SHIVERING HALT TO MILD DAYS

BLIZZARDS and sub-zero temperatures will bring a shivering end to the recent mild weather as winter roars in with a vengeance next week.

The first real signs of widespread winter chill are due to arrive tomorrow with temperatures falling below freezing overnight into Monday.

HERE WE SNOW!

SNOW has brought a chilly end to one of Britain’s mildest ever autumns. A 30-minute blizzard hit the north-east as temperatures plunged to -2C yesterday.

One motorist had a lucky escape after his Vauxhall Corsa flipped on to its roof on icy roads in Hartlepool, Teesside, at 8am. Thick snow then hit the South Tyne Valley. Met Office spokesman Helen Chivers said: “We are now getting winds coming from the west which will bring rain and gales over the next few days.

“The early part of next week will be colder, with frosts, and there could be snow over lower parts of Scotland.â€

But chances of a white Christmas are slim as the mild weather is due to return later this month.

Snow joke: Swiss ski resorts hit by drought

The traditional start of Switzerland's ski season has been marred by a shortage of snow across the Alps.

The autumn has been the driest on record in the country.

Correspondents say the continuing drought is bad news for the country's tourism industry which is already suffering from the strong Swiss franc.

Big resorts such as Davos or St Moritz have been able to open a few runs with the help of snow cannons. Others have delayed the start of the season.

The franc has risen sharply this year against the euro, the dollar and the British pound, making a skiing holiday in Switzerland far more expensive than in France, Italy or Austria.

Snow set to hit Britain

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for Strathclyde, the Highlands, western isles, Tayside, Fife and central Scotland. They warn of increasingly wintry showers throughout this afternoon into tomorrow.

Up to 15cm of snow could fall on high ground, with 1-3cm of snow on low level inland areas, while ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces, the Met Office website said.

Parts of England and Wales are also likely to see wintry weather with snow forecast on high ground in north Wales and northern England.

Transport Scotland has activated a full Multi Agency Response Team (MART) involving all of its transport partners including rail, road and Strathclyde Police which will convene at Traffic Scotland's Control Room this afternoon.

BRRRITAIN BRACING ITSELF FOR A WHITE CHRISTMAS

A WHITE Christmas is on the cards for much of Britain as the first of the major winter snows began to hit the country yesterday.

Forecasters predict large parts of the UK will be blanketed in white over the holiday season in a repeat of last year’s festive snowfall.

The North of Britain will have most of the Christmas snow with the South possibly suffering a wet rather than a white Christmas, with damp, windy conditions.

Yesterday snow ploughs battled to clear roads in the North of England, with the A66 between Brough and Scotch Corner in North Yorkshire just passable with care.

Driver killed as snow hits Britain

A lorry driver died today after his vehicle left a trunk road in severe wintry conditions.

The incident on the A160 in north Lincolnshire happened as police across the north of England and Scotland warned motorists to take extra care due to sleet and snow.

Humberside Police said the white Scania lorry, which was fully loaded with meat, left the westbound carriageway of the road in South Killingholme at about 4.14am.

A spokeswoman said road conditions in the area were quite poor at the time due to cold weather and hailstones.

The driver has not been named but is believed to be from the north west of England. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for most of Scotland as well as Northern Ireland and parts of northern England.

Three inches of snow hits the North

SNOW will hit many parts of Britain today, after three inches fell in some areas yesterday.

More is predicted on high ground in northern England and North Wales as a band of freezing weather crosses the country.

Up to six inches is predicted in Scotland.

Snow ploughs were out on major roads in County Durham and Northumberland yesterday.

The A66 in Cumbria was just passable with care while drivers had to dig their cars out in Alston, high up in the Pennines.

Temperatures plummeted across the country, while a widespread frost saw people having to scrape their windscreens before making the perilous journey to work.

MET OFFICE ISSUES SEVERE WEATHER ALERT AS HEAVY SNOW SPREADS

BRITAIN was caught in the icy grip of winter yesterday with the coldest temperatures so far and snow blizzards bringing chaos to roads.

A lorry driver died in the early hours when his vehicle left a trunk road on the A160 in north Lincolnshire.

Humberside Police said the lorry, which was loaded with meat, left the westbound carriageway in South Killingholme.

And the cold blast and treacherous driving conditions are set to spread, with warnings that the weekend could even see snow as far south as London.

Jonathan Powell, senior forecaster for Positive Weather Solutions, said: “A break in the snow on Thursday will give way to gales of up to 65mph in the North before more cold weather on Friday.â€

He added: “After a lull on Thursday the snow is set to return with a bang on Friday and will start to move South and South-east. There is a possibility of snow as far south as London.â€

Long-range forecasters have already said that a white Christmas is on the cards for large parts of the UK.

BRITAIN was braced for the first real bite of winter last night as plummeting temperatures began to take their toll.

