Snow Showers Mark Winter's Chilly Arrival

Wintry weather has brought snow to parts of Scotland as temperatures fell across much of the country. There were snowfalls across the Highlands, Grampian and the southern uplands. On Sunday night the mercury dropped to -4C (24.8F) at Aboyne in Aberdeenshire and the coldest place in the UK on Monday was Loch Glascarnoch in Wester Ross, where it was 4C (39.2F). North-westerly winds whipping off the Arctic are expected to bring at least two weeks of near-freezing conditions, making November up to 3C (5.4F) colder than last year.

Any further snow showers are likely to be confined to north Wales and northern Scotland with 5-8cm expected on Wednesday night. Sky News weather producer Joanna Robinson said ice would be a concern in northern and western coastal counties. "Tuesday will be sunny and dry for most, but there will be a few blustery showers around, giving a mix of hail, sleet and snow." Further wintry showers are expected to move south as the week progresses. Forecasters have said they do not expect the plummet in temperatures to cause any disruption and believe the mercury will climb again by next weekend.

UK weather: Gritters out in force as first snow arrives in Scotland

The cold snap has arrived this evening and could cause problems for commuters in the north of England tomorrow morning

The first cold plunge of winter has brought snow to northern parts of Britain and could cause chaos for commuters in the morning. Parts of Scotland have already seen freezing temperatures and wintry showers which are expected to spread further south through the night. Gritters were out in the north of England in anticipation of the cold snap which will  sleet and snow to many parts of the country.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning the north west and northern Wales to expect icy roads and hazardous conditions on Tuesday. Temperatures will drop to below zero across the country and peaking at just 4C (39.2F) or 5C (41F), according to Meteogroup. North-westerly winds whipping off the Arctic are expected to bring at least two weeks of near-freezing conditions, making November up to 3C (5.4F) colder than last year.

A Meteogroup forecaster said: "It does look like much of the UK is in for a cold spell through next week. For at least a week, there will be cold north-westerly winds. "Temperatures through next week will be much lower than recently and generally below the November average. It will struggle to get up to four or five degrees and during the nights temperatures will be below zero quite widely, meaning frost across most places. "There will be some snow but mostly confined to north Wales and northern Scotland - where there will be a few centimetres - and a few wintry showers elsewhere. "On Wednesday night, there will be some fairly heavy snow showers in Scotland, with 5-8cm and some chance of drifting over the hills. Conditions look pretty horrible across northern Scotland."

He added that there was a possibility for snow to move into southern areas as the cold winds move down across the country. He said: "Into the week ahead, it will remain cold but there will probably be dry weather in most areas. At the moment we're not seeing much snow; there may be some but not any significant amount of that would settle. "It will be cold for quite a long prolonged period, certainly through to next week."

Snow and ice hits Britain: Arctic blast set to last for a month

A month-long polar onslaught started last night as snow began falling. Forecasters said that sub-zero temperatures would linger into December and bookies are slashing the odds for it to be the coldest winter on record. Ice and frost are set to cause travel chaos this week as the Baltic blast begins to take hold. Temperatures plunged yesterday as the feared cold snap finally hit, with 70mph winds expected to batter parts of Britain in the coming days. Scotland saw the first snowfall but it will head south this week with parts of the north-east at risk of receiving 10-15cm (4-6in).

Other parts of the north and the Midlands are expected to see between two and five centimetres. Snow and sleet is set to strike in north Wales today with more hitting the Pennines and York Moors tomorrow, according to experts at The Weather Channel. It means the country will be faced with dangerous ice and frost towards the end of the week, prompting bookies to slash odds on this winter becoming the coldest ever. Last night William Hill offered 16-1 that the UK would sink below the record -27.2C before April. The rest of November will be up to 3C colder than this time last year as piercing north-westerly winds whip off the Arctic and crash into Britain. Gritters are hitting the roads and preparing Brits for the freeze as the Met Office also issued a yellow warning for ice.

Shoppers have continued to strip supermarket shelves of essentials. A Meteogroup forecaster warned: “It will be cold for quite a long, prolonged period, certainly through to next week. “It does look like much of the UK is in for a cold spell. “There will be some snow but mostly confined to north Wales and northern Scotland, where there will be a few centimetres, and wintry showers elsewhere.†The weatherman added: “For at least a week there will be cold north-westerly winds.

