UK weather: Britain hit by SNOW in 10 days as forecasters warn COLDEST winter for 70 years

Quote

Temperatures will sink below freezing with weather models revealing the first snow will blanket parts of Scotland around mid-month. Freezing air from the North Pole will descend across the UK swept in by low-pressure stretching across the north Atlantic from Greenland to the northwest coast of Ireland. Long-range weather forecasts have started to agree on the autumn outlook with Northern Europe facing an unusually harsh winter.

Cold weather will be driven by a pattern of atmospheric blocking which tends to stop milder westerly winds reaching the UK while opening the gates to colder easterlies. Such a block was the driver for last year’s savage Beast from the East which brought a historic whiteout across Britain during the final weeks of winter. Thermometers will start to fall around the middle of this month heralding the run up to a brutally cold end to the year. Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden said: “October is now looking like it will turn out to be colder than average with more of a chance of something wintery setting in through the second half of the month.

"There is a strong chance of widespread frosts and the chance of snowfall which will set the scene for November. “This will pave the way for what is shaping up to be a colder than average winter with some extreme cold weather events. “While these could start to make an impact within the next few weeks they will be particularly troublesome from December onwards. “Snow events have been few and far between in recent years, but this winter is looking favourable to bring snow event after snow event as weather systems from the Atlantic clash with cold stagnated air over the UK.”

BBC monthly outlook

Summary

Very wet and quite windy. Perhaps less so later

_________________________________

Saturday 5 October – Sunday 13 October

Rain at first then showery and thundery midweek

Recent very wet and unsettled weather across the country looks set to continue for the first full week of October for most. Saturday will start out mostly dry with just a few showers in the east, but a front pushing in from the west will bring rain to western areas by midday. This will spread more widely across western Britain into the afternoon. Overnight, rain will continue eastwards into central and eastern Britain, some of which will be heavy.

Sunday will see further wet weather across eastern Britain, whilst further west, it will be drier and brighter. Yet more rain will spread east during Monday whilst Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will see low pressure the dominant feature, bringing sunshine and showers across the country. As well as the showers it will also be rather windy, particularly towards the north-west of the UK. There are growing signs of a more active weather system moving into the UK towards the end of the week and into the weekend. There is still some uncertainty on the exact timing of this feature, but this is expected to bring more widespread heavy rain and a brief strong wind event.

Monday 14 October – Sunday 20 October

Wet or very wet in places. Windy at times

Low pressure is likely to remain near to the UK into mid-October, which will keep things wet and windy at times for most of the country. However, the main difference from earlier in October will be the development of a stronger North Atlantic jet stream. The jet stream is a fast-moving ribbon of air in the upper atmosphere that drives weather systems, and a stronger jet stream will mean more frequent, faster-moving rain-bearing fronts pushing across the UK.

Some of these frontal systems will bring some strong winds as well, and gales are expected at times, especially across northern and western coasts. Scotland will likely stay rather windy throughout the week. As rain will tend to push in from the west, westernmost counties will generally see the highest rainfall totals, which could result in some local flooding.

Monday 21 October – Sunday 3 November

Gradual pattern shift with more settled weather.

While October looks like it will be a fairly wet and breezy month, there are some signs that towards late October, we will see a shift in the weather pattern. High pressure near Spain will drift a little further north into central Europe. This will mean Atlantic weather systems will get pushed a bit further northwest, allowing the UK to see some drier spells and milder air. This should be a gradual change, with fronts becoming more infrequent with some longer lived high pressure ridges in between them. Milder air will feed into the South and Southeast more frequently, so temperatures will likely begin to climb slightly above average here.

Weakened Atlantic fronts will still drift east, so while not completely dry, it will be much less wet than earlier in the month. However, all this comes with a hefty caveat of low confidence. October is known as a transition month between summer and winter, and the weather tends to become much more volatile. Our long range computer models can struggle with capturing this changeability. Therefore, there is a 40% chance that low pressure stays dominant into November, making the whole of October very wet and quite windy.

Further ahead

Mid-October is looking very wet and windy, and we will try and pin down some specifics for any significant wind events.

Weather forecast UK: 100-day storm to batter Britain until 2020 in washout

Quote

Britain is braced for a wash-out winter with three months of storms and torrential downpours – starting today. Weather forecast experts say unprecedented rainfall could be dumped on the country over the next 100 days. The warning comes as a 1,000-mile-wide, low-pressure vortex is set to batter the UK until Wednesday bringing rain and gusts of up to 60mph in the north west. It threatens to become autumn’s first named storm, with large areas of the nation facing six inches of rain and 22ft waves predicted.

And forecasters predict severe wind and rain could batter us into January – heralding a wet and windy end to the year. Gales of more than 100mph are expected, which could cause power cuts and travel chaos. It is more bad news after the Daily Star Sunday revealed last week that an Arctic freeze is on the way.