Experts warned that after a brief respite tomorrow and Thursday many parts of Britain will be plunged into the deep freeze, with the mercury falling to a bone-chilling -6C. A Met Office spokesman said: “We’ll all need to wrap up warm this week.

“Temperatures are going to drop dramatically by Friday as colder air moves down from the north polar regions.†But he added that most places would stay clear of snow, apart from Scotland and areas of high ground in the North.

Garden centres reported a rush for snow shovels and rock salt – and Ladbrokes slashed the oddson a white Christmas from 6/1 to just 3/1.

Hundreds of schools are closed in Scotland today as Britain is battered by winds of up to 100mph. Snow is expected as far south as Birmingham as Arctic conditions sweep in across the country. London will experience gusts of up to 55mph, forecasters said. Today the Scottish Government advised schools to stay closed and said the travel warning was 'unprecedented for high wind'. Motorists north of the border were told to 'exercise extreme caution' and check conditions before travelling. The Forth Bridge is expected to close after 3pm as a precaution.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon today warned that the country will be hit by gales which are worse than they have seen for 'many years'. She said: 'The very latest information from the Met Office's chief forecaster shows that we can expect very severe gales, at wind speeds not seen for many years, across large parts of western, central and southern Scotland throughout Thursday. 'On the basis of the earlier red warning from the Met Office, some councils had already taken the precaution of closing schools early to make sure that parents can safely collect children before the most dangerous weather and travel conditions arrive. In light of the latest forecast, and in particular the timings which suggest the severe weather affecting the west-central part of the country earlier than originally anticipated, some of these closure timings may have to change. However, this morning she told the BBC that individual headteachers should decide for themselves whether to open today. Eight local authorities closed all their schools early this morning, while at least six more said schools would shut at lunchtime.

All classes at Glasgow and Strathclyde universities were cancelled, affecting thousands of students. East Ayrshire, East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire councils also said all their schools were closed. The Met Office issued its strongest warning – a red alert – for winds in Scotland and warned parts of England and Wales to 'be aware'. Guidance related to red alerts suggests 'widespread structural damage' is likely. Roofs could be blown off, mobile homes overturned and power lines brought down. Forecasters also predict 'widespread transport disruption' due to roads blocked by fallen trees. Northern Ireland and Scotland will experience the highest winds, but other parts of the UK are likely to face gusts of up to 60mph and heavy bursts of rain. Across England, the Government issued its first winter health alert, telling hospitals to prepare to be busier than usual. A deepening Atlantic low pressure system is bringing winds ranked at the maximum force of 12 on the Beaufort scale, with gusts expected to blow vehicles sideways and cause bridge closures.

The storm is also sucking Arctic winds south, bringing up to four inches of snow from tomorrow across western England as far south as Birmingham, with up to a foot on the Scottish hills. Alison Richards of the Met Office said: 'We do not issue red warnings lightly. That is why people need to take heed of it and take appropriate action.' Southern and central Scotland are covered by the red alert for winds of up to 100mph for 24 hours from this morning. Northern England and the rest of Scotland are on amber alert for 60mph winds, and a yellow alert – meaning 'be aware' – has been issued for the Midlands and north Wales.

From tomorrow, blizzards, snowdrifts and black ice on roads and pavements are also expected, with wind and rain making it feel much colder across the UK. Met Office forecaster Dan Williams said: ‘From this evening there is a snow risk as far south as Birmingham – the furthest south that snow has been forecast this winter. 'As the storm passes tomorrow, the back side of it brings cold polar air and the snow risk, which is now through Friday as well as Saturday. 'We have issued a level two [yellow] alert in conjunction with the Department of Health to let vulnerable people know about the cold weather and so health services can get their resources ready. 'We will monitor how the situation develops and, if it pans out as predicted, the alert could be upgraded to level three [amber]. 'Saturday will have a frosty start with patchy road ice and wintry showers in the north. 'The south and east will be drier, albeit cold, with wintry showers on hills in Scotland on Sunday and more very changeable weather to come.'

This time last year, swathes of the country was already covered in thick snow, causing hundreds of schools to be closed, flights delayed and widespread chaos on the roads – and forecasters are now warning of a potential repeat as conditions will only get worse as the week goes on. Police across the north of England and Scotland are warning motorists to take extra care. Night temperatures will fall to sub-zero across many parts by tomorrow night, bringing the risk of black ice on Saturday

One thing that worried me in the TV media today by BBC and ITV is the excessive term of the 165(or so)MPH gust that was recorded in what I assume was probably in the highest point in the highlands. This is mis-leading because Scotland generally was certainly not battered by 165MPH winds today so when you see it on the ticker or being said by the presenters it really does grate on me.

No doubt newspapers will record this figure in there editions to make it look more dramatic.