“Temperatures through next week will be much lower than recently. “It will struggle to get up to four or five degrees and during the nights temperatures will be below zero quite widely, meaning frost across most places. “On Wednesday night, there will be some heavy snow showers in Scotland with 5-8cm and some chance of drifting. “Conditions look pretty horrible across northern Scotland.â€

Hardly.  The Express is denialist territory.  They are ramping this up like cold lovers on the Model thread because they know forecasts of extreme cold produce the following thought process in the uninformed: "Snow and ice?  Then global warming must be socialist nonsense designed to allow our (right wing, but don't expect joined up thinking) government to raise taxes."  Similar to Joe Bastardi's admission that he was ramping up the cold in North America to distract attention from the cyclone.

The Express (and Star) are owned by billionaire Richard Desmond, with whom the buck surely stops?  But it seems he think it's perfectly to fine (and indeed, a jolly ol' jape) to add to his vast mega-fortune by making money out of scaring and worrying little old ladies ...... It seems there is a weather related headline every week in the Express with each one more barmy than the last.

Fact. In the last 37 days The Daily Excess has had a weather related front page headline 15 times. They are beyond a joke now.

Britain to be hit by entirely typical weather

17-10-11

TEMPERATURES in the UK are going to fall sharply over the coming weeks because that is what happens at this time of year, it has been claimed.

During winter snow can often reach the ground

Meteorologists believe that winter, a spell of short, cold days commonly defined as a season, will be more or less exactly what you would expect.

Professor Henry Brubaker of the Institute for Studies said: “Household fuel costs will rise considerably as families try to increase the temperature of their homes.

“People on the verge of death may die.

“Ice and snow will create icy, snowy conditions.

“Your car will refuse to start.

“Because it’s winter.

“It’s really nothing to freak out about, unless you’re a pre-Neanderthal cave dweller who believes sunsets are caused by Gark, the angry moon god.â€

He added: “There’s a high probability that this winter will be followed by another sudden, weather-related phenomenon known as spring.â€

Housewife Nikki Hollis said: “The important thing is to stay inside, carry a flaming torch at all times and don’t be sentimental about eating your plumpest child.â€

First snow falls affect high roads in Wales

Snow falling on high ground in parts of Wales caused traffic problems with some roads blocked or closed. The A4212 was partly blocked between Bala and Trawsfynedd in Gwynedd after four vehicles were abandoned in places. Motorists in Denbighshire and Conwy reported snow lying on the road and hazardous conditions on the A5 between Corwen and Pentrefoelas. In Rhondda Cynon Taf, the Rhigos mountain road was closed for a while between Hirwaun and Treherbert.

South Wales Police said there had been a number of accidents during the morning rush hour. Elsewhere, snow and ice have been causing problems for commuters in the north east of Scotland and Northern Isles, with several accidents reported.

Freezing weather hits Britain

Temperatures to fall as low as -4C as piercing high winds, rain and snow sweep country from north to south

Wintry weather will grip the UK as plunging temperatures bring icy blasts and snow showers to many parts, forecasters have predicted. Strong winds with gusts of 70mph will batter northern parts of England and higher ground in Scotland could be blanketed in up to 5cm (2in) of snow. Large parts of England are predicted to drop to as low as -4C on Wednesday because of cold winds from the north.

Motorists are being warned that snow and rain may turn to ice on roads as clear conditions bring freezing temperatures. The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for most of Scotland and northern England for wind and ice. "The north or north-westerly winds will increase during the early hours of Wednesday, with gusts perhaps reaching 60-70mph in places. "The public should be aware that the winds are likely to be strong enough to cause some local disruption to travel and possibly some minor damage to buildings and trees."

Alexi Boothman, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said temperatures were markedly lower than the average for this time of year. Maximum temperatures in England and Wales were around 6-7C on Tuesday, below the average of 10-11C. Only Scotland is likely to see any substantial settling snow. Boothman said: "There is potential for getting quite a lot of snow where the ski resorts are but generally we are looking at wintry showers rather than heavy snow coming through.

