A bank holiday weekend of contrasting weather will see some families and friends lucky enough to dust off the barbecues while others huddle together to avoid frequent showers. The north-west of Scotland is unlikely to see the mercury rise above 10C, while the south-east and East Anglia bask in temperatures of up to 23C. However, a band of cloud moving from south to north will drag with it milder air on Sunday with blue skies emerging as that band starts to break up.

Roads will be busy for the early May holiday, particularly those to the coast as sun-seekers look to make up for the disappointingly wet Easter. A spokesman for the Highways Agency advised drivers to check its website to see which routes might be congested. James Berresford, chief executive of Visit England, the English tourist board, said: "An improvement in the weather over the bank holiday should hopefully inspire people to get out and about and make the most of the long weekend."

National Rail Enquiries said that many train operators were planning to run weekend services on bank holiday Monday, with engineering works planned on a number of lines. On Sunday and Monday, some London Midland services on parts of the line between London Euston and Crewe will be replaced by buses. Hay fever sufferers will not have such a great weekend, with high levels of pollen expected across England. The pollen count will increase as temperatures rise, with the worst conditions expected on Sunday and Monday, according to meteorologists. Alexander Burkill, a weather forecaster with the Met Office, explained: "It's the fact that it's going to be mostly dry, quite warm with generally lightish winds across much of England and Wales." He added that tree pollen would be more significant than grass pollen until the middle of May. People in the south-east will be particularly badly affected.

While south-west England and Wales will experience only moderate levels of tree pollen on Monday, regions with higher temperatures towards the south-east of England will deal a double blow to hay fever sufferers as warm weather leads to higher levels of both tree and grass pollen. According to Meteogroup, part of the Press Association, the level of grass pollen this weekend should not be underestimated. Tom Tobler, a meteorologist with the group, said: "As we get more sunshine on Monday and it warms up in southern England, it could start edging into moderate pollen counts."

At last, a sunny Bank Holiday

BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY SET TO BE HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR

Experts warn the cooler spell could then last the rest of May, and say June could be downright miserable. The Met Office said temperatures will tumble from mid May with a “significant chance†of it being the coldest since 1998.

Weather: It's Hot - But Not Year's Hottest Day

Temperatures this Bank Holiday Monday have risen to beat some sunny European destinations, including in France. Cloudy skies resulted in highs of 21C (69.8F) in London and 21.3C (70.3F) in Lincolnshire, but failed to top the record set on April 25 of 23C (72F). Tipped to be a scorcher, forecasters had predicted it could be the hottest day in Britain so far this year. But Brits basked in the knowledge that they were enjoying more sunshine than those in the French capital, Paris. And the sunny Bank Holiday weather is expected to continue on Tuesday in some parts. Many inland areas, such as London and Kent, could see temperatures rising to between 20C and 22C.

Northern, central and eastern parts of England as well as Scotland will bask in the sunshine tomorrow before temperatures plummet for the rest of the week. Wednesday will see a return to wet and windy weather, which will last through to Friday. Sky weather presenter Sarah Pennock said: "Tomorrow will bring a mild morning with patchy mist and low cloud for much of the UK. "The cloud will thicken across southern Ireland, southern Wales and southwest England bringing light rain by lunchtime. There it will feel cooler than the rest of the UK. Central and eastern England will have another warm day with lengthy spells of sunshine and the odd afternoon shower.

"Expect temperatures to peak around 21C in southeastern England. "Wednesday will feel cooler as heavy blustery showers ease northwards." This Bank Holiday Monday has been a big improvement on last year, which saw rain and a temperature high of just 16C at Exeter Airport. The warmest Bank Holiday Monday in recent years was in 2008 when London reached 23C and even the coldest part of Scotland got up to 14C, with much of the country seeing sunshine.

Easter Timing And Cold Hit Retailers In April

Industry figures suggest the return of warmer weather is helping stores escape the largely bleak winter for the high street.

The cold weather and the timing of Easter hit retail sales across the board last month - falling at their fastest rate for a year. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said retail sales values were down 2.2% on a like-for-like basis from April 2012. On a total basis, sales were down 0.6%, against a 1.0% decline in April 2012. However the BRC said the figures masked a respectable month as the late spring sunshine boosted sales of summer wear including sandals, shorts and skin care products.

Weather: Fortnight's Rainfall In Single Day

The week ahead could be a washout for many, with half a month's rain expected to fall in a single day in some parts of the country. Forecasters say Tuesday will be the wettest day of the week in southern areas, with up to 25mm (one inch) of rain possible in Devon, Cornwall and Wales. Sky meteorologist Chris England said: "That's quite a lot of rain and could lead to some local flooding, but it's coming after a fairly dry spell, so any impacts are likely to be very limited." Heavy downpours are possible in the East and the South East, although Scotland will be drier after heavy showers on Monday. Temperatures will struggle to reach double figures anywhere on Tuesday, although conditions will improve towards the end of the week, when many places will have a mixture of sunshine and showers. The first three months of the year have been exceptionally wet for many parts of the South West.

Cold winter boosts profits at Centrica

Gas consumption is up 20% on last year due to the prolonged cold weather, according to British Gas owner Centrica, which reported boosted profits from households.

However, the energy giant, which raised prices by 6% in December, just before the harsh weather set in, said that instead of pocketing the extra earnings it would use them to prevent any further price increases "for as long as possible".

Spring on hold as snow forecast for parts of Wales and Scotland

Rare May snowfall expected on higher ground as cold temperatures and wet weather sweep Britain

Snow is expected to fall on Tuesday across high regions in Wales and Scotland, according to weather forecasters. The cold temperatures and heavy rainfall mean especially wet areas may well see some snowflakes, though it is not expected to settle.

Emma Corrigan, a forecaster at the Met Office said: "At the moment we've got quite cool air across the UK and through Tuesday as the weather system pushes northwards potentially where you get really quite heavy rain you may see summer flakes of snow. "It's only where you get the really heavy rain so the main risk will be Wales, mainly over the hills but not just the hills depending on how heavy the rain will be and then potentially up towards the Peak District and Pennines, that sort of area."

Paul Mott, a forecaster with Meteogroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said snow would only be in higher regions. Snowfall in May is rare but not unheard of, according to Corrigan. She said: "It is fairly rare to get it in May but it's happened before. In 1979 in early May there were four consecutive days of snowfall."

Mott said Tuesday would also be be a noticeably cold and wet day for much of Britain. He said: "It's going to feel very cold for the time of year I think, temperatures in parts of south west England and south Wales probably not much higher than about 6C or 7C tomorrow, and the average for this time of year would be nearer 15C so temperatures well below the seasonal average."
