Wildlife 'thrived' in 2013 after hot summer

The hot summer in the UK provided a much-needed boost for wildlife with butterflies, moths and grasshoppers all thriving, the National Trust says. The warm weather also led to an explosion of berries, nuts and seeds.  The trust's Matthew Oates said 2013 was "one of the most remarkable wildlife years in living memory". But it said a cold, late spring meant badgers and hedgehogs did not have their usual quantity of worms, and some seabirds died from starvation. 'Real cracker' Bees and crickets were among other winners. The distinctive tree bumblebee - which only began to colonise in the UK 12 years ago - was seen north of Hadrian's Wall for the first time. Many insects had been scarce last year because of poor weather. The cool spring also provided a long flowering season for snowdrops, primrose and bluebells. And in some places, there was an explosion of orchids.

Interesting that none of the links on James Madden's Exacta Weather Facebook pages to White Christmas predictions et al. now work. He hasn't posted there since December 23rd. December is 1.9 C above the CET average and his widespread snow events have crashed and burned. I think he's now hiding.

Only the tabloids and red tops even take stock of what he say's, the rest of us "sensible" people ignore him these days, if the *media* was not fed by his forecasts of new ice ages he would vanish.

Oh joy.

What an utterly repugnant winter this is fast turning into.

Will be bidding December 2013 a hearty good riddance...utterly vile. Flooding...power cuts...damage..  and worst of all....peoples Christmases ruined for one reason or another.

Gales and heavy rain forecast to prolong Christmas weather misery

Flood warnings remain in force for parts of Wales, England and Scotland as 80mph gales are predicted for south-west England

A day of frost and sunshine on Sunday may prove to have been merely a brief respite from storms, with the Met Office warning that more gales and heavy rain will sweep in from the south-west to disrupt the Monday morning commute.

Although engineers restored power to thousands of homes over the weekend, around 600 remain without electricity, and some have been cut off since Christmas Eve.

One power company boss, Basil Scarsella, the chief exectuive of UK Power Networks, which owns electricity lines and cables in the south-east, admitted to the Mail on Sunday: "We could not have avoided the damage caused by the storm, but we could have responded to it better."

Many places are threatened with further flooding if heavy rain falls on ground that is already saturated.

Yellow severe weather warnings for both gales of up to 80mph and heavy rain have been issued for parts of south Wales and south-west England, and flood warnings remain in force for parts of Wales, England and Scotland. It has also warned of the danger of ice patches in the south-west on Monday night as temperatures drop to below freezing.

An icy morning on Sunday forced the closure of a section of the M69 motorway in Leicestershire after black ice led to a series of collisions.

George Goodfellow, a forecaster for MeteoGroup, said: "Normally, we would say this is a typical winter storm but because we're still recovering from a string of other storms it is likely to cause more disruption and flooding." He said the south-west would continue to bear the brunt of the storm.

Some 1,300 properties have been flooded during the recent storms in England, the Environment Agency (EA) said.

In Kent Power Networks sent catering vans over the weekend to one of the worst affected villages, Yalding, where on Friday prime minister David Cameron was greeted with angry complaints that the village had been abandoned, with many houses both flooded and without power. The firm also pledged to boost compensation payments from the regular £27 to £75 for anyone who had been without power for more than 48 hours including Christmas Day – with larger payments for those cut off for longer than 60 hours.

In Kent, Surrey and Sussex more than 300 properties were still without power on Sunday, but the firm said that engineers had worked late into the night and resumed early in the morning to restore supply, and that the vast majority of supplies were back to normal. Most of those still without power were single isolated properties. After his encounters, the prime minister tweeted on Saturday : "I've asked the Dept for Communities & Local Govt to ensure councils have robust plans in case of bad weather and flooding over New Year."

In Edinburgh the organisers of the Hogmanay celebrations, which bring thousands of tourists to the city, will be keeping an anxious eye on the forecasts: although they went ahead last year, bad weather forced last-minute cancellations on several occasions in recent years. Further gales are forecast for New Year's Eve, and heavy rain on New Year's Day.