"On high ground and mountains and hills like the Cairngorms we are looking at the potential for 3-4cm, possibly even 5cm of snow. "There will be really quite strong winds in the north, with wintry showers across central and northern England, turning into rain. "We are looking at wintry, breezy conditions that are not very nice, but snow is unlikely to settle in England and conditions by the end of the week will be drier with lighter winds."

French television viewers may get a bit more than they bargained for after Doria Tillier vowed to present the weather forecast NAKED if France qualified for the World Cup. With France 2-0 down after the first leg of their play-off against Ukraine, Tillier promised to take her clothes off if Les Bleus recovered to qualify for next year's Finals in Brazil. And ratings are expected to go through the roof on Canal+ as people tune in to see if Tillier fulfills her promise after Didier Deschamps' side beat Ukraine 3-0 at Stade de France

Snow flurries in the North East are a taste of things to come

Forecasters are warning that more snow is on the way after the North East awoke to its first major snow of winter. With still more than a month to go until the solstice and the official start of the season, large parts of the region received a dusting of white. Though that could not deter locals from taking a walk – or even their morning exercise – as the snow turned the village of Longframlington into a picture postcard. A spokesman for the Met Office said that today the North East will experience bright or sunny spells but with further rain, sleet or snow showers likely. It’ll feel cold with a brisk north west breeze, and the maximum temperature will be just 7C (44F). The outlook for Thursday to Saturday is pretty similar with sunshine and showers, and the showers sometimes becoming wintry over higher ground. The highest chance of snow is probably tomorrow and then showers will become more isolated by Saturday, though the weather will continue to be often breezy with overnight frosts.

Here we go, we are now in for 12" of snow this week, a bit up from the 4" headline this time last week - both from the Expresses Nathan Rao. Read the article and see what you think, but at this rate, in a couple of weeks the UK will be completely buried.....

‘Screaming’ gales blast in as 12 INCHES of snow set to fall in Britain this week

WINTER 2013 is about to tighten its grip as long-range weather forecasters warn 12 inches of snow will hit Britain this week

The mercury is set to plunge  below freezing around the UK as 70mph Arctic gales rip into exposed regions bringing heavy snow.It comes as long-range forecasters warn winter 2013 into January 2014 could deliver the most severe weather for more than 60 years. Heavy snow is set to cripple parts of the UK while temperatures threaten to hover below-average for until the beginning of spring.

The latest detailed forecasts for winter 2013 all point towards months of relentless extreme cold with heavy snow ‘extremely likely’ across the country.Experts in long-range weather forecasting said the whole of Britain should be prepared for this winter to be the most severe since 1947, which saw the UK hit by relentless snow and some of the lowest temperatures on record. It comes as Britain battens down the hatches for a particularly sever bout of winter weather. Government forecasters have extended severe weather warnings for ice across virtually the entire northern half of the country.

The Met Office also warned numbing Arctic gusts in the north-west could be strong enough to cause structural damage and travel disruption. Spokeswoman Nicky Maxey said temperatures will remain well-below average for the time of year at least until the weekend, She said: “We have a cold front moving from the North southwards through Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures are a few degrees below average for the time of year. “Gale-force gusts from the Arctic region of up to 70mph will make it feel even colder, and we are expecting wintry showers over high ground. “There is going to be heavy rain in the South, including London, which may turn wintry over high ground into Thursday. “Towards the end of the week it is going to be drier and brighter, though still very cold, in some places it won’t get much above freezing.â€

The Arctic plunge, a colossal mass of air sweeping in from the North Pole, delivered it’s first bite this week with heavy snow grinding parts of the country to a halt.  Forecasters warned the full force of the Arctic blast is yet to hit with heavy snow, widespread frosts and “screaming†Arctic gales due over the next 48 hours.Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said the extreme cold weather threatens to bed in until the end of the year.He said the mercury will struggle to get above freezing across the UK this week with bitter winds making it feel more like -11C [12F] in the North and -5C [23F] elsewhere. He said: “It is going to be bone-numbingly cold for quite some time now, with no real change into and through next month.