UK weather: Flood warnings as heavy rain hits parts of England and Scotland

Quote

Warnings are in place for potential flooding across England and Scotland as heavy rain affects many parts of the UK. Flash floods have already hit roads across the country after parts of western Scotland, London and East Anglia experienced rainfall rates of up to 32mm an hour overnight. Some areas in Yorkshire, Surrey and Essex saw even higher rates, according to Met Office radar.

Environment Agency flood warnings and alerts in England are in place across London, Surrey, the Midlands and the North. The A282 northbound Dartford Crossing (anti-clockwise), the A77 at Cairnyan, the A75 at Barlae and the A82 between Renton and Stoneymollan are among the roads closed. Kilburn Park and Regent's Park Tube stations in London were also closed, and several sporting events in Surrey and Scotland also reported being called off.

In the absence of a thread for TV forecasts, might I ask what others thoght of the Countryfile forecast that has just finished?  It seemed to me a case of vague wittering with no real detail.  She could have just done this:

A major pattern flip brings much warmer weather across continental Europe this weekend and next week

Quote

After a quite cold period across the eastern half of Europe this week, a major pattern flip is shaping up this weekend. While dynamic pattern evolves over the N Atlantic, a strong high-pressure system from the Azores first expands into south-central Europe by Friday and then spreads into eastern Europe over the weekend and into the next week. Much warmer weather with local temperatures in excess of 25 °C is expected, locally even close to 30°C!

Unsettled weather with successive lows for the British Isles and Ireland in the next week

Quote

A period of very unsettled weather is ahead for the British Isles and Ireland in the coming 5-7 days. A broad area of low pressure establishes over the Atlantic, ejecting successive lows into the region. Persistent rainfall will pose a threat for flooding.

BBC monthly outlook

Summary

Often wet and windy but mild.

_________________________________

Wednesday 9 October – Sunday 13 October

Windy and showery with prolonged rain at times.

The remainder of this week will be often windy with showers and temperatures near or a little above normal. Most places will have rather mild nights too, with any frost limited to upland glens of northeast Scotland.

On Wednesday, much of the UK will have some bright or sunny intervals. However, it will be breezy with showers in places; the showers most frequent and heavy in the west of the UK and also in the far south-east of England. Into Wednesday night, it will remain breezy with further showers in the west.

Thursday and Friday will have further showers or longer outbreaks of rain, most frequently in the north and west of the UK. The south-eastern quarter of England will have the best of any lengthier periods of dry weather. Over England and Wales, it will be windy on Friday, perhaps with gusts up to 40-50mph quite widely.

The unsettled theme will continue into this weekend with rain at times for many.

Monday 14 October – Sunday 20 October

Unsettled with rain and brisk winds at times.

The unsettled theme to the weather looks like persisting through next week. Low pressure areas over the north-east Atlantic will bring bands of rain and showers to many areas. The rain is likely to be heavy at times, particularly over western areas, bringing a threat of local flooding. The rain is likely to be accompanied by strong winds at times. Current indications are for the strongest winds and most widespread rain to be around the middle part of next week.

Despite an unsettled picture, it will be a rather mild week for most with temperatures mainly a little above the seasonal average. Once again, there should be a lack of night frosts. However, it does look like turning a touch cooler towards the end of the week, perhaps with winds switching from a south or south-westerly to a westerly direction by then.

Monday 21 October – Sunday 3 November

Further wet and windy weather for a time.

Unsettled conditions are expected to persist for a while longer with further bands of rain and brisk winds spreading from the west at times. Initially, it should stay rather mild too with temperatures a little above the seasonal average.

However, towards the turn of the month, we expect a more changeable weather pattern over the UK as low pressure areas starts to alternate with high pressure areas. Therefore, we should see some lengthier drier and calmer interludes in between the bands of rain. Temperatures are likely to fall nearer to the seasonal average, too, perhaps with a few chillier nights and occasional mist and fog.

Further ahead

October is shaping up to be a wet and windy month. We will take another look to see how things could change going into November.

BBC monthly outlook

Summary

Breezy and wet, then drier and calmer later

_________________________________

Saturday 12 October – Sunday 20 October

Breezy at times with showers and rain

This weekend will be unsettled at times. On Saturday, southern England and south Wales will have the focus of the unsettled weather with a lot of cloud together with outbreaks of rain. Central and northern areas of the UK will be generally drier and brighter but northwest Scotland will see a few showers. On Sunday, outbreaks of rain look like shifting further north across UK. The south should become drier as the day progresses. Temperatures mainly near to the seasonal average this weekend albeit with a chilly night on Saturday night in northern Scotland, perhaps with a frost in sheltered glens. Through the early part of next week, there will be patchy rain, mainly in the south and west.

