There is no other description for what is happening other than war crime and genocide.   Israel is technically the occupying force on Gaza and as such is duty bound to protect civilians.   Complet

The scenes in Gaza look like the aftermath of a nuclear bomb, utter devastation. The Israelis telling people to go back to their homes in northern Gaza as its "safe", what are they supposed to go back

Reported on the BBC too... An air strike on an army camp has killed three soldiers, the Syrian government says, blaming the US-led coalition for the attack. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-

Even more shocking is it happand in august!

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3307741/Rocket-attack-UK-tour-jet.html

A British plane carrying 189 passengers came ‘within 1,000ft’ of a rocket as it approached Sharm El Sheikh, it emerged last night.

The Thomson flight from London Stansted only took evasive action after the pilot spotted the missile speeding through the air.

The jet landed safely, and holidaymakers were not told they had been seconds from disaster.

The Department for Transport confirmed the incident took place on August 23 – just two months before a Metrojet plane crashed in central Sinai, killing all 224 on board.

'UK letting down allies over Syria stance' is being covered on BBC, SKY, and ITV.   The same headline is in most popular UK tabloids,  even in the Conservative supporting P&J, serving northern Scotland.   Some foreign allied countries are also carrying the same story.  In what is obviously an organised, timed release, suggests they are really going for it?

'UK letting down allies over Syria stance' is being covered on BBC, SKY, and ITV.   The same headline is in most popular UK tabloids,  even in the Conservative supporting P&J, serving northern Scotland.   Some foreign allied countries are also carrying the same story.  In what is obviously an organised, timed release, suggests they are really going for it?

Well, the UK, like other European countries and the USA, want the Qatar/Saudi-Syria-Europe gas pipeline (Sunni Muslim option) instead of the Russian backed Iran-Iraq-Syria-Europe (Shia option with a Shia Iraq government) one.

The first would reduce dependency on Russian gas as a priority; the second also, but with the uncomfortable caveat that the Russian and Iranian governments are more allied. Hence the Russians backed the Iran option for price controlling.

The Syrian war of course really kicked off when Assad opted for the Iran option.

The original hope of the west was that Assad went for the Qatar-Saudi option. When he looked to be going for Iran, so the 'arab spring' came to Syria; the western plan being that Assad be replaced by a new government which would agree to the Qatar-Saudi gas pipeline. Hence Dave was so keen to get the vote for bombing Assad through; really through a spanner in the works when this didn't pass.

As for ISIS; they seem to have turned out to be much less controllable than the Saudi's thought. Add in the refugee crisis and the west has got cold feet on this Saudi/Sunni approach to destabilise Iraq (so blocking the Iran pipeline option in favour of the Qatar one).

I wonder if the Russians, once they've shored up Assad, will try to push ISIS into Saudi. Will give the Saudi's a taste of their own medicine and could cause a huge spike in oil prices which Russia dearly needs.

But then if the EU and the US attack ISIS...

Complicated to say the least, but as usual, all about oil & gas.

    iran-iraq-syria-pipeline.jpg

    EDIT

Incidentally, the bulk of the gas would initially come from the same field. In Qatar, it is the giant North Field. On the other side of the border, in Iran, it's called South Pars.

Sharm flights suspended hopefully resuming Friday. Hammond displayed a slight misunderstanding how groups affiliated to ISIS work during his interview suggesting direct control which there isn't.

I'm slightly puzzled as to how you can be quite so definitive about this. IS is like an octopus with it's body in Syria/Iraq and tentacles in Somalia, Yemen, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Mali to name but a few. As I understand it the leaders of the groups in these countries reach a personal understanding with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and his lieutenants and become affiliates of IS. Now there is nothing to stop local factions working on there own but I would have thought something of this magnitude would almost certainly have involved the main branch.

It has also put Putin in a bit of a cleft stick. As Kiwi has already mentioned he now can't really be seen to ignore IS in Syria so may need to redirect his attacks away from the Free Syrian Army and the other rebel factions towards IS. Something he has been loath to do as Russia faces greater risk from Jihadists than we do in the west.

