Met Office warns of wintry weather in Scotland's hills

Posted ImageClimbers and walkers are being encouraged to heed weather forecasts

The Met Office has warned walkers and climbers to expect wintry conditions in Scotland's hills and mountains over the next few days.

It said bitterly cold and strong northerly winds and snow would "present some very challenging conditions".

The Met Office added that the conditions were forecast to improve over the weekend.

Bob Kinnaird, of the Scottish National Outdoor Training Centre, said the condition could be severe.

Met Office chief forecaster Martin Young said: "Although we are well into May we will see some very difficult conditions on the mountains, especially on Thursday.

"On the tops of the mountains in Scotland we could see winds gusting up to 80mph, giving blizzard conditions in the snow and making things very hazardous."

Mr Kinnaird added: "Although it's not that unusual to encounter winter conditions on the Scottish hills at this time of year, this is a very severe forecast for the high tops.

"While this still leaves plenty of options to enjoy the hills, careful consideration should be given to planning and route choice, particularly for those who have little experience of mountaineering in Scottish winter conditions."

UK retail sales hit by bad weather again

Sales of food fell notably in April, the ONS said

Retail sales in April were 1.3% lower than in March as bad weather continued to dent spending. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) also said retail sales volumes last month were 0.5% higher than a year earlier, much less than expected. The ONS said that sales of garden furniture and barbecue food were especially hard hit last month. Total food sales plunged 4.1% in April, their largest monthly fall in almost two years.

"Feedback from large food store retailers suggested that the cold weather continued to impact on sales," said the ONS. "In particular, the weather hindered sales within their spring and summer ranges." At the same time, consumers used the internet to do their shopping rather than venturing outside. "The overall proportion of non-seasonally adjusted online sales remained high at 10%, reflecting feedback from large retailers, which suggested that during the continued cold weather consumers purchased from their online sites rather than in-store," the ONS added.

Analysts had expected little or no monthly decline in retail sales. "Retailers are not out of the woods yet. While the UK economy managed to avoid a triple-dip recession, the retail sector is still struggling to make a sustained comeback," said Peter Saville at advisory and restructuring firm Zolfo Cooper. "Disappointing results at some of Britain's biggest chains underline the competitiveness of the market and the importance of understanding your customer base. "However, with indicators suggesting that consumer confidence is on the rise, there is certainly an opportunity for retailers to capitalise on this and drive growth within the UK economy.

Bank Holiday ends in a washout

Brian Gaze, from The Weather Outlook, said this week will see unsettled conditions with showers or longer spells of rain across most parts of the country. However, this could lead into a drier spell next weekend, though showers could continue in the South-east, he added.

Jo Farrow, from Netweather, also warned that slow moving rain clouds passing over South Wales and the West Country towards south-east England will bring with them heavy downpours, though there will be sunny spells elsewhere. Temperatures will be about 57F. Looking ahead, she said England and Wales will have more cloud, light winds and some heavy showers. Temperatures will continue to rise before the end of the week, reaching 68F on Thursday, when the country will see a mixture of sunshine and showers, she said.
