Batten down the hatches! Britain is as cold as Moscow

FREEZING Arctic weather is set to batter Britain next week, making the UK as cold as Moscow. Forecasters warned the nation to prepare for sub-zero temperatures, icy winds and huge snow storms. And the mercury is forecast to plunge below zero, meaning Britain will shiver in the same -1C weather gripping the icy Russian capital. MeteoGroup forecaster Laura Caldwell explained: “Even though it’s relatively mild at the minute, it’s starting to turn with winds coming from a more northerly direction through the week. “By next weekend, we will see the really cold air drawn down from the Arctic, with chances of snow showers. “It will mainly be in northern, exposed parts, such as north Scotland, but also down the eastern and western coasts of Britain exposed to the northern wind.†Forecasters also predicted that parts of the UK will see icy wintry showers this weekend, pelting Christmas shoppers with freezing rain. Daytime temperatures in the north and Scotland won’t rise above a bone-chilling 4C today or tomorrow.

Paul Michaelwaite, from forecaster Netweather explained: “We’ll see wintry showers along the east coast of Scotland, and other parts of Britain will also see showers. “The maximum daytime temperatures we’ll see this weekend are about 6 to 8C in England, although it will be a few degrees colder in the north and in Scotland. “However, much of the country will see overnight temperatures falling to as low as zero.†But there was some good news from the Met Office, which predicted there would be bright sunshine for much of the nation over the weekend.

Weather wars: Met Office denies predicting three months of exceptionally cold weather amid reports of Britain's 'coldest winter ever'

I think that is a totally sensible and clear quote from the MetO in the Independent and I wonder if their journo's are looking in on this thread!! Posted Image

So when does the 2 months/3 months/6 months (delete as appropriate) of the worst Winter ever actually begin, because I'd like to start making contingency plans.....

Get ready for arctic plunge: Up to eight inches of snow to sweep Britain

AN “Arctic plunge†is set to trigger freezing temperatures this week and could bring snow across much of Britain by Friday. Severe gales are expected to sweep in from the North and cause blizzards on high ground. This could be only the start of a particularly bad winter with below-average temperatures and heavy snow for three months, warn forecasters. They say the blast of cold air could see the mercury dip to -13C (9F) overnight in the North, bringing eight inches of snow with wintry showers as early as tomorrow and heavy snow forecast for Wednesday. It will feel bitterly cold in the South with night temperatures of -7C. Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: “The North and West will bear the brunt although nowhere will escape the risk of wintry showers,†he said. “There is a huge swathe of Arctic air set to flood into the North initially but moving down the country throughout the week. Severe gales are set to trigger blizzards in the North. “We are at risk of snow, ice and freezing fog hitting parts of the South with eight inches possible over high ground in the North.â€

He said Britain could be in line for a particularly severe winter with the worst of the weather expected at the end of December. “All the signals are that this winter could be a real shocker,†he added. “Especially the end of December and into the New Year, we could see parallels with some of the worst winters in history.†Netweather forecaster Nick Finnis said a blast of very cold air later this week could bring a risk of sub-zero temperatures at night, low temperatures by day, snow and strong to gale force winds. He said: “Major weather models are indicating a cold front surging south during Thursday, followed by a strong and bitterly cold northerly wind sweeping south across the UK. Friday looks like being a bitterly cold day, with a risk of snow showers.†Government forecasters are predicting below-average temperatures until April.

Is this 8" covering the whole of Britain in it's 'sweep'? If so, is it going to last 3 or 6 months as I might need to get some Heinz Tomato soup in.....

Ahh, a sensible quote then!!! I'll cancel the van delivery of soup.

Snow Threat As Cold Blast Hits Britain

Parts of the UK could be affected by snow by the end of the week as an Arctic blast causes temperatures to plummet. By Friday, average temperatures in England and Wales are expected to drop to just above freezing, with strong winds forecast for some coastal areas. Patchy rain could then turn into snow showers as the colder air hits the UK. Sky News weather presenter Nazaneen Ghaffar said: "Towards the end of this week the winds will swing round to a very cold northerly air flow bringing with it lower temperatures, below freezing across most places during nights with frosts, wintry showers and strong to gale force winds. "From Thursday a band of rain will spread southwards across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. "As that cold front clears to the south, there will be brighter conditions behind it from Friday.

"High pressure will also keep it dry for many, albeit bitterly cold in the northerly winds, but there will be some showers in the north and along exposed coasts which will turn increasingly wintry." Snow is also forecast to fall on higher ground, especially in Scotland. Long term forecasts suggest temperatures across the UK could remain below average for much of December. November saw some snow showers in high areas of Scotland and North Wales.

They're using that word again....

Snowmageddon, big freeze, Arctic gusts . . . all this and more has been predicted to leave Britain looking like a scene from a disaster movie it the coming days and weeks. But will the country really be paralysed by severe weather? It is winter, after all.

Today there are forecasts of eight inches of snow in parts of Britain this week as Arctic gusts feed the wind chill factor make it feel like -9C. The North-East of England and Scotland are said to be most at risk and could also be hit by 60 mph winds, according to some reports. And what about Bath? We may get a few brighter spells today as temperatures hover around the 7C mark and tomorrow we are set for a real shock - the mercury will drop to 4C! So far the forecast for Wednesday is the chance of patchy rain with a fine start to Thursday being replaced with rain and the possibility of isolated wintry showers on Friday. Temperatures will vary between 6C to 8C and overnight dropping to near freezing.