New Year will be a 'total washout' with storms set to batter Britain for a month

BRITAIN faces a month of torrential rain and gales as fresh storms threaten New Year misery. The deluge is forecast to continue throughout January, with areas already suffering flooding braced for more chaos. The latest onslaught was due last night with fierce Atlantic storms and 90mph gales predicted to batter the UK all this week. The warning comes after Christmas storms left some areas under inches of floodwater and thousands of homes without power for almost a week.

Forecasters last night warned up to four inches of rain could fall in parts of the UK over the next 10 days – with the South once again bearing the brunt. David Cameron urged the Department for Communities and Local Government to “ensure councils have robust plans†in place. The Government’s Cobra emergency committee has discussed the crisis and agreed to give funding to councils struggling to cope.

Wet start to 2014 as a month of rain set to fall this week

THOUSANDS of people are set to face more misery as new storms will ensure a wet and windy start to the New Year. Forecasters say up to a month’s worth of rain is predicted to fall between yesterday and Friday on higher ground in the South, West and North-west. Heavy rain and gusts of up to 80mph will arrive today, with only a brief respite at midnight as the nation welcomes in 2014. The country will then be deluged with rain on New Year’s Day, with up to two inches predicted in some parts and the Environment Agency has warned of fresh floods. Then as millions return to work on Thursday after the festive break, they will be greeted with blustery winds and showers, while another storm will bring heavy rain and winds in the South and West on Friday. Homeowners across the country are still cleaning up after storms caused some areas to become flooded and thousands of homes to lose power before Christmas, forcing many people to swap their dark, freezing homes for temporary accommodation. On Sunday, the most recent storm swept in from the Atlantic and caused a number of major roads to become flooded or buried under fallen trees while landslips created further problems for rail passengers.

Weather: Navy Chopper In Flooded Farm Rescue

Seven people and two dogs have been airlifted to safety by a Royal Navy helicopter after a farm was flooded during ongoing bad weather in Scotland. The group - which included four children - were rescued from a farm in Closeburn, near Thornhill, by a helicopter team working with night vision goggles. "We winched Petty Officer (Taff) Ashman down to the ground about 50 yards from a barn," said Lieutenant Commander Rob Suckling from the helicopter crew. "We then moved away to find a good landing spot while PO Ashman made his way to the farm.

No one was hurt and all seemed to be in pretty good spirits ... Apart from some low cloud on our way down to Dumfriesshire, conditions were benign and we managed to get the job done quickly. "The rescue came as Britain prepares for further storms. The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for rain on New Year's Day in southern England and western Scotland. There are fears of localised flooding in the southwest and southeast of England as a storm blows in from the Atlantic today. Flood warnings have been issued by the Environment Agency (EA) as areas yet to recover from Christmas storms are expected to struggle to cope with further rain.

James Madden has admitted he was wrong for December

Do some people literally want blood from a stone???December was off mark in terms of my usual forecasting accuracy, which I have stated many times. However, I was not the only forecaster to forecast a colder than average December. Was I???THINK!!!The Met Office forecast a colder than average December only 10 days before the start of winter (much later than mine) @http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/media/pdf/s/c/A3_plots-temp-DJF.pdfThey would not have done this had they thought it was not going to happen. However, they have a right to serve the public and adjust their forecasts on a daily basis (something I don't do, as it defeats the object).January & February still have to run yet (the pinnacle point of my winter forecast and as clearly stated in all media articles, which is of very high confidence).A forecast is a forecast and I would ask anyone with anything to say/question, to judge the year in review and all the correct long-range predictions for 2009-2013, not one specific month @ http://www.exactaweather.com/UK_Long_Range_Forecast.htmlIf you can show me something similar from elsewhere or from those who have so much to say on the subject, please post the links to these below + proof (dates) + http://www.exactaweather.com/Accuracy.htmlNovember was also colder than average with snow events, not marginally colder or a little colder than average (72 of the last 100 Novembers were warmer than 2013).However, others will dress this up as a non-event as they 'ALL' forecast a mild to very mild month overall.

