Article in The Times saying cold weather in January with easterly winds.. not sure where they got this from, but they were making comparisons with winter 09/10. Every day seems to bring a new forecast for the winter ahead.. I gave up reading such predictions years ago..

barely a mention that Abigail's main gales are for NW UK. The perception from reading this is that all of the UK is about to be hit by 80mph winds (not gusts)

so when London doesn't feel its effects by Friday, there will be moaning galore from any Indie readers

Unfortunately that will be common and a reason why storm naming could be unnecesary.  I remember when a neighbour of mother-in-law said way back....oh snow is forecast.  They lived in Elephant and Castle.  I thought, I don't think so.  BBC were forecasting some snow for Northern Scotland ONLY but she and others just heard snow and 'assumed' it would be countrywide.

And so as you say....many will think Abigail is to batter ALL the UK...ho hum...

Just watched the bbc weather forecast for the next few days, what a cringe fest.

The constant use of emotive language and the style in which it is delivered is way over the top.

Or maybe I'm becoming an old grump, thank God we have netweather!

The weather has been very quiet recently, weeks of high pressure and fog with more fog, there has to be a release somewhere .

(and hoorah for Netweather)

You should hear Laura Tobin on good morning Britain

The cringe award goes to her. I've never heard a TV forecaster make a rain shower sound like a hurricane.

She would need restraining if she was to take a job in the States.

Which of course it won't be, because it'll retain it's Kate name. Can't even get that right!

I hope so because something like this will make it a total farce.

By the sounds of it every bit of slightly unusual weather will get a name tagged along. We're talking hundreds by next year.

Especially if we gave names to the predicted events.  Perhaps the Daily Express could take this up. Each period of four months unrelenting snow they predict could be allocated a name, and then with every new prediction that gets christened, they could give us a rundown on how the previous names fared?

They will be naming drizzle fronts next. Drizzly 'Dave' To Dampen Britain

Meanwhile the second half of winter could be promising.

Temperatures To Plummet Ahead Of Thanksgiving

A strong cold front will see temperatures plummet from New York down to parts of the Gulf Coast ahead of Thanksgiving. Parts of the Midwest experienced heavy snow fall over the weekend, with six states from North Dakota to Illinois seeing temperatures drop to 20F (-6C).

Residents in northern Illinois, including Chicago, saw more than 11 inches of snow - the highest November total in 120 years in the city. Snow showers are expected to continue into Tuesday in the Great Lakes area, as temperatures remain between 10 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit below the average.
