I think after October's headlines, people will go out and buy sun cream and beach towels instead.

The Mirror say:

UK set for snow as temperatures plummet to -8C

After an unseasonably warm winter, the UK will feel the chill later this week as temperatures are set to plummet and some areas will be hit by snow. Snow was falling over high ground in Wales, northern parts of England and Scotland today but was not expected to settle, while wintry showers and hail are expected to be widespread tomorrow.

A spokeswoman for the Met Office said there was a chance of snow across the country by early next week. An Atlantic weather system is trying to push in from the west and would be coming up against cold weather in the east over the next few days "There is a degree of uncertainity about what it will bring in the early part of next week, but it looks like there is a good chance of snow," she said. She added: "Temperatures will fall to below freezing tonight so motorists will need to watch out as roads are likely to be icy tomorrow. "We expect there will be snow over the hills of north west and northern England and Scotland. "Temperatures are only expected to be slightly lower than they have been, in England they will be around 7-8C and 5-6C further north, but will be much colder by Saturday - down to -2C or -3C in the south and -3C to -4C in the north and Scotland."Colder weather will continue but there is uncertainity about where the frontal system will go."

The Met Office has issued its yellow "be aware" warning for much of Scotland and Northern Ireland for today and tomorrow. Nick Prebble, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said hail would hit much of the country tomorrow. He said: "Tomorrow will feel a lot different to recent days, the main thing about it is there are going to be a lot of wintery showers all over the country. "There may be snow flurries in higher areas but hail elsewhere. "It will be quite a bright day though overall with quite a few sunny spells, around 8C in London." He added that sleet and snow could be expected in eastern areas by Monday.

Met Office issues ice warning as weather front moves in

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning to motorists due to fears over icy conditions brought on by a sudden drop in temperatures.

Widespread wintery showers are expected to blast parts of Britain today as the country braces itself for a spell of cooler weather that could bring snow to some regions. While the past few weeks have seen unseasonably mild weather across the country, temperatures are set to plummet to -6C in some areas this weekend. Experts say there is also the potential for snow by Monday as a warm Atlantic weather system from the west clashes with cold air over Europe in the east.

The Met Office said motorists travelling on untreated roads in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and northern England should be wary of potential ice patches. Issuing its "yellow†graded warning - meaning be aware - it said: "Icy stretches are expected to form on untreated surfaces, especially in places affected by showers. "The showers will fall as snow above about 250 metres, but there may be temporary slush deposits to lower levels. The public should be aware of possible travel disruption."

In 2010, many businesses and public services ground to a halt following heavy snowfall across the UK in the build up to Christmas. Clothing retailer Next estimated that their stores “lost £22m of full price sales as a result of the snow†while The Federation of Small Businesses said overall the cold snap cost the British economy £1.2 billion a day. Alastair Kight, managing director of GRITIT, a leading gritting firm, today warned that businesses needed to take steps to protect employees and visitors from icy conditions. He said: “The law places responsibility on employers and owners or occupiers that their premises are maintained in a condition that is safe and without risk of injury. Anything hazardous that can be removed, such as snow and ice, must be removed. “If not, not only will they be at risk of injury claims, which take time and money to process, but their insurance may be compromised if they cannot prove they used their best endeavours to maintain their premises in a risk-free state.â€

Lindsay Dovey, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, said temperatures were expected to drop to between -1C and -5C in the north overnight, with a southerly low of -1C. During Saturday and Sunday temperatures are expected to range between 4C-7C across Britain with lows of -1C during the night, she added. She said: "Today will see sunny spells and wintry showers which are going to be pretty heavy falling as sleet and hail. "The showers will progress down from the north throughout the day and there could be the odd lightning strikes and snow on high ground in those showers. "Overnight they will continue over the southern parts of the UK then on Saturday morning a front coming in from the west will start move in and spread eastwards bringing in some rain. "This could meet a band of cold air and then turn to snow."

WINTER IS HERE... FOUR-WEEK SIBERIAN FREEZE TO GRIP UK

THE first big freeze of the winter could last for up to four weeks, weathermen warned last night.

Snow is expected to hit parts of the North today with the whole country set to shiver over the next few days as temperatures plunge below zero.

The cold spell, which comes at the end of one of the mildest winters on record, is the result of a blast of icy air from Siberia.

Forecasters say the UK will be “put in the freezer†with weeks of snow, ice and freezing temperatures set to cause chaos on the roads.

Forecaster Brian Gaze, of The Weather Outlook, said: “This has been a very mild winter so far but that should change as high pressure to the North and East blocks mild Atlantic weather and pushes bitterly cold air westwards from Siberia.

“The cold block to our east shifting a few hundred miles west is the difference between Britain being in the freezer or the recent run of mild south-westerly winds.â€This week has already seen the first real taste of winter with sub-zero temperatures and snow bringing parts of the UK to a standstill. Up to four inches fell on higher ground in northern England and Scotland, with Wales and even Devon on alert.