When someone spends most of their time defending their predictions that's a good indication to be wary I think! The Met Office forecast a somewhat colder than average December but they stressed large uncertainty and did not confidently predict a Day After Tomorrow apocalypse. I will trust the Met Office over anyone else out there personally.

It's a washout! Britain battered by half a month's rain with worse to come

FLOODY HELL: Britain braced for MONTHS of heavy rain and yet MORE winter storms

BRITAIN is facing MONTHS of relentless heavy rain forecasters warned tonight - sparking fears of serious mass-flooding across the country. The dire warnings of yet MORE storms came as half a month’s rain fell across already saturated parts of the country in just a few hours today. The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for later this week across South West and North West England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, with heavy rain also expected across much of South East England. It warned the unsettled weather would persist until the end of January at least, with other forecasters insisting the chaos could last all winter. The Environment Agency has already issued 22 flood warnings across the UK for tomorrow and 41 for Friday. Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: "We have had three weeks worth of rain compared to what we would normally expect for this time of year in the last 72 hours alone, which means at least three to five inches of water in the worst-hit areas, and there is more heavy rain on its way.

Weather: Savage Wind And Rain Pummels UK

Warnings of further flooding are issued as rescue workers continue the search for several people not seen since New Year's Eve.

Emergency services are searching for people missing in vicious weather lashing Britain, as the Government called an urgent meeting over the conditions. Floods and strong winds have hit households across the country, with roads closed, train services disrupted and hundreds of homes without electricity.

A 27-year-old man is feared dead after being swept out to sea in Cornwall while celebrating the new year on the beach with friends. That came after a woman died in the surf in north Devon. The coastguard is also searching for a man who is believed to into the River Stour in Christchurch, Dorset. And police across the country are searching for several people who have not been seen since New Year's Eve.

More than 300 weather warnings and alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency, affecting every region of England and Wales. Dozens of flood warnings have been put in place, mostly in the South East and South West, with strong winds of up to 60 to 70mph, heavy downpours and more flooding forecast over the coming days. Craig Woolhouse, the Environment Agency's head of flood incident management, said: "Strong winds and large waves along the west and south coasts of England are forecast between Friday and Sunday, coinciding with high tides. "Impacts could include flooding affecting some coastal properties and communities. "Coastal paths and promenades could be highly dangerous as there is an increased risk of being swept out to sea. People are warned to stay away from the shoreline. "Environment Agency teams are out on the ground making sure flood defences are in good working order, monitoring sea levels and preparing to issue flood alerts and warnings."

A Cornwall police spokesman said: "There are people who enjoy swimming in all weathers as well as those who may under-estimate the danger a rough sea can pose. "During the current bad weather, we would appeal to everyone to use common sense and not put themselves in unnecessary danger." Meanwhile, in Liphook, Hampshire, 300 homes lost power after lines were brought down in the stormy weather. Environment Secretary Owen Paterson is chairing a meeting of the Government's Cobra emergencies committee, in response to flooding that has wreaked havoc. "We will remain in touch with local councils in at-risk areas," he said. "With a number of flood alerts for the South East, including several areas which have previously been flooded, I urge everyone in affected areas to sign up to EA flood warnings and follow the advice issued."

Sky News weather presenter Nazaneen Ghaffar said: "There is further heavy rain coming in this evening from the west and spreading eastwards. It is going to be quite heavy at times. "It is not anything too unusual for the time of year. It is just that we are having so much rain coming in, in a short space of time, falling on the already saturated ground. "Therefore, we are going to see the risk of further flooding in many areas, and the winds are going to be strong tomorrow with gusts up to 60 to 70mph along exposed western coasts. This could cause some damage as well, some travel disruption is likely too. "It is going to remain stormy for the rest of the week, even into the start of next week as well."