“Wednesday and Thursday will see bitter Arctic gales  batter exposed regions with more snow on the cards for many places. “This will mainly fall over high ground but we can’t rule out rain turning wintry across lower parts. “Most of the country is now looking at a stubborn spell of extremely cold winter weather to bring misery for weeks.†James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, said: “The cold and wintry theme will continue throughout the remainder of November, with the risk of further snow events during next week. “The cold and wintry conditions will also prevail throughout much of December, before progressively worsening in January and February.â€

Leon Brown, forecaster for The Weather Channel, said several inches of snow is expected over high ground of Scotland and the North. He said up to 12 inches could fall in Northeast Scotland with including over the Grampians and Cairngorms mountains. He said: “The largest snowfalls will be in northeast Scotland and especially the Grampians and Cairngorms with 20 to 30cm [12 inches] over the tops ready to help get the ski season started.  â€œCold northeasterly winds will end the week and continue over the south-east at the weekend when it will be mainly dry apart from a few light wintry showers “Temperatures may drop out sharply overnight in central Scotland with minus 8 to minus 10C [14F] possible where there is lying snow around the Cairngorms.

Netweather said by Thursday there will be a risk of wintry showers as far south as London and Kent as rain turns to sleet and snow. Forecaster Jo Farrow added: “Wednesday night into Thursday will see a screaming northerly wind for the western half of the UK, and relatively light winds over eastern Britain, where temperatures will fall close to freezing.“On Thursday there will be a flow off the North Sea, bringing cloud and damp weather, with a wintry mix. “So eastern Britain could see some snow showers, especially over the hills.â€

The only undramatic, reasoned, composed (and as it happens, correct so far) part of the article appears to be the last paragraph that I highlighted, what a surprise!

Health risk to millions as Arctic plunge hits Britain

MILLIONS of Britons are not prepared for severe winter weather with many at risk as the Arctic snap hits, experts warned last night. The British Red Cross said just half of people believe they have neighbours or nearby friends whom they could rely on for help. And the charity called for Good Samaritans to aid those most in need. It follows warnings that plunging temperatures could lead to a crisis on overstretched hospital wards. Experts say 25,000 elderly people die every year from the cold – with fears this year’s toll could be even higher. Simon Lewis, head of British Red Cross emergency response, said: “With only 41 per cent of people saying they would know which neighbour would most need help in an emergency, it is vital that we take time to support those around us.

Panic buyers were out in force for some reason yesterday

Britain's big chill sparks huge panic buys

PANIC buyers hit supermarket shelves yesterday after parts of Britain woke to snow amid warnings of one of the worst-ever starts to winter. Thousands rushed to buy grit, de-icer and ice-scrapers amid fears the country will be plunged into travel chaos by some of the fiercest blizzards in 60 years. Asda expects to sell 500 tonnes of grit and 500,000 cans of de-icer this week. Spokesman Chris Carden said: “With the UK plummeting into a freezing winter earlier than expected, people are making sure they are ready for the big chill.†Sales of roasting joints, onesies and mulled wine also soared by up to 60% as families batten down.

Winter duvets, blankets and hot water bottles have also doubled in popularity this week. Sub-zero temperatures, snowfall and icy 70mph winds are forecast to make Britain colder than Iceland this weekend. Snow, sleet and showers will stretch from Scotland down to the West Midlands as icy Arctic winds force the mercury as low as -3C. Meanwhile bookmakers Paddy Power are offering odds-on that Britain will get the coldest winter on record.

Unsurprisingly non of the models show icy 70mph winds or snowfall this weekend only subzero temps are at night, once again the media are not reporting whats likely to happen

This constant OTT description of an Armageddon Winter scenario in the written press over the last 2/3 weeks is starting to get very tedious as it is clearly turning out to be totally incorrect at the moment. I'm sure they are aiming this at a different sector to the 'enthusiasts' here, but if they keep peddling the dramatic, doom-mongering articles drawing reference to 12" of snow this week etc etc, after the initial and inevitable panic response from the general public, most will just ignore the constant spewing out of superlatives about the 'worst ever Winter'.

When the real cold and snowy weather finally gets here, people will treat those articles like the boy that cried Wolf and may not be as well prepared for Winter as some should be. I wish they would find some balance about all this and consider the readership, not the sales figures for once.
