March CET

With only a week to go it is time to start the March CET topic.

Along with January and February, March has also often been very mild throughout the last 22 years. Last year was about average at 6.1*C, 2009 was quite warm at 7.0*C, 2008 was also about average too. The last colder than average March was 2006, and before that in 2001 and 1996.

So, what will March bring this year? February looks set to be a very mild month with a CET likely to be close to 6.5*C, and in the last two decades mild Februarys have often been followed by mild Marches, although just one exception was 1995, when March was actually colder than the very mild February that year.

A colder than average march ( recent times)

1996

2001

2006

And the next number in that sequence should be.... 2011 ( just for fun?)

That's wrong.

2010 6.1c (-0.2c)

2008 6.1c (-0.2c)

Since 1995, 6 have been below average.

I'm going for 6.4C for now- a warm start but cold interludes mid to late month.

I see quite a few conflicting signals at the moment. I can see a signal for very cold weather, but also warm weather. Based on the warm weather winning out during February and a +QBO leading to a late breakdown of the Polar Vortex, i will call for 1.5C above average at this stage.

I will update on the 28th.

What is the 1981-2010 average for March???

No, I mean by 1961-90 standards. There have been only three Marches since 1987 below the 61-90 mean, 1996, 2001 and 2006. Last year and 2008 were both above the 61-90 mean but below the 1971-2000 mean., so in between these sets of averages.

Looking at some early data and trends, i believe that the UK will be shrouded in circa -5 850's for the first half followed by a high pressure loitering around ireland, giving fairly high maxes, but decent mins.

3.8oc for me, top 60 CET finish.....although i will prob update this as data gets more reliable towards the end of feb.

We don't use the 61-90 average...

81-2010 average is 6.6c

Based on the updated average being 6.6C, my prediction for now is 8.1C, 1.5C above average.

5.6ºC - cold second half that will annoy more people than it will delight others.
