BBC monthly outlook

Wednesday 7 November—Sunday 11 November

Staying mild but rain and brisk winds at times

A mild but blustery day on Wednesday with outbreaks of rain spreading slowly northwards and eastwards across the UK. The rain will be heaviest in the west and south. There will be a few bright spells, though, with the best of those in the north and east. Brisk south to south-easterly winds will gust to around 35-45mph quite widely. Highs of typically 10-14 Celsius.
On Thursday, further pulses of rain are likely to spread northwards over western parts of the UK. Meanwhile, eastern England and north-east Scotland will be often dry with some bright or sunny spells. Breezy but mild again with highs ranging from around 10 Celsius in the north to 14 Celsius in the south.

Friday will also be fairly mild but blustery with a strengthening south tosouth-easterly wind. Once again, outbreaks of rain are likely to be most widespread over western areas of the UK although some rain should reach the east later on. Unsettled and breezy at times this weekend withshower or longer spells of rain. On Saturday, the showers are likely to be heaviest in the south and west. Some of those showers could be heavy and thundery. Meanwhile, there should be sunshine at times further north and east with fewer showers. Sunday may see more widespread rain spreading from the south into parts of England and Wales later in the day but otherwise a mixture of bright spells and showers are likely.

Monday 12 November—Sunday 18 November

Mild again. Wettest in the west

Through next week, southerly winds are likely to predominate, bringing in mild conditions from southern Europe. Therefore, temperatures will be above the normal for November quite widely on most days. However, there are likely to some regional variations to the weather. Wettest and breeziest conditions are likely to be over western areas of the UK. Indeed, low pressure areas over the Atlantic are likely to bring pulses of rain northwards across some western areas of England along with Wales and Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, rainfall is likely to be occasional for central and eastern areas of the UK and also much of Scotland; these areas should see at least a few fine, dry days.

Confidence in the mild conditions is quite high but there are uncertainties over the extent of rainfall. Indeed, there are chances that high pressure builds in from the east through the second half of the week to bring more widespread dry and calmer conditions. If this happens, there would also be an elevated risk of overnight and morning fog.

Monday 19 November—Sunday 2 December

Wet in the north west but drier in the south

Through late November, winds are likely to be often from the south and west, continuing to bring rather mild conditions to the country. Any colder weather is unlikely to be prolonged or significant. Indeed, we are likely to see fewer night frosts than normal for the time of year. Low pressure areas are likely to move in from the Atlantic, being driven in along a strong jet stream at times (a ribbon of strong winds in the upper atmosphere). These low pressure areas are expected to bring frequent wet conditions to western and north-western areas of the UK. Indeed, there could be some high rainfall totals for western Scotland, Northern Ireland and in Cumbria. These areas are also likely to be windy at times. Meanwhile, rainfall should be less frequent further south and east across the country. Central and eastern areas of England are actually favoured to be less wet than normal for the time of year.

Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to be often near to above the seasonal average over much of the UK. Once again, there is some uncertainty over the extent of rainfall. Initially, there are chances of more widespread dry and calm conditions around mid-month. However, towards the end of the month and into the start of December, more widespread wet and windy, or even stormy conditions cannot be ruled out.

Next Update

We will take another look to see whether the north-west - south-east split to the weather is likely to persist and whether north-western areas are likely to continue having the wettest and windiest conditions through the coming weeks.

UK weather forecast: WALL OF SNOW to smash Britain as polar blast freezes November

Quote

A ‘MINI ice-age’ winter blast will bring a colossal wall of snow smashing through Britain THIS MONTH as the nation braces for Arctic gales, blizzards and sub-zero temperatures.

Rare fluctuations in solar activity will drive a freak twist in the jet stream opening the floodgates to a bank of bitter Polar air during the second half of November, experts warn. Freezing winds and deep drifting snow will grind swathes of the country to a halt while violent storms threaten explosive outbreaks of thundersnow. Britons have been told to brace for weeks of severe disruption with savage weather expected to bring chaos on roads and transport networks through Christmas.

BBC monthly outlook

Wednesday 14 November—Sunday 18 November

A largely dry and settled end to the week

The first half of this week was very unsettled and showery, and some parts of the country saw some heavy and thundery downpours. The end of the week will be quite different as high pressure starts to spread across the country and the weather becomes much drier and calmer.

There will be some rain on Wednesday which looks to be a cloudy and wet day across the north and west of the UK. Some upland areas of western Scotland and northern England could see persistent and at times heavy rain. The south and east should remain largely dry and bright. Thursday will also see some rain in the northwest but drier weather elsewhere. Wednesday and Thursday will also be a very mild for the time of year.

Friday and the weekend will see high pressure taking control and dry weather for most areas. Temperatures will still be a little above normal although not quite as mild as Wednesday and Thursday.