The best of the drier and brighter weather is likely over central and north-eastern areas of the UK. Winds will be mostly gentle. From Wednesday to Friday, it is likely to become breezier and showery, with the heaviest of the showers expected over western areas. More prolonged rain may sweep eastwards across the UK for a time on Wednesday. However, there should also be some bright or sunny interludes. For the end of next week, unsettled conditions look like persisting with either showers or more prolonged spells of rain. Temperatures staying near or slightly above the seasonal average

Monday 21 October – Sunday 27 October

Further showery and breezy weather but quite mild

Another breezy and showery week is expected as further low pressure areas approach from the Atlantic. Western areas of the UK are likely to be wettest with rainfall amounts well above average. Therefore, there is the risk of occasional local flooding in the west. Further east, there will be some showers and occasional bands of rain but with some decent drier and brighter periods of weather too. For much of the UK, temperatures are likely to be near to slightly above the seasonal average. Any frost issues should be quite localised with most nights being frost-free. However, there is a slight chance that low pressure ends up further south than expected, which would allow chillier air to move in from the north.

Monday 28 October – Sunday 10 November

Gradually turning drier and calmer

For the end of October and start of November we should see the weather becoming more changeable. Much of the UK is likely to have further rain at times. However, there should also be some drier, brighter and calmer days thanks to low pressure areas giving way to high pressure at times. Overall, rainfall amounts and temperatures are likely to be close to the seasonal average. By around the second week of November, high pressure is likely to become more predominant over northern Europe.

This means we are likely to see lengthier drier and calmer interludes of weather with rainfall becoming more infrequent. However, there will be an increasing risk of overnight mist and fog in places as winds ease, and this could linger well into the mornings. Temperatures should stay near normal but with occasional chilly nights. There is some uncertainty over the timing of the expected transition to drier and calmer weather. There is a slight risk that low pressure areas persist, bringing wet weather for longer.

Further ahead

October is shaping up to be a wet and breezy month. We will take another look to see if we can still expect a significant change to drier and calmer weather for November.

UK weather forecast: Met Office issues weather warning as Typhoon Hagibis to impact UK

Quote

THE MET OFFICE has issued a yellow warning for rain as Typhoon Hagibis threatens to influence UK weather from the other side of the world. The warning will begin at 12pm on Monday and last for 12 hours. More than two inches of rain is expected to fall across much of England. This includes London, Birmingham and Manchester.

And Typhoon Hagibis, which has left at least 30 dead and more missing in Japan, is forecast to accelerate the jet stream and impact British weather next week. Met Office Science tweeted: “As warm moist air from Typhoon Hagibis comes north to clash with a cold front pushing south-east across Russia, the strengthening temperature contrast will accelerate the Jet Stream by 100mph in 48 hours!

“By affecting the jet, Hagibis could influence UK weather next week.” The Met Office added heavy rain could lead to flooding next week.

BBC monthly outlook

Summary

A change to drier and less breezy weather

_________________________________

Wednesday 16 October – Sunday 20 October

Breezy at times with showers and rain

The recent unsettled theme to the weather looks continuing this week. Wednesday will see outbreaks of rain clearing north-eastwards, leaving much of the UK with drier and brighter weather in the afternoon. Temperatures will be mainly near to the seasonal average. Thursday and Friday then look to be showery and cool as low pressure approaches from the Atlantic. The showers are likely to be most frequent and heavy over southern and western areas of England together with Wales where one or two thunderstorms could be mixed-in. The showers could be heavy enough to cause some local surface flooding. Further north and east across the country, there will also be showers but with some sunshine at times as well.

On Friday, southern counties of England will also have the threat of some strong and gusty south-westerly winds. The showery weather is likely to persist into this weekend. Again, some of the showers could be heavy and thundery, particularly near to southern and western coasts of England and Wales. There should also be sunshine at times. It is likely to be rather cool, perhaps turning chilly in the north on Sunday night.

Monday 21 October – Sunday 27 October

Changeable. Some rain interspersed with drier days

By the early part of next week, much of the British Isles should be drier as low pressure moves away towards southern Europe. However, it will be rather cool and Monday night could be quite cold in places with local frost and fog. Through the middle part of next week, we should experience a change to milder but cloudier and breezier conditions with southerly winds developing. There should also be some rain, albeit with the greatest chance of rain over western areas of the UK. Late in the week, we could well see another change in the weather. An area of high pressure is expected to move in, bringing drier but possibly cooler conditions, perhaps again with local overnight frost.

Monday 28 October – Sunday 10 November

Drier and calmer than recently

The end of October and early part of November are expected to be drier and calmer than in recent weeks. In recent weeks, low pressure areas moving in from the Atlantic have dominated our weather. However, we expect high pressure to extend near to the UK at times through this period while low pressure areas are pushed away further south over Europe. Overall, rainfall amounts are likely to be near to below the seasonal average with a lack of strong winds.

However, temperatures look like being often near or even a little above the seasonal average with winds more often from a southerly quarter than the north. Night time mist and fog is likely at times due to the lighter winds. Occasionally, fog could be problematic and be slow to clear during the days. There is a chance, though, that high pressure ends-up much further east than currently expected, which would open the door to wetter and windier weather from the Atlantic. However, if this happens, it would be generally mild.

Further ahead

A change in our weather pattern looks likely through the coming weeks. We will take a look in the next update to see if the somewhat drier and calmer weather could last into mid November.
