Bushfire approaching Canberra this evening - southern suburbs are on alert. Next four days ( Wed-Sat ) has forecast of 36,39,42,42. The 42c on Saturday would approach the February record  ( 42.2 in 1968 ). This new round of heat in south-east Australia will likely provoke other blazes still burning in New South Wales and Victoria.

Canberra State of Emergency.  Fire Service map projects bushfire entering southern Canberra suburbs during Saturday ( under worse case scenario ). Today's max in Canberra was 41.9c ( 14 above average ) the city's second hottest January day. Hottest was 44.0c on the 4th of this month and third is 41.6c in January 2019 and 2013. Saturday forecast max is 41c. Very hot across south-east Australia today: Melbourne 42.9c ( 17 above average ) and 40.4c in Hobart ( 18 above average). This is Hobart's first summer on record to have two 40c+ days...

No harm to Canberra as of late Saturday afternoon but a new February heat record of 42.7c today. That's three months in a row setting a new monthly heat record ( December 41.1 and January 44.0  ). It's a similar story across inland south-east Australia this summer.

Canberra highest temperatures in February ( records since 1939 )

42.7.....2020 1st

42.2.....1968 1st

41.6.....2017 11th

41.0.....2017 10th

40.3.....2009 8th

The following maps have just hit the BoM website. After the spectacular heat and dryness of December a comparatively wetter and cooler January for Australia.

Fires are about to come to an end with hundreds of millimetres of rain forecast over the next few days down the New South Wales coast.  Meanwhile severe tropical cyclone Damien ( cat 4 ) will cross the Western Australia coast on Saturday.  This will be the second cyclone to cross the Australia coast this season. Major flooding is likely to be the new story on both sides of the country shortly.

In Sydney my local area has had 335mm since 10pm Thursday to 7pm Sunday and its still going at about 10mm per hour - about 135 since 9am today, Although the radar is now looking like it will ease back to showers in a few hours hopefully. Generally the whole region has 100-150mms since 9am. They are saying its the biggest rainfall event in NSW region since 1998, and yes there won't be many fires left burning in the wake of that - although its sure to miss some parts.

Australia's major cities had 27 days above 40c this summer which is an all-time record. Most of the extreme heat days were in December. I say 'had' because it appears summer weather is quickly coming to an end. I went through the BoM database to get all the relevant statistics. I chose 40c+ days because they get a bit of attention. Of course, my exercise doesn't capture other days in the very high 30's, it's much rarer to get a 40c+ day in Hobart than Perth for example, and it misses higher temperatures that are always recorded a short distance away from the coastal city weather sites. Nevertheless, it was fun to plot the last 20 years and like most temperature trends just about everywhere, reveals a upward trajectory. I will update this chart at the end of the summer if there's any more to come.

Hahaahhaha. You beat me to it! I was about to post the time lapse too!

It’s absolutely incredible. How does something like that form? It’s literally a combination of microbursts within a thunderstorm. I thought that they were mammatus clouds at first. It’s remarkable!

After the hottest and driest December on record in Australia summer progressed wetter and cooler.  Not enough to ease significant long-term rainfall deficiencies. Summer average temperature statistics to be released in a few hours! December was 'off the charts' for warmth but January was cooler and February at first glance appeared to be cooler still.

Nice rainfall recovery in Australia this year after the driest year on record last year, as IOD plummets to neutral.  Especially pleasing for drought ravaged agricultural farmlands of New South Wales. There has been no temperature extremes either in the last two months after a wild ride of records during the first half of summer.

Glorious autumn weather in Western Australia which will continue into Easter.  It may be so good the authorities will close the beaches in Perth to avoid crowds and the health risk (  beach bans have been in place in other states for a while ). Perth's forecast temperature is 36c on Good Friday and 37c on Saturday ( average is 26c ). The April record is 37.6c in 1910 so that'll be something to watch.  Last Easter Western Australia had its first April snow in 49 years - so quite a contrast.

Perth crushes April heat record today ; 39.5c ( 13 above average ) shortly before 2pm. Appears the city beaches escaped a lock-out, but were police patrolled. Hot weather ends and weather pattern not favorable for heat to make it to the east.

Perth highest temperatures in April ( records since 1897 )

39.5.....2020 11th

37.6.....1910 9th

37.3.....2013 8th

37.1.....1971 3rd

36.7.....1906 5th

Almost the entire stretch of Queensland's coast had its coldest or one of its coldest May days on record yesterday. Cloud streaming down the from the tropics with light rain in parts sealed in cool air moving up from the south. Tropical cities such as Rockhampton, Townsville and Mackay had a maximum of 12-14c ( about 12-14 below average ) and Brisbane's maximum of 15.1c ( 9 below average ) was its third coldest May day since records began in 1887. A bit more detail with pictures below

Some of Queensland's coastal towns have shivered through their coldest May day in more than a hundred years, figures from the Bureau of Meteorology show.

Batten down the hatches. WA’s once-in-a-decade storms are here and residents across the State are urged to ‘take action now’.

Around 50,000 customers were without power on Monday due to storm-related outages, utility Western Power said.

Remember the power cuts when I lived in Perth but they were largely because of thunderstorms.

May was the first colder than average month in Australia ( compared to the 1961-1990 period ) since October 2016 according to the National climate report just released by the BoM - a pretty decent anomaly too of -0.6c.  The cold day in Queensland on May 23rd was also historically significant. Easily the coldest May day on record for the state for average temperature, -0.5c below the previous record  set in 2012.
