Hail measuring 14cm across -  some of the largest stones ever recorded in Australia - smashed through roofs south of Brisbane on Sunday, leading to a damage bill in excess of $100m. Australia is likely to see more severe storms ( and cyclones ) than normal over the next few months with a La Nina weather pattern. Cyclone season officially begins Nov 1. BoM forecasting a 66% chance of more than 11 cyclones in Australia waters and more than 4 crossing the coastline.

November has been hot and dry across Australia with a stagnant weather pattern and the final week of the month is showing a heck of a lot of heat with some very high temperatures. I don't think the Australia temperature record for November will go ( 48.7c in Queensland in 1990 ) but I'll be watching South Australia state in particular ( 47.9c record in 1993 ) and Northern Territory ( 46.1c record in 1990 ) as potential flashpoints. Chance of very hot weather making it the populated east and south coasts later on, which is always problematic.  October was pleasantly wet as La Nina weather pattern fed moisture inland, there's a lot of hope for the resumption of that in December.

"Temperatures in the mid to high 40s will break numerous November records across central, southern and eastern Australia at the end of the week. One to watch"

A lot has happened this year but it was only 12 months ago ( in December ) that Australia was on fire and heat records were set in every state. Yet here we go again with another possibly 'historic' heat event ( for the month of November, at least ). Will be measured by how many states manage to set a new extreme maximum temperature for Nov and the number of towns and stations likewise to do so.

The record for Australia's hottest ever November day could soon be broken.

FRIDAY NOV 27:   Very hot across Australia today. I have added the maximums on the MetEye map. Hotter tomorrow - good chance of November state temperature records being broken. BoM senior forecaster says: " Heatwaves are normal at this time of year but the temperatures and duration of this event will be exceptional". There will be a high fire risk for New South Wales on Sunday.

SATURDAY NOV 28:   New South Wales recorded its highest November temperature today, 46.9c in the state's upper west. Sydney's maximum of 40.8c was the third highest for November ( records go back to 1859 ). Victoria came within 0.1c of its November record, South Australia state came within 0.4c. Lots of November records at individual stations, mostly in the west and south of  New South Wales. This November may well be the warmest Australia has seen for average temperature, thanks to this widespread multi day heatwave.

Sydney records hottest November night on record

Quote

Sydney has recorded its hottest November night on record, with daytime temperatures of 40C on Sunday. The Australian city recorded a minimum overnight temperature of 25.4C. The heat has prompted the New South Wales (NSW) Fire Service to issue a total fire ban for most of the eastern and north-eastern parts of the state.

Firefighters are battling dozens of wildfires in the state. Temperatures over the weekend have also soared in other parts of the country. These included South Australia and Victoria.

Evening temperatures at Sydney Airport have now dropped to 25C at 17:30 (06:30 GMT), local reports said. Hotter weather is expected again from Tuesday, despite the official start of summer still being a few days away.

A chilly Christmas morning here with a minimum of 8.9c and a mountain summit minimum of -1.0 ( 1270m ). There was the slight prospect of a dusting of snow to begin with, but no luck this year. A forecast maximum of 19c in the city with some sun at times, pleasant enough. Merry Christmas.

Australia had its fifth wettest December on record and the coolest since 2011. With warm seas and low pressure over  tropical waters on both sides of the continent its probably a mild surprise not to see the first cyclone of the season yet ( Nov-April ). BoM are forecasting 11-14 with at least 4 land crossings. Recent cyclone note from BoM does suggest a "moderate" chance of the first one forming early next week, over northern waters, in The Gulf of Carpentaria between Queensland and Northern Territory.

2020 was quite an average year for temperature and rainfall in Tasmania. I have taken the extreme weather statistics for Tasmania and superimposed them onto a map.

Possibly "over 100" homes lost to bushfire in the Perth hills yesterday, according to a radio broadcast this morning. I think it's the most destructive fires in Western Australia since 1961 - but I can't verify that, I earlier did my own quick search. Perth has had 0.2mm since December 15 -  the summer monthly averages are just under 20mm. Nothing extreme or unusual about the temperatures in Perth this season, although they have been moderately elevated recently. The rest of Australia has had very little fire activity this summer, after last season's disaster.

A reflection of Australia's summer which is about to come to an end: just 5 days exceeded 40c in the state capital cities this season ( in Perth and Adelaide only ), compared to 27 in total last summer - in which there were multiple days of 40c+ everywhere, almost all during the bushfire emergency of December 2019.  The 27 days ( season 2019-20 ) 26 days ( season 2013-14 ) and 20 days ( season 2008-09 ) are in fact the three highest figures I could find going all the way back to the 19th century.

The long-term averages reflect a cities complete record set. They are approximate figures and have been rounded.  Not the most accurate measure of heat situation over a season but does show widespread, arid heat was very limited this season.

Australia had its coolest summer since 2010-11 and second coolest of the past 20 years.  Rainfall was +29% above average. There was some expectation the eastern side would have a wetter season. Queensland for instance had a rainfall anomaly of just +8%.  Few flooding events this summer ( and only in the tropics ) and just a single weak cyclone crossing the coast,  certainly not typical of a La Nina summer.