    ISIS and Israel

On October 23, 2015, ISIS released its first video in Hebrew addressing “the Jews occupying Muslim lands.†“Not one Jew will remain in Jerusalem,†a masked ISIS member warns. “Do what you want in the meantime, but then we will make you pay ten times over.†This video is the latest in a string of statements made by ISIS threatening to invade Israel and slaughter its citizens.

Does ISIS’s rhetoric match its strategic reality? Does it really have its sights set on Israel?

    The “Islamic State’s†Networks of Influence

The media strategy of the self-proclaimed “Islamic State†(IS) is effective and successful. The professional use of social media to project a coherent worldview has enabled IS to be both resilient to account takedowns on social media platform and attempts to deploy “counter-narratives†(or: “alternative narrativesâ€) against the group. IS publishes videos on an almost daily basis: from gruesome execution videos the group is notorious for to movies showing the “statehood†and reconstruction of infrastructure, IS deploys a rich blend of narratives that are conveyed in pictures and related to a corpus of writings of thirty years of jihadism. By establishing a “state†(Arabic: dawla) and by rendering the borders between Syria and Iraq as irrelevant, IS has realized what AQ has pledged for decades: to erode the borders of Sykes-Picot and establish a “state†on the very theological grounds of extremist interpretation.

IS embodies the “new AQâ€, applying AQ ideology within territories in the Sunni-Arabic heartlands of Syria, Iraq, and to a varying decree in Libya, Sinai Peninsula, Yemen etc. Hence, the majority of foreign fighters among the rows of IS are Arabs and the overwhelming majority of IS videos are in Arabic, addressing and targeting a likewise rich and disperse Arab(ic) target audience.

By projecting a physical “Islamic Stateâ€, IS embodies a positive worldview, provides a clear cut videotaped “Sunni Muslim identity†and uses Arab and non-Arab foreign fighters for their media productions to boost the image of this “stateâ€.

British intelligence officials are investigating the mysterious chief of Egypt’s branch of Islamic State, as leaks from the investigation into the downing of a Russian passenger plane point to militants planting a bomb in the hold.

Abu Osama al-Masri, the mouthpiece and supposed head of Isis’s affiliate in Egypt, released an audio recording claiming responsibility for the Metrojet plane crash in Sinai.

The shadowy cleric first surfaced in late 2013 when he released recorded statements for the Ansar Beit al-Maqdis jihadi group, which was then linked to al-Qaeda . He has since switched allegiances, becoming the voice of Wilayat Sinai — or Sinai Province — Isis’s Egyptian faction that largely operates out of the restive Sinai peninsula.

According to terrorism experts, Masri is believed to have been born in north Sinai. However, the jihadist, who is in his mid-thirties, grew up in Sharqiya in the Nile Delta, where many of the country’s senior jihadists were born, including Ayman al-Zawahiri, the al-Qaeda chief.

I have a lot of sympathy for the Kurds - it is about time they were given there own homelands. They are not Arabs and they have their own distinctive culture.

Isis claims responsibility as suicide bombers kill dozens in Beirut.

The latest atatcks show how important is to find a polictal solution in Syria where Assad stands down (unless he wins) after elections allowing a stable Government to take over. In the meantime to achieve this ISIS and the other rebel groups need to removed asap.

I wonder if this proposal would be acceptable to other countries?   Seems a sensible enough solution.....Or am I missing something? :unknw:

Wouldn't he have to avoid all of the EU though as we can all extradite to spain if they have a warrant issued on someone.

I see there's another ongoing incident in Mali - okay not Middle East, but I'll get there.

A lot of the problems in this part of the World are due to the large availability of arms and the unstable situation in Libya, since 2011, when our esteemed leader and which ever French counterpart it was at the time, decided to play at being big boys, with big boys toys. Cameron has undeservedly escaped a lot of due flak for this IMHO and also with regards to the situation of European immigration from Libyan shores that has stemmed from his regime change.

I see he is also wishing to engage in Syria now and is confident of getting Parliamentary backing. Fine, if he is just going after IS. It should be remembered that the previous vote was more to do with engaging Assad though. This seems to me to being overlooked at the moment. I would hope that the terms of the Commons approval would specify IS only as targets this time. Would I trust Cameron though? No, he's a slippery, odious man, with whom innocent snakes in the grass might unjustly be compared. After all, snakes just try and live their natural lives.
