The aemet site doesn't mention it but it appears that the 45.9 in Seville is a new record for August beating previous record of 45.2 from 01/08/2003.

Wunderground has a good round up of the heat on 10-11th of this month -

SPAIN (AUGUST 10-11)

The Madrid Royal Observatory in Retiro Park recorded its hottest temperature on record with a 40.6°C (105.1°F) reading on August 10th. Records here go back to 1860 (the Madrid Airport location has measured hotter temperatures before with 42.2°C/108°F in August 2003). Elsewhere in Spain all-time records on August 10 and 11 were achieved at:

Cordoba with 46.3°C/115.3°F (downtown location)

Alcoi with 44.1°C/111.4°F

Toledo with 43.1°C/109.6°F

Vitoria (Basque region) with 42.4°C/108.3°F

Pamplona with 41.4°C/106.5°F

Salamanca with 40.9°C/105.6°F

The hottest location of all in Spain was Mengibar, Jaen Province with 47.1°C (116.8°F), a location about 55 miles east of Cordoba). This was just 0.1°C (about 0.2°F) short of the possible Spanish national record of 47.2°C (117.0°F) set at Murcia on July 4, 1994. However, the Spanish heat record is open to debate. A possibly reliable figure of 50°C/122°F was reported from Berja on July 18, 1978. Many sources also claim that Seville also reached 50°C/122° on August 4, 1881. During the recent event Seville recorded 45.9°C/114.6°F.

There is more about the continued heat across the rest of Europe

Was surprised to see austerity protesters in Madrid wearing jumpers and jackets, but after weekend temperatures around 30°C, and parts of Valencia reaching up to 37.2°C on Sunday 23/09, the first early signs of Autumn as the Madrid maximum temperature yesterday was below 20°C for the first time since May 21st.

Ten people have been killed in flash floods in southern Spain and a British woman is missing, while dozens were hurt as a tornado ripped through a fairground. A 52-year-old British woman is among those missing after torrential rain hit the Andalusia and Murcia regions, and hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes.

The hardest hit provinces are Malaga in the south and Almeria in the southeast. Among the dead are seven men, two women and a 10-year-old girl who was found drowned in a car. Britain's Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it was investigating reports that the unnamed British woman has gone missing in Almeria. In the region of Valencia, 35 people were reportedly injured after a tornado hit a fairground and flattened a Ferris wheel.

Local media said all the injured were fairground workers and 15 were seriously hurt. The twister damaged several other rides and cut electricity in the temporary fairground set up in the town of Gandia. The funfair was closed to the public at the time because of a thunderstorm, reports said.

On the beach at El Saler, near Valenica, two cargo ships have run ashore and the ports of Valencia and Sagunto were temporarily closed on Saturday. The flooding has also disrupted high-speed train services between Madrid and Valencia and various regional lines, while some bridges and roads have been made impassible.

Around 500 people have been moved from their homes, although some evacuees have begun to return home to clear up the mess with the help of local authority workers. Forecasters say the heavy rain, which started on Friday morning, is moving east and will eventually head northwards toward Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. The deluge comes after months of virtual drought and soaring summer temperatures all over Spain that triggered thousands of wildfires.

After the soakings in Andalucia over recent weeks, the past few days has seen a fairly strong extratropical storm bring tropical storm-like conditions to the western Canary isles.

According to figures from Aemet, at La Palma airport there has been approximately 10 inches (253mm) of rain in the past week, with over 9 of this in four days. This compared to the 1971-2000 October and November averages of 37 and 53mm respectively and an annual average of 324mm.

Similar figures are found across the island and at higher elevations inland there has been over 14 inches at El Paso (844m). The high ground of El Hierro has also had over 10 inches with 10.35 inches in just 3 days at Valverde (1070m).

It has also been windy at times, with La Palma airport recording an hourly mean of 94km/h (58mph) gusting to 135km/h (83.9mph) on 30/10 with the rugged terrain giving gusts over 70mph quite widely on La Palma and parts of Gran Canaria, and Tenerife. Here the high altitude observatory at Izana (2371m) recorded almost 89mph on 31/10, but a long way short of their record 154mph.

Widespread night time air frosts across the bulk of mainland Spain next week.

Ground frosts enveloping North Africa too, with the increasing risk of an air frost!
