They STILL haven't told us it's going to be the coldest and snowiest winter in X amount of years yet! :shok:

Didn't the Daily Mail already hedge their bets a few weeks ago on 17 storms this winter?

Well that's a downgrade from the triple threat they were forecasting yesterday.

I think we'll be alright...

Someone give me five minutes in a locked room with that tool Nathan Rao. His ludicrous scaremongering and frankly irresponsible articles have actually frightened a few members of my extended family (who happen to be of advanced years) and it took me all of this morning to convincingly reassure them that these articles are utterly over the top rot.

Inaccurate articles are one thing, articles which actually frighten the vulnerable and ill-informed are another thing altogether.

Rao deserves a good shoeing. Absolutely fuming he gets away with it time and time again.

Double Hurricane! It's just ridiculous scare mongering. I can understand the above as I myself a few times have had to calm 'very' elderly members of the family down after they picked up on this type of rubbish in the past. 'Brutal attack on Britain' this is the weather not bloomin War!

BBC monthly outlook

Monday 2 October—Sunday 8 October
Windy start to October.

Strong winds will be the main feature of the weather at the start of this week, thanks to a deep area of low pressure positioned just to the north of Scotland. Strong to gale force winds over much of the British Isles with severe gales for a time in the North. There will also be brighter conditions and blustery showers.

The weather will quieten down for a short time during Tuesday and into Wednesday, winds will become lighter and showers will die out leaving sunny spells. This settled weather will not last for long though, with further wet and windy weather set to affect northern areas later on Wednesday, edging southwards to many areas during Thursday.

On Friday and into the weekend, a more pronounced ridge of high pressure will move across the British Isles bringing a longer period of drier weather with some sunshine and lighter winds. At the same time though the high will also bring cold nights and some mist and fog. There will be rain at times in the Northwest. Throughout this week, daytime temperatures will be very close to normal for early October which is in the range from 12 Celsius in northern Scotland to 17 Celsius in the southeast of England.

Monday 9 October—Sunday 15 October
More settled but not for long

High pressure centred over more southern parts of the British Isles is expected to build northwards to give a drier few days with some sunshine. There will also be chilly nights with clear skies and lighter winds allowing temperatures to fall sharply leading to a touch of frost in rural locations. There is also a risk of overnight mist and fog which will be slow to clear. Daytime temperatures will remain close to normal. At this stage it does look as though the settled weather will not last for long with areas of low pressure expected to push in from the Atlantic bringing outbreaks of rain and strengthening winds during the second half of the week and into the weekend.

Monday 16 October—Sunday 29 October
More of the same

The second half of October looks likely to be changeable with Atlantic weather systems set to dominate our weather. A strong jet stream, the fast moving ribbon of air high up in the atmosphere, will be the mechanism to transport areas of low pressure close to the British Isles. We will see spells of wet and windy weather crossing the country followed by drier, brighter, quieter interludes. The heaviest rain and strongest winds are likely to be across the north and west of Scotland as well as Northern Ireland while southeast England will hang on to the driest weather. An Atlantic airstream is not a particularly cold one with temperatures remaining close to normal for the time of year.

Next week

Any sign of snow?

BBC monthly outlook

Monday 9 October—Monday 16 October

Briefly warm for some

The week ahead has further unsettled weather in store. Monday will be a cloudy day in general, but mostly dry aside from a few outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Later in the day a weather front will cross northern parts of the UK bringing thicker cloud and rain here which will slowly track south towards southern England and Wales overnight into Tuesday. A second weather system will arrive in the northwest later on Tuesday bringing heavy rain for some. This band of rain will track southwards on Wednesday, and will be accompanied by strong winds, especially around coasts.

The end of the week marks a change to more settled conditions with a ridge of high pressure building across all parts on Thursday leading to a largely dry and fine day, though with some rain arriving in the west later.

Rain will continue to affect the northwest during the day on Friday and it's likely to be heavy at times. This rain should ease with some sunny spells developing on Saturday. However, further south and east, the ridge of high pressure will continue to give fine and settled conditions on both Friday and Saturday and it will feel very warm in the sunshine with light winds. Some parts of central and southern England in particular could see temperatures reach up to the low 20's Celsius.

On Sunday or perhaps Monday, a band of rain will cross the UK, leading to a return to fresher conditions.

Monday 16 October—Monday 23 October

Some fine and settled weather in store

Once this band of rain has cleared to the southeast of the UK in the early part of the week, the UK is likely to see high pressure build in once again. This will lead to generally fine and dry conditions prevailing across many parts, although it will be chilly overnight with frost and patches of fog likely.

Monday 23 October—Monday 30 October

Normal Autumn resumes

Towards the end of the month, unsettled weather looks likely to make a return, with areas of low pressure developing in the Atlantic and moving across the UK bringing strong winds and rain at times, especially across the north and west. However, there will also be drier and clearer interludes allowing sunny spells by daytime although a risk of frost and fog overnight.