Weather: More Torrential Rain On The Way

Fresh warnings of severe weather and widespread flooding have been issued for the UK, as the Government called an emergency meeting over the conditions. Floods and strong winds have hit households across the country, with roads closed, train services disrupted and hundreds of homes without electricity. Authorities are urging people to be extra vigilant as the country prepares for more vicious weather, severe gales and torrential rain. A 27-year-old man is feared dead after being swept out to sea in Cornwall while celebrating the new year on the beach with friends. That came after a woman died in the surf in north Devon.

The coastguard is also searching for a man who is believed to into the River Stour in Christchurch, Dorset. And emergency services across the country are searching for several people who have not been seen since New Year's Eve. More than 300 weather warnings and alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency, affecting every region of England and Wales. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has also issued several flood warnings, with some 14 throughout Tayside. Dozens of flood warnings have been put in place, mostly in the South East and South West, with strong winds of up to 60 to 70mph, heavy downpours and more flooding forecast over the coming days. Sky News weather presenter Nazaneen Ghaffar said: "There is further heavy rain coming in this evening from the west and spreading eastwards. It is going to be quite heavy at times.

The Government's Cobra emergency committee will meet today after fresh flooding caused more misery for communities.

Power lines were torn down, roads have been closed and homes have been submerged when more heavy rainfall hit the UK yesterday and overnight. Environment Secretary Owen Paterson will chair the Cobra meeting today in an effort to ensure the Environment Agency (EA) and councils are "on the ground and offering all possible support to their communities."

Roads were closed yesterday as the first storms of 2014 brought further misery after torrential rain and gales left homes flooded and thousands without power over Christmas. With further warnings of widespread flooding and more severe weather forecast for tomorrow, Mr Paterson will lead a Cabinet Office Briefing Room meeting in London this morning as agencies plan their response to the problem. He said last night: "We will remain in touch with local councils in at-risk areas. "With a number of flood alerts for the South East for tomorrow, including several areas which have previously been flooded, I urge everyone in affected areas to sign up to EA flood warnings and follow the advice issued."

It comes as emergency services continue to search for people missing in ferocious weather. The body of a 27-year-old man from Surrey has been found after he was swept out to sea near Porthleven in Cornwall while celebrating the new year on the beach with friends. A woman also died in the surf in Croyde, north Devon on New Year's Eve. The coastguard is also searching for a man who is believed to into the River Stour in Christchurch, Dorset. Portland Coastguard led the search near Iford Bridge from 7pm yesterday and a rescue helicopter, inshore lifeboat and the Wick ferry were called to help the emergency services. Jennet Chisholm, Portland Coastguard watch manager, said last night: "All the rescue units are working in very challenging conditions with rain and strong winds, but so far have been unable to find any sign of a missing man."

Visitors to coastal areas have been warned to stay out of the sea, while those inland have been braced for localised flooding. An annual fund-raising swim at Gosport in Hampshire was cancelled yesterday as high winds and heavy rains hit the south coast. Roads have been closed, while around 300 properties in the south and east of England were last night without electricity. UK Power Networks said today its engineers had restored all supplies in the Great Yarmouth area after a large tree was removed from an overhead line. The A36 was closed northbound between the junctions with the A3090 before being reopened this morning and the A27 in Hampshire due to flooding, and is expected to reopen from 6am.

The Environment Agency had this morning issued almost 250 flood alerts and 60 more serious flood warnings, covering almost every region of England and Wales. "The Environment Agency is monitoring the situation closely, working alongside partners including the Met Office and local authorities. Environment Agency teams are out on the ground making sure that flood defences are in good working order, monitoring sea levels and preparing to issue flood alerts and warnings."

Weather forecasters have also predicted strong winds, heavy rain and further flooding in the coming days. There should be a brief respite today, but heavy rain is expected in western areas of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland tomorrow as a low pressure system moves in from the Atlantic. Winds will gust to 50-60mph, the Met Office said, and a combination of lowering pressure and high tides, together with already high levels of ground saturation, bring the risk of flooding.
