could rise as high as 28C. The average weather in July is usually around 20.9C according to the Met Office, making the current heat above average but not unusual.

Supermarket Waitrose are expecting to sell six times more bottles of sun cream if the good weather continues, whilst Asda have said they could sell triple the amount of burgers normally purchased at the weekend, the Daily Mail reported.