What is not in doubt was that the Met Office was forced to deny that they had warned the next three months would be exceptionally cold. It may be premature to pack away the thermals however, as the forecasters said it is simply not possible to forecast so far ahead. Responding to media reports that there could be months of disruptive snow ahead, the Met Office wrote a blog post to explain that it is more likely that there will be below-average temperatures than above-average temperatures – but noted that the “uncertainty is quite largeâ€. As things stand, December is set to be “fairly normalâ€, however.

The furthest afield they can forecast is 30 days – but stressed that if there is any sign of significantly cold weather, they will update the information given to the public accordingly. Their latest long range Met Office forecast predicts a mixture of sunny spells and snow showers on Friday and through the weekend - especially in northern Scotland some exposed western and eastern coasts. Gale force winds in the north and east could cause blizzards on hills while many southern and central inland areas will be largely sunny but with night frosts. Cloudier and milder conditions are expected to return early next week although southeastern areas may remain cold.

The forecast for December 6 to December 15 predicts a northwest/southeast divide with unsettled and milder weather in the northwest and the best of the drier weather in the south and east. And are we in for a white Christmas? Not yet according to the Met Office. The weathermen say it is likely to be generally unsettled towards the north and northwest of the UK with drier and brighter conditions further south and to th east. Temperatures look set to be around normal.

It's true. Although it's also true that we had up to eight inches of snow today as well.  And, indeed, get up to eight inches every day of the year (except when we get more than eight inches) .......

What utter male bovine excrement.

There may be 8" on a tall hill or mountain in the far north but not even the sheep drift that high to find it or be noticed I expect.  Yes it will be 'colder' than of late mind.

This is why I and many others hold no respect for tabloid reporting anymore, they just want a headline scandal.

SNOW WARNING: Arctic storm set to blast Britain with 90mph gales and crippling blizzards

ARCTIC gales of 90mph are gearing up to batter many parts of Britain with eight inches of snow expected in remote areas. A huge swathe of the country is braced for the gusts, bringing crippling blizzards over high ground in the North. The Met Office last night gave a severe weather warning for much of the country on Thursday. It issued an alert for heavy snow in the North and said potentially destructive waves will lash coastal regions. Forecaster Dan Williams predicted heavy snow on high ground and wintry showers along coasts on Friday. The country could see isolated snow showers before the weekend as temperatures plunge from tomorrow, he warned. He said: “A low pressure system is set to move across the UK with a large part of the country in for strong winds from Wednesday. “Nowhere should be surprised to see some snow or hail by Friday with up to 20cm (8ins) expected over high ground. Cold air is being pulled down from the Arctic direction from Thursday.†The Met Office said: “Warm air crossing the Atlantic will encounter very cold Arctic air which will cause a low pressure system to develop later on Wednesday. “As this system moves eastwards into Scandinavia this is likely to bring very strong westerly winds to northern and central parts of the UK.

Netweather warns of “Arctic gales and snow†at the end of the week with the risk of blizzards. Forecaster Nick Finnis said: “Wednesday sees the cold front across the North continue south across England and Wales. Thursday will turn unsettled from the North, as a band of rain and strong winds sweeps south, reaching southern England in the evening. “The northerly wind will strengthen to gale or severe gale force towards the evening across northern and eastern areas, bringing a risk of blizzard conditions in any snow showers and drifting of snow. Friday will be a rather cold but bright or sunny day, with a distinct wind chill.â€

Some of the comments below the Express story are hilarious.

Last year:

The facts and figures behind Express weather claims

For example, Bryan's research reveals that since 1 September last year, the weather was the main news story of the day 52 times on the front of The Express. And on no fewer than 12 of those instances the story involved a specific mention of "CHAOS". So that means there has been an average of one major weather-related news story per week and one warning of weather-related "CHAOS" per month.

It's almost as if they have a quota to keep.  Helpfully Bryan has included Met Office reports to let us know how accurate (spoiler: not very) The Express's stories have been. You should read Bryan's own, very detailed blog post. But some notable highlights of the month-by-month run-down are worth flagging.

'Up to 8 inches of snow expected in remote areas' - so that's a photo taken up the top of Aviemore to prove it then.

'Huge swathes of the country braced for 80mph gusts' - again Aviemore probably 30/40mph gust in the south.

'Much of the country is braced for the worst winter spell so far' - hang on we're only 3 days in!

Just some quotes from the above Express article - it's hilarious reading

UK set to be covered in snow as the big chill takes over

BALTIC Britain is set to suffer freezing -4C weather and up to eight inches of snow. A cold-snap will grip the nation from Thursday, weather forecasters warned yesterday. Britain will be as cold as Swedish capital Stockholm, with widespread chaos expected on the roads, railways and at airports.  Meteogroup warned that Scotland, Wales, northern and eastern England will suffer icy winds and snowstorms. Meteorologist Rachel Vince said: “The winds will turn more northerly on Thursday afternoon through Friday, bringing cold air down from the Arctic, and it will be very unsettled with snow showers. It is largely northern and western Scotland that will get the snow showers.â€

Northern areas could see eight inches (20cm), with up to 4cm elsewhere, with icy showers reaching south to Norfolk. But forecasters reckon the sub-zero cold snap will only last for the weekend. Rachel added: “It will be milder for the start of next week.â€

So widespread chaos expected on the roads, railways and at airports yet the snow will be largely in northern and western Scotland, hardly widespread chaos is it
