Britons basked in the glorious sunshine as temperatures reached 16C in the South

GLORIOUS weather yesterday sent crowds flocking to beaches, rivers and parks around the country. As the mercury hit a high of 60F (16C) in the South, Brighton beach was busy with families making the most of the school holidays. And punters were out in force on the River Cam in Cambridge, basking in the sunshine. Forecasters predict the warm weather is set to stay for the rest of the week – and could get even hotter.

There will be more sunshine across Britain today with highs of 59F in the South-west, peaking at 66F in the South on Thursday. Jonathan Powell, of Vantage Weather Services, said: “It is going to be a good week for sun lovers. “Even when the sun goes in it will still be warm.â€

‘El Nino effect’ is about to give Britain a sizzling summer

BRITAIN could be in line for one of its hottest summers ever because of the “El Nino effectâ€. United Nations scientists warned yesterday of a “fairly large†chance of droughts and heavy rain across the globe this year because of the climate phenomenon generated by warming waters in the Pacific Ocean. If forecasts are proved correct, average summer temperatures in Britain and the rest of the world will rise, Australia could suffer droughts while South America and the United States will suffer floods. But winters in the UK and Europe will also be much colder and drier. The El Nino phenomenon occurs every two to seven years, when the winds that cool the Pacific weaken allowing the sea to warm up. The warmer currents can then trigger the climate changes.

Michel Jarraud, of the UN-sponsored World Meteorological Organisation, said: “While there’s no guarantee this situation will lead to an El Nino event, the longer trade winds remain weakened, and sub-surface temperatures stay significantly warmer than average, the higher the likelihood.†Meanwhile, the current sunshine enjoyed in Britain is expected to fizzle out by Easter Sunday. The recent clear skies will continue into the start of the holiday weekend with temperatures hitting 68F (20C). But the conditions are expected to disappear behind rain clouds by Sunday, ruining barbecue plans. Jonathan Powell, of Vantage Weather Services, said: “Friday and Saturday are in for sunshine but we will have a tremendous wrestling match between high and low pressure systems on Sunday and Monday.†Those staying in Britain for Easter also face the traditional travel hell. Engineering works will disrupt key rail routes in London while 18.6 million could be on the roads.

Met office response to the Daily Mirror

There are reports this morning in the Daily Mirror of a heatwave heading to the UK by the middle of the month and sticking around for a fortnight.

So is it true?

Well possibly. However the forecast, provided to the Mirror by Exacta Weather, is far more definite than the Met Office would be willing to predict so far in advance. There looks to be a general trend in 10-15 days of high pressure taking over. That should lead to more settled, drier and warmer conditions. However, confidence levels are too low to say for certain and the Met Office (the UK's main forecaster) only predict up to 5 days with confidence.  Although in the UK there is no official definition of a heatwave the World Meteorological Organisation definition is "when the daily maximum temperature of more than five consecutive days exceeds the average maximum temperature by 5°C". London's average daytime maximum temperatures in the middle of May are 17C. Therefore to constitute a heatwave we would need to see 5 consecutive days with temperatures peaking above 22C.

However, the Met Office said it was "far too early to tell" if London would experience a heatwave. "You may have seen some reports this morning that Britain is likely to see much warmer than average weather lasting over two weeks into the beginning of June," a spokesperson said. "However, although there are early signals that that there is a very small probability that mainland Europe could see warmer than average temperatures by the end of May, it is far too early to tell if this will extend as far Northwest as the UK."

A distinct lack of any signs of a heatwave in the short term. Dispite newspaper articles claiming a big heatwave on the way.

To me it looks about average or just below.

Something I've noticed in recent weeks has been the liberal use of the word 'warm' by the BBC to describe conditions. Temps of barely 15 degrees a few weeks back were described as warm and high teens very warm. Yet when we get to mid summer, similar temps would be described as cool and very warm reserved for high 20's. Thomas S has just described weekend temps as 'hot'... mmm very wide of the mark, again the word is not normally used unless temps of 30 degrees +.

I'm being very pedantic, but it does annoy me when they use such words liberally, with a strong bias to temps in London. Those in Scotland, N Ireland such language bears no relevance.

It is all relative but I always think the following words are correct to describe conditions roughly May- Sept:

Warm - 21-25 degrees.

Very warm - 26-29 degrees.

Hot - 30-33 degrees

Very hot 34 degrees+

Oh dear just when I thought the express couldn't get any worse......

3 MONTHS OF SUNSHINE: Heatwave could last until AUTUMN claim forecasters

BRITAIN is about to enter one of the longest heatwaves in HISTORY with temperatures set to rocket from TOMORROW and stay sky high until SEPTEMBER. The mercury is expected to hit a scorching 81F (27C) by Tuesday with virtually the entire country bathed in glorious wall-to-wall sunshine. The heat will be so extreme it will trigger spectacular thunderstorms towards the end of the week that will cause flash slooding across Britain. Forecasters warned  it was just the start, with summer weather records dating back to 1910  at risk of being obliterated by the relentless heat to come. A rare El Nino weather pattern, when warm deep waters on the Pacific equator rise to the surface, is thought to be responsible for the extraordinary weather being predicted.

Umm, but is there anything in the text - even quote from the usual suspects - that supports that headline?

Minor points - El Niño - rare?

Have they even got the timing of the breakdown of a not-unusual HP completely wrong? Does a fairly two days warm followed by rain pattern necessarily have any relation to El Niño?

I could go on, but my meal is nearly ready.

Cxx

And, what on Earth is slooding?

Where did they get that beaut from? "The heat will be so extreme"???? Lower down that article he calls 23c "hot and humid" Take a trip to Death Valley sometime Mr Rao...you'll get a better idea what extreme heat really is!

Absolute joke of an article. Trouble is...as long as there are people gullible enough to believe everything that this whopper comes out with, these ridiculous articles will continue to be printed.

In any case, the forecast is already wrong 8 days in.

Daily star having another go

UK set to hit a SIZZLING 36C as weathermen predict a SCORCHING summer!

Hot south-easterly breezes are due to be driven to the UK this summer by high pressure over Scandinavia.

The “major factor†in this summer’s weather is said to be warm air arriving from northern central Europe, including Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic.

High-altitude Atlantic jet stream winds, which can bring low pressure, are forecast to blow north of the UK, meaning lower rainfall.

But the south-west will suffer glancing blows from cooler, wetter weather systems forecast to affect parts of France and Spain this summer.

All headlines to make more money methinks Gavin.

and LPs to glance the SW and head into France and Spain doesn't suggest a Jetstream shifted well north of the UK does it?.
