Storm ”Sophia” Causes Severe Disruptions Across Greece

Quote

The weather system “Sophia” made itself felt throughout Greece on Thursday as several areas experienced heavy snowfall, with disruptions being reported across the country throughout the day. So far, the wintry weather has affected travel to many areas in northern Greece, including the “Seli” ski area in Imathia, which had to shut down due to the heavy snowfall and extreme cold.

Seli Ski Center president Kostas Tzelepis said that the decision “will avert disaster. We don’t want to expose people to danger.” There is an intense snowstorm in the area, he said, and temperatures has dropped to below -7 degrees Celsius (19 Fahrenheit), making travel by road extremely dangerous.

BBC monthly outlook

Summary

Becoming more unsettled, then turning colder

Saturday 5 January—Sunday 13 January

Windy for a time but otherwise relatively settled

High pressure has been the dominant feature of our weather for a while now, and it looks likely to remain fairly significant this weekend and to a certain extent, next week too.
Saturday will be dry across most parts of the country although a cold front will move in from the Atlantic on Saturday afternoon, bringing outbreaks of rain to Scotland and Northern Ireland in the evening, then northern England and Wales overnight. This front is not a particularly active feature though and it will become weaker over time, so the rain it brings will not be particularly heavy and it will become increasingly patchy. Sunday may see a little rain across the north of the UK, most likely over northern England, but the south should remain dry. Much of Scotland will be dry with sunny spells.

After a chilly start to the weekend, temperatures should be a little nearer to normal by Sunday. The new week is likely to start on a more unsettled note as a deep low pressure system passes the north of the UK. This system will bring a spell of windy weather to many areas, and a risk of gales for Scotland. There will also be showers and more widespread rain too. By Tuesday, the low pressure system will be to our east and, with high pressure to the west, we will have a spell of cool northwesterly or even northerly winds. Some wintry showers are also possible. The second half of the week should see high pressure building back towards the UK although perhaps not becoming the dominant feature that it has been. There will be a chance of unsettled weather affecting the country, perhaps most likely next weekend, but many areas will have a relatively dry and calm end to the week.

Monday 14 January—Sunday 20 January

Wetter, windier and cooler

We'll see the ridge of high pressure shifting southwards and westwards away from the UK. This will allow northwesterly winds to affect the country, pushing cooler air across most regions. It will probably be wetter than the coming week, particularly across the northwest of the UK and there will be a chance of some spells of windy weather too. We are likely to see a cooling trend with regard to temperatures and it could become rather chilly by the end of the week. This would mean that there will be a greater chance of wintry showers across northern parts of the country than we have seen for much of the winter so far.

As ever, there is a little uncertainty in the forecast at this range. The main alternative to our expected forecast is that high pressure will 'rebuild' across the south of the UK. This would tend to limit the amount of northwesterly winds we see, so in this scenario it would be less cold, and probably less wet and windy too. There would still be the chance of occasional spells of wetter and windier weather too.

Monday 21 January—Sunday 3 February

Probably, but not definitely, becoming colder

In our last outlook, we mentioned the possibility of it becoming colder during the middle or end of January, due to developments in the upper atmosphere over the North Pole. There has been a dramatic rise in the temperature of the Arctic stratosphere. Meteorologists call this kind of event a Sudden Stratospheric Warming or SSW. They happen several times per decade and are part of the natural variability of the global climate system. The SSW event that has just occurred has disrupted the winds which make up the polar vortex, and it looks as though this disruption could continue for several weeks.

This, combined with other global weather patterns, means that the UK has an increased threat of significantly colder weather developing as we head through the final third of January and into February. Our longer-range forecast data certainly shows a trend towards colder weather across northern Europe, including the UK, at the end of this month and well into the start of February. There are also indications of an increased risk of snow for the UK. However, there is still some uncertainty over the extent to which the cold weather will affect us. In fact, there is even a 25% chance that we could continue to be affected by Atlantic weather systems, with any cold air tending to be confined to other parts of Europe.

Three-hour Ryanair plane journey to Greece takes nearly a day

Quote

Flights from London to Thessaloniki should take around three hours but for dozens of Ryanair passengers it lasted nearly 24, with the Greek government forced to step in to help out. Foggy conditions in Greece meant the plane from Stansted airport was diverted to Timisoara in western Romania late on Friday.

This decision angered many of the 200 passengers, who wanted to fly closer to their original destination. They became more frustrated when the airline offered to transport them to Thessaloniki by bus - a journey of 480 miles that takes over eight hours.

Heavy snow in Germany, Austria, Greece causes chaos for travellers

Quote

Heavy snowfalls across Europe — even in Greece — have thrown travel plans into chaos, trapping hundreds in alpine regions and airports, and leaving snow on Italian beaches.

Heavy snow caused travel chaos in parts of Germany and Austria as authorities closed roads and train routes because of avalanche danger and airports reported weather-related cancellations on Saturday. Munich Airport, Germany’s second biggest, said 120 flights were cancelled and others were delayed while workers cleared runways of snow and removed ice from planes.

Seven die in massive Alps snowfall from Germany to Italy

Quote

At least seven people have died in the Alps during a weekend of heavy snow, with skiers facing a high avalanche risk in Austria, Germany and Italy. Two separate avalanches killed two German skiers in Austria's Vorarlberg mountains. A third skier died in Pongau district, near Salzburg. In Bavaria, a skier died when a tree collapsed near Bad Tölz. An avalanche killed a young woman in Bavaria's Teisenberg mountains.