Eastern parts of the country are expected to be worst hit by the coming cold snap with councils warned to have gritters on standby. Last year Britain ground to a halt as one of the coldest winters on record caused transport chaos. Parts of the country were buried under up to a foot of snow for days as temperatures plunged to -20C.

But a spokesman for the Local Government Association said yesterday: “Councils are better prepared this winter than they have ever been. Town halls have stockpiled 1.4 million tons of grit, more than was used throughout all of last winter. “They have also invested in dozens of new gritters, thousands of extra salt bins and better communications to keep residents informed.â€

Just thought I'd say I'm liking the google logo today - showing a big snowflake symbol and a snowy scene - must have been given a big tip off, either that or it is merely resembling the fact it is mid winter still.

Just watched the weather on News24. Tobyn only talked about the next 24-48hrs and never mentioned the weather at all beyond Monday, not even in general terms. Either this was simply remiss of her, or they have no

confidence in the cold/very cold set up developing. Of course she could have simply ran out of time, but how long does it take to either say, or put up a graphic to protray a very cold week? Much as they did throughout yesterday.

I will watch it Sam, but if they mentioned throughout yesterday and even during much of Friday to be honest, so to drop it this morning (or perhaps not even mention would be a better term) does seem a bit odd.

Many of the News 24 forecasts are repeats with some of these are shorter forecasts than others. I watched a forecast around midnight last night and it was Laura so i doubt she will do live broadcasts throughout the night. Most probably records them and has a kip!

Level 2 alert as the big freeze hits Britain

Health chiefs issued a warning to old people yesterday as a freeze from Siberia threatened to bring the worst weather of the winter so far. While this lone cyclist braved the snow to cycle along the Pennines near Skipton, North Yorks, health authorities issued a Level 2 alert to warn the elderly to take extra care and the public were told to expect traffic disruption.

The Met Office predicted snow for large areas of the country for the next few days with temperatures expected to plummet to as low as -7C at night in Manchester and Scotland. Snow is expected to hit Wales and the South West of England today, moving north as far as Lancashire and Cumbria tomorrow as two weather fronts collide over Britain. A spokesman said: “It makes it very difficult to predict precisely what will happen, but from today it will get colder. There is a 70 per cent chance of severe cold weather between now and Wednesday.†The east of the country may escape the snow but it will be noticeably colder, with a low of minus five in London.

The big freeze claimed its first victim yesterday after a woman died when her car skidded down an embankment in icy conditions near Torpoint, Cornwall.

Latest forecasts say tonight will remain mainly dry overnight, with light winds and clear spells allowing a widespread frost and some patches of freezing fog to form. Far northern and western areas will be cloudier and a little milder however, with spells of mostly light rain. Sunday is expected to be cloudy with some rain in western parts, with snow over hills in Wales and southwestern England later. Otherwise mainly fine after any fog clears, although showery in the far east.

On Monday a slow-moving band of rain with hill snow in western parts will continue on Monday, before cold, and bright conditions with isolated showers push westwards towards midweek. Over the next couple of weeks, the weather is forecast to be mostly settled and cold leading up to the first weekend, especially towards the southeast of England, with widespread overnight frost and some wintry coastal showers towards the east. However, northwestern parts will soon become cloudier, more unsettled, but milder with spells of rain and some snow, the snow mainly on hills.

Although there is considerable uncertainty, the bright, cold conditions will probably continue for a time into the second week in the east. The unsettled but milder conditions in the west will probably spread erratically further east with time, introducing spells of rain and some snow, again mainly on hills. This progression may be coupled with strong winds and possibly gales in northwestern parts. The cold spell breaks what has so far been one of the warmest winters on record.

The snow is triggered by a warm Atlantic weather system from the west clashing with cold air in the east. Forecasters said it was becoming increasingly likely that the freezing temperatures would stick around and even last through the whole of February.

George Goodfellow of the Met Office said: ‘It seems like we are edging toward a scenario where lower temperatures last for the next four weeks. It is going to be a contrast to the weather we have had this winter. Widespread frosts and snow could affect large areas.’

He said the wintry weather was a result of ‘a cold air mass moving across from Siberia’.

There are fears that the sudden onset could bring travel chaos and catch many drivers off guard.

AA spokesman Luke Bodett said: ‘We have had a very mild winter so far and motorists need to get into their winter mindset from today. It is going to be important not to charge around in the way they may have been used to and be prepared for the unexpected.’

The Met Office has briefed government departments and local councils about the cold period so that extreme weather plans can be put on standby.

Country tracks forecast much as expected really. Mostly dry, cold, widespread overnight frost and out until Friday at least, limited snow.
