The weather company 3-monthly update

Quote

Stormy Pattern across South

Andover, MA, 20 March 2018 – For the aggregate April-June period, The Weather Company, an IBM Business, is forecasting below-normal temperatures for northern mainland Europe and Scandinavia and above-normal temperatures across southern Europe.

“The second spell of unusual cold weather is ongoing, driven by an extended period of blocking,” said Dr. Todd Crawford, chief meteorologist with The Weather Company. “As we head into April, most of our statistical/dynamical guidance suggests we will get at least one more big cold spell before the blocking pattern fades, with warmer and wetter weather confined to parts of southern Europe.”

For the April-June 2018 period, The Weather Company is forecasting the following temperatures:

April

  • Nordic region – Colder than normal
  • U.K. – Colder than normal
  • Northern Mainland – Colder than normal
  • Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal east, colder than normal west

May

  • Nordic region – Warmer than normal west, cooler than normal east
  • U.K. – Warmer than normal
  • Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal west, cooler than normal east
  • Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal west, cooler than normal east

June

  • Nordic region – Cooler than normal
  • U.K. – Near normal
  • Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal, except far north
  • Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal

Looks potentially rubbish here with lots of cloud, as is often the case with easterly winds at this time of year, but with any luck it will stay dry. Even a couple of dry days has made a big difference.

BBC monthly outlook

Monday 9 April—Sunday 15 April

Still wet for a time then turning more settled

An easterly wind flow will develop through the early part of next week and low pressure close to southern and western parts of the UK will produce areas of rain and drizzle. Many regions are likely to see further wet conditions at some stage and some of the rain will be heavy with the additional risk of lightning over SE England should warm, humid air over France fuel a few thunderstorms here. The easterly wind will be much less cold than recent easterly spells this year as this time the source of origin will be the eastern Mediterranean and eastern Europe rather than the Arctic.

The proximity of low pressure to the south could result in further rain to southern regions of the UK from middle part of next week on. Drier and calmer than usual conditions over more northern areas are expected as high pressure over Scandinavia exerts enough influence to prevent any meaningful unsettled weather. Close to average temperatures for a time, then perhaps the chance of warmer conditions into the weekend.

Monday 16 April—Sunday 29 April

Settled for a time. Perhaps wet late April

Longer-range models indicate the continued migration of high pressure towards the UK during the middle of April. Although the exact pattern will very much be dependent on the orientation of that high, current indications suggest an easterly or perhaps south-easterly airflow continuing. Rather dry conditions are expected to predominate, with frontal systems expected to remain to the south-west of the UK by this point and then only weak features if they do make it to our shores. Temperatures are expected to remain around or slightly above average with any cool air from the north-east being offset by mild days.

As we look towards the end of April, there are some signs that high pressure will move away from the UK, allowing low pressure to become a more frequent visitor from the North Atlantic. Wetter and breezier conditions may return with a cooler feel to temperatures but there are some question marks over quite how unsettled it will be. Inevitably, the increasing strength of the sun may allow some heavy showers to develop too - a stark contrast to the drier weather expected through the middle of April.

Next Update

Will we see high pressure hanging on for longer than expected through late April?

Unlikely to be a complete cloud fest will be day to day variations could be looking at something like cloudy mornings then the sun burns it away for the afternoon etc