Italy is in the grip of a cold snap - snow has even reached Matera, in the far south. There is also snow on Mt Vesuvius near Naples - a rare sight. The heavy snow has forced many schools to close temporarily across Bavaria, and has disrupted some train services there. More heavy snow is expected in the coming days - as much as 120cm (4ft) of fresh snow in Austria by Thursday.

Is the 'Beast from the East' making a comeback?

Temperature models indicate a colder than average week is awaiting Britain towards the end of the month.

Quote

Britain might be facing a cold snap by the end of January, if early European weather predictions are correct. But any cold front will come after unseasonably warm weather, with some parts of the country experiencing double figure temperatures this weekend. Forecasters have said the same weather pattern which sparked last year's 'Beast from the East', bringing freezing temperatures and heavy snow, could return.

Temperature maps from the European Commission indicate Britain will have temperatures of about 2-3C during the second half of January, slightly cooler than average for this time of year.

BBC monthly outlook

Summary

Becoming unsettled for a time, then colder

Wednesday 9 January—Sunday 13 January

Chilly initially but turning milder and breezier

High pressure has been the dominant feature of our weather for a while now and it will continue to be so through the next few days. Thanks to the high pressure area, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will see lengthy periods of dry weather albeit with a lot of cloud at times. The cloud will be thick enough at times to bring occasional drizzle, mainly to western and northwestern fringes of the UK. After a chilly day and night on Wednesday, temperatures will slowly rise through Thursday and Friday as somewhat milder air moves in from the west. This weekend, the high pressure area will move further away to the south-west, leaving breezier and showery conditions. Showers and rain are likely to be most frequent over northwestern parts of the UK. However, there should also be some sunshine at times.
Staying rather mild for most too.

Monday 14 January—Sunday 20 January

Breezy with rain at times. Rather mild.

Next week is likely to be predominated by west to north-westerly winds, bringing in bands of rain and showers from the Atlantic at times. The showers and rain are likely to be most frequent over western and north-western areas of the UK. Eastern and south-eastern areas of the UK will see fewer outbreaks of rain with some decent drier and brighter interludes.
It is likely to be windy at times for many.

Temperatures are likely to alternate between the seasonal average and above the seasonal average. Most places should have some rather mild days with any chillier spells being shortlived. However, there is a slight chance (around a 20% probability) that colder northerly winds develop from around mid-week onwards. If that happens, we would expect to see a return to overnight frosts as well as some wintry showers. Currently, though, a rather mild outlook is expected to dominate next week.

Monday 21 January—Sunday 3 February

An increasing chance of cold, wintry weather.

There continue to be increasing chances of some cold, wintry weather through late January and into the start of February. In our previous outlooks, we have mentioned developments in the upper atmosphere over the North Pole. At the start of January, there was a dramatic rise in the temperature of the arctic stratosphere. Meteorologists call this kind of event a Sudden Stratospheric Warming or SSW. They happen several times per decade and are part of the natural variability of the global climate system.

The recent SSW event combined with other global scale weather patterns means that the UK has an increased threat of significantly colder weather developing as we head through the final third of January and into February. Most likely are for conditions to become generally colder from the north but also somewhat drier and less windy. There is the elevated chance of occasional snow, though, initially for the north of the UK before this risk extends to southern areas too. The main uncertainty is over the duration of the expected colder spell of weather - there are chances that occasionally milder, wetter and breezier conditions could spread from the west at times. Overall, though, conditions are expected to be colder than recently.

Next Update

We will take another look to see if there is a clearer picture on the duration and severity of the colder weather favoured later this month and into early February.

Snowy Greece sees temperatures plunge to -23C

Transport is badly affected in northern areas of the country, while snow and ice in Athens lead to the closure of many schools.

Quote

Greece has been freezing in temperatures as low as -23C (-9F) as some of Athens' most famous monuments got a dusting of snow. The -23C figure was recorded in the northern city of Florina and led to road closures and disruption to transport.

Further south in the capital, Athens, snow fell around monuments such as the Temple of Zeus as schools closed and some roads became impassable because of ice. Courthouses also shut up shop, while there was a minimal service from some other state services and banks

UK weather: Parts of Britain could see snow by end of next week

There is an increased chance of snowfall in the North and the East with snowfall "likely" on northern hills in Scotland.

There is an "enhanced risk of snow" in parts of the UK from late next week, according to a Met Office forecast. It is predicting cold spells and an increased chance of the white stuff falling in the North and the East, and snow is "likely" on northern hills in Scotland.

Accuweather says a cold snap is due in the next fortnight and will bring the first flurry of the year.

In Canterbury, 4.4 cms of snow are expected on Sunday, January 27, with 3.9 cms predicted for Tunbridge Wells.

East Grinstead, Uckfield, Crowborough, Lewes and Brighton also have a similarly confident prediction:

Snow brings parts of Europe to standstill

Quote

Heavy snowfalls brought chaos to parts of Germany and Sweden on Friday, leaving roads blocked, trains halted and schools shut. The Red Cross helped drivers stuck on a motorway in the southern German state of Bavaria as schools and rail services were also hit. A nine-year-old boy was killed by a falling tree on Thursday. Northern Sweden was hit by a storm that made roads impassable.
