It wouldn't be surprising if somewhere reaches 40C today.

Timaru is currently pushing 38C. Their forecast max tomorrow is only 20C!

850hPa temperatures are forecast to get as high as 24C-26C across eastern areas today.

Timaru has exceeded 40C today, just after 4PM. It's their hottest day ever and it may be NZ's hottest day for almost 40 years. And tomorrow their max is 20C lower.

Meanwhile just down the road it's only 20C in Oamaru, about an hours drive away.

Temperatures hit 40 degrees in Timaru

South Island residents are sweltering in record-breaking temperatures that are hitting 40 degrees - and Cylone Yasi is to blame.People living in Timaru today suffered through a high of 40.3 degrees and the MetService believed this to be the hottest temperature recorded in the region since 1962.

"It's quite tricky being outside - you're likely to get thirsty very fast," said MetService forecaster Allister Gorman.

Dunedin residents were also sweltering in 35 degree heat - a temperature believed to have broken the region's previous record of 32.

And Oamaru and Christchurch residents were basking in 36 degree heat in what Gorman called "a classic Canterbury nor'wester".

"Essentially what we're getting is a lot of hot tropical air from Cyclone Yasi. That air has come from the remains of the cyclone across the Tasman and impacted on the Southern Alps."

There is good news: The soaring temperatures were accompanied by low levels of humidity, and Gorman said the region should cool down by midnight.

Cheers for this J07, appreciate your continued inputs on this forum. Thought I might just add my post from your NZ weather thread (hadn't seen this thread):

Record heat (for a specific location) in New Zealand yesterday, with Timaru hitting 40.3C after hovering around 39C for most of the day (remarkably only two degrees below the 42C that Sydney recorded yesterday), beating its previous record of 39.7C from February 1973. All this is associated with the same heat that's been hitting Sydney and NSW, which mirrors the heatwave of 1973 almost to the day and with similar conditions. Sydney saw its hottest night on record at 27.6C which beats it previous record (also from 1973) by over a degree (26.6C).

The 40.3C isn't the hottest NZ nationwide has ever seen though, that goes to Rangiora & North Canterbury in the aforementioned 1973 heatwave, where temperatures climbed to a sizzling 42.4C. So possibly the hottest temperature recorded in New Zealand for almost 40 years...

Temperatures around, or just below, 30 were widespread in the upper North Island (significant due to the coastal proximity and high humidity), with mid to upper 30's relatively common along the east

coasts of both islands. What was also particularly notable was that morning temperatures where significant - mid 30's by 10am in some locations according to unofficial stations - but conditions that unfolded throughout the day such as stubborn high cloud limited the ultimate high for the day.

The east of NZ is very changeable all the time, things change there much faster and more drastically than in the UK. Timaru seems to get it a lot. An example would be a few years back in June it was 20C at midday, then the following midday it was snowing.

This time around, after breaking the record yesterday and hitting 40.3C, the maximum today was a mere 15C, the second coldest place in the country and a rather enormous difference of 25C in consecutive daily maxima!

Apparently a NIWA station in Timaru hit 41.3C, so that's the new daily high for Sunday.

That certainly would be a shock to the system! the temperature really must of dropped like a stone overnight.
