They should be banned from weather forecasting as they get it wrong all year round.

Super blizzard set to SMASH Britain next week as mercury drops lower than Arctic Circle

A RELENTLESS blizzard will batter Britain next week making roads impassable and causing havoc with Britain's transport network. Bitter winds from the North Pole will rip through the UK from next Friday dragging temperatures to an incredible -15C – lower than in the Arctic Circle. Savage winds and polar temperatures are expected to plummet parts of Britain further into the big freeze. Scotland and the north will bear the brunt of the storm but people are being warned that the temperatures will be at arctic levels throughout the UK.

Found there pics from Italy, its not just Greece and Turkey thats getting the big freeze...

Headlines from over there read "Snow and Ice emergency, blizzards in central and Southern Italy including Sicily down to sea level".

Maybe our turn later next week.

The last chart shows snow depths expected in next 7 days...BLUE is rain.

The whole Express headline fiasco seems to be going a little too far...

Met Office to be asked if they want to carry guns

Oh, wait, it's "Met officers", not "Met Office", phew.

:D

BBC monthly outlook

Monday 9 January—Sunday 15 January

A week of change...

A very grey but settled weekend will give way to more unsettled weather through the start of the week as Atlantic fronts bring rain and fresher winds to the UK. The weather will turn increasingly cold through the mid week as the winds turn north-westerly, with showers becoming quite wintry over hills. By the latter half of the week a northerly Arctic airflow will establish itself, and widespread scattered snow showers will be accompanied by local gales. Outside of these snow showers, there will be some good spells of wintry sunshine as we head towards a slightly milder theme for the weekend.

Monday 16 January—Sunday 22 January

A north / south Divide

A return to more westerly, Atlantic driven weather looks to take hold of the UK, with occasional wintry precipitation in the far north west and over hills and mountains. Breezy across all areas at first, a more settled feel should develop in the South, with the worst of the wind and rain confined to the North West. This settled weather in the South will leave the door open to some cooler nights with a risk of overnight frosts and fog patches.

Monday 23 January—Sunday 12 February

Settled weather returning?

By the end of January it is most likely that high pressure will return, bringing an increased likelihood of drier but colder than average weather to the UK.

Next week

An arctic blast to stay or not to stay?

Certain numerical models are suggesting that a cold easterly airflow could develop over the weekend bringing temperatures well below average, as we have seen in Europe already this week. But on the other hand...... other data suggests a return to a milder Atlantic direction. Check BBC Weather for updates throughout the week.

I've had' the sun' spammed on my FB.  The comment about thundersnow is worth its weight in well, snow'. 'It is possible, all that really needs is for thunder to happen at the same time as the snow.' was said when the met O was quizzed.

really.

MetOffice

UK 5 day forecast.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Rain and milder conditions will slowly move eastwards across the UK during the weekend, preceded by sleet and snow. Cloudy, damp and mild on Monday.

Totally at odds with ECM 12z and its ensemble forecast of 10 day cold spell.

The BBC Weather this morning showed it mild Sunday/Monday too and they didn't go any further but did say 'warmer, but it wont stay that way'.

Not sure what model their using to come to that conclusion, but they haven't completely dismissed the cold.

This local paper piece is quite good :-

http://www.shropshirestar.com/news/2017/01/10/shropshire-weather-snow-is-on-the-way-but-things-could-be-worse/

I remember that winter well as we literally had just had central heating installed as the snow started! I often searched for pictures and accounts of that winter but nothing seems to come up, why is such a sever winter "forgotten" when the likes of 1963 & 1947 are cemented in history?

It has been updated and still using the word "mild"

Cloudy, damp and rather mild for most on Monday.

Clearl ywarmer air will get in for a short while but away from the far West it doesn't look "mild" on the output I've seen.

BBC monthly outlook

Summary
A quieter end to the month

Last week we saw a real taste of winter with strong, biting northerly winds, spells of rain, sleet and snow, and icy stretches. Next week the weather will be much quieter and calmer by comparison but it will still be cold for some.

Monday 16 January—Sunday 22 January
High pressure in charge

There will be a lot of dry weather around as an anticyclonic pattern takes hold this week. The devil will be in the detail though, because high pressure doesn't always bring lots of sunshine. There will be some, especially across the east and south-east of the UK, but for many it will be a cloudy week with light winds. It's across the south-east of England that we'll hold onto some colder air too, giving a risk of frost and fog. The exception to the rule will be across the north-west of the UK, where winds will be stronger, there will be some rain at times and it will be milder.

Monday 23 January—Sunday 29 January
How long will it last?

Established areas of high pressure often need quite a shove to move them along and it looks as though the quiet spell of weather should last into the start of next week. However, as the days progress, a spell of rain and stronger winds may move in from the north-west and slowly continue south-eastwards across the UK. This would bring temperatures closer to normal - high single figures. However, there is some uncertainty about the timing and transition to something more unsettled.

Monday 30 January—Sunday 12 February
It's February already?

As we head towards the start of a new month the most likely scenario is for a more mobile pattern of weather to affect the UK. This would mean areas of low pressure and weather fronts making their way in from the west, with some drier days thrown in for good measure. Temperatures should stay near normal but during drier spells it may well turn colder with some frosty and foggy nights.

Next week

Will we see another cold, wintry spell of weather again?