However, as we sometimes see at this time of year, calm conditions can allow fairly widespread mist and fog to develop overnight, and this can be very slow to clear during the day. There is a chance that some patches of mist and fog could linger all day on Thursday and Friday. Fog should be less of a problem over the weekend though as winds freshen a little, but the nights will turn chillier.

Monday 19 November—Sunday 25 November

Often dry and calm but rather cool

High pressure is expected to be centred over Scandinavia and the North Sea for much of next week. It will be close enough to the UK to bring largely fine and dry weather at the start of the week. However, we will see easterly winds developing on the southern flank of the high pressure area, and at this time of year easterly winds generally mean cooler weather for the UK.

Temperatures are expected to be close to normal at the start of the week but to fall below average by the middle to end of the week - quite a contrast to the recent mild weather.

Although high pressure normally brings fine and dry weather, there will be a chance of showers developing in the North Sea being blown into eastern parts of the UK. The shower risk is likely to be minimal at first but by midweek, there will be a moderate risk of showers for eastern counties of England and Scotland. A few showers could creep a bit further west too.

It is likely to be too windy for widespread mist and fog but low cloud in the North Sea could bring some gloomy days to parts of England and Scotland. Sheltered western parts of the UK should have the best chance of staying dry and seeing some sunny spells too.

Monday 26 November—Sunday 9 December

Probably turning breezier and wetter but milder

The latest outlook indicates a possible change in weather pattern at the end month and into the start of December. The last few days of November are likely to see little change, with high pressure still expected to be close to the north or northwest of Europe, but as we head into December there are signs that the area of high pressure will shift southwards and eastwards across Europe. This would allow Atlantic weather systems to have more of an influence, bringing more unsettled conditions. Winds will start to change direction from easterlies to southwesterlies, meaning temperatures could return to nearer normal, perhaps even slightly above what you'd expect for the time of year.

The transition from settled to unsettled weather looks to be a bit messy though, and there is some uncertainty over how quickly it will happen. In fact, there is an alternative forecast which has high pressure remaining more of a feature across northern and western Europe. This would suggest that it would remain cool and relatively dry and calm across the UK. There seems to be a fairly low chance of this though, with it much more likely that we'll see a return to a more normal westerly or south-westerly pattern.

Next Update

Can we expect more unsettled conditions as we move towards the middle of December?

Wow the BBC outlook for end of November into early December doesn't look to positive for coldies and goes against what many are suggesting on the MOD thread. That said they are hedging their bets a bit with that "alternative forecast" lol!!

Cop out from the BBC,covering all angles. So they will claim they got the forecast correct whatever happens.

And no mention whatsoever of snow anywhere in the country upto Dec 9,despite the METO mentioning a possibility of it even at low levels now.

So that forecast already wrong, still won’t bother BBC not accountable or answerable  to anyone and they were still continue with these monthly forecasts, right or wrong!

They all seem to be coming into line. Turning colder with frost and fog in coming days. Snowy later next week, mainly in the east but possibly over the whole UK.

Just what we need. Our "Indian Summer" had frost and ice this morning and now we are told it will get much colder!

Ladybower Reservoir's low water reveals 'drowned' village

Quote

Dry conditions are believed to have caused extremely low water levels at a Derbyshire reservoir, revealing the remains of a flooded settlement.

Derwent made way for the Ladybower Reservoir, which was built between 1935 and 1943.

The rare sight of the "exposed village" has attracted many people to the reservoir, owned by Severn Trent Water in the Peak District.

Earlier in November, one man had to be rescued after he got stuck in the mud while inspecting the usually-submerged ruins.

Snowy Tuesday Likely Followed By ‘Coldest Thanksgiving In More Than 100 Years’

Quote

BOSTON (CBS) — Merry Christmas! Oh wait, it’s only November? Seems only fitting that we end this cloudy, wet (some would call it miserable) fall season with a blast of cold that would be called harsh even in the heart of winter. Next up a rainy and SNOWY Tuesday, (the ninth wet Tuesday in the last 11). It’s all about location, location, location today. From rain to several inches of snow in just a 25-to-50 mile drive, buckle up… literally.

Bad news for those high school football games and turkey trots on Thursday morning. We are forecasting temperatures and wind chills just about as cold as you can get in mid-to-late November. Record lows and record low max temperatures are likely to be set this Thanksgiving. Wind chill values Thursday morning will be below zero. This should be the coldest Thanksgiving in more than 100 years and potentially the coldest ever recorded in Boston. Having fun yet?

Yet another non- news story about the weather from the Express to add to the many and the annual rubbish being spouted by James Madden. (nothing changes)

'Bookmaker Ladbrokes has slashed the odds from 4/1 to 6/4 on this winter turning into the coldest on record.' - they might know about sport but totally clueless about the weather - what ridiculously short odds on that happening!!!...they obviously think Madden is an expert.
