Current forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology for Christmas Day here:

Posted Image

I suspect it will probably creep back towards the high 20s in the coming days, but regardless, it looks like being a humid/sweaty Christmas here. Medium-term forecasts currently suggest a trough will move into the north of the state on Christmas Day.

Summary here over the past week (Date/Min/Max/MaxWindGustDirection&Time/24hrRainfall):

Dec 17th - 20.2ºC/26.7ºC - SSW 48km/h @ 7:36am - Nil

Dec 18th - 20.5ºC/25.9ºC - SSE 24km/h @ 9:57am - 6.4mm

Dec 19th - 22.4ºC/28.3ºC - NNE 46km/h @ 4:25pm - 1.0mm

Dec 20th - 21.8ºC/29.2ºC - N 35km/h @ 12:13am - Nil

Dec 21st - 22.8ºC/27.7ºC - SSW 39km/h @ 12:32am - 13.0mm

Dec 22nd - 20.6ºC/27.5ºC - ENE 28km/h @ 1:45pm - Nil

Past week:

A warm to very warm and humid week. Troughs sitting near the region produced some showers and isolated storms, with most of these storms occurring nearer to the ranges and the coastal fringe tending to get the showers. In the early hours of the 20th, an area of storms came within a couple of kilometres of here but missed out on getting a storm cell pass right over us. It was still a nice show of nearby lightning though.

This week (Dec 23rd to Dec 29th):

Fine conditions should prevail here through today and tomorrow. A low pressure trough will move into the state tomorrow, and is expected to be near the northeast of the state during Christmas Day (Tues) and temporarily stall about the region during Boxing Day (Wed). Christmas Day should begin as a warm, humid and fine day. However during the afternoon and into the evening, there should be a few showers develop along with the chance of a thunderstorm. Boxing Day should see a few showers and the slight chance of a thunderstorm in the morning, with mainly fine conditions expected to develop by evening. The trough is expected to retreat westward into the central inland of NSW/QLD on Thursday, which should allow for fine conditions here on the coast. At this stage, it's a bit uncertain what the trough will do later this week, but it looks like the chance of an afternoon/evening shower on Friday and the slight chance of a shower on Saturday.

Merry Christmas to everybody, enjoy the time with family, friends and/or food. Posted Image

Melbourne set a new December record high overnight low of 27.4C on Christmas Eve morning, beating the previous record by 0.2C.

However because of the BOMs ridiculous 9am reset rule, "officially" it will only be 24.3C as that was the temp at 9am the previous morning Posted Image

Christmas Day was pretty ordinary, only 22C and mostly cloudy, but shocking in Sydney where they are are getting rain all day and temps as cold as 16-17C after breifly reaching 20C in the morning.

Models are showing a pretty significant burst of heat aound Jan 5th. GFS showing 850 temps up to 30C over northern Vic and 26C over southern Vic. Long way out, but if it happens, it could mean temps anywhere around 45-48C in NW Vic, adjacent parts of SA and NSW, and 40-43C in Melbourne.

That does make sense to me, for in the old days it would have been inconvenient to have weather observers across the country re-setting their thermometres at midnight, every night.

Now there is no need for that with electronic feedback, but the 9am rule does make statistics comparable with older data.

A high of 34.3C here today. The hottest Christmas Day I've ever experienced by some distance!

No hot Christmas roast with english pud then?

Very dry in Victoria and Tasmania of late, fire dangers would be a concern on the 5th.

The heat is building up in the west. Perth is expecting 4 consecutive days of 40+ degrees starting today, with a potential 7 consecutive days of 38+, making it the longest stretch of 38+ on record there.

We don't get that here in the UK! Amazing heat really! How do you all cope?

I live in temperate Tasmania..so summers are bearable here...a couple of days in the mid 30s, and thats our lot.

Which is fine by me!

Past week:

Overall a fairly pleasant week. Christmas Day saw mid to high level cloud ruin storm development on the coast, but about 100kms west in the clearer air there were some quite strong storms. We still received some light rain in the evening/overnight. A bit of drizzle developed later on Boxing Day, it also became a little bit chilly later in the afternoon as temperatures dropped to around 21ºC with a fresh wind. Storms fired near the southerly change on the 28th (one of those storms on the last image below), but weakened dramatically after 9pm. We've had some rotten storm luck lately.

Midday images at the northeast-facing Bonny Hills weather cam, and favourite image of the week at either the NE or W-facing webcam. It gives a pretty good idea of what is like here, even though it is 85kms down the coast. Being that bit further south, it receives slightly more cloud than here through the year. This week (Dec 30th to Jan 5th):

A high pressure system passing through the Tasman Sea area should bring fine weather through today, tomorrow and Tuesday. On Wednesday, a southerly change will move through during the day, possibly bringing a light shower that evening or overnight. Another high pressure system is expected to move into and sit in the Tasman through Thursday, Friday and Saturday bringing fine weather.

Perth hits 42.1C today, but relief is finally on the way

PERTH has capped off 2012 with the hottest day of the year as the mercury tipped 42.1C late this afternoon.

It was easily the hottest day of the week-long heatwave and the equal warmest day of the year, with January 28, when the temperature also peaked at 42.1C. But relief is in sight with 34C tipped for New Year's Day and a cool 27C on Wednesday. The temperature dipped to 20.9C at 5.08am overnight after yesterday's high of 37.5C, which came around 10.30am, before a strong north-westerly wind cooled the city and prevented it reaching the expected 41C. By 8.30am today the temperature had already raced to 33C in the city, heading toward the expected 39C top. As the temperature in the city reached a blistering 41.6C at 1.22pm today, the winds swung around the south-west but a cool change did not eventuate.

It hovered around the 41C mark until just after 4pm before the sea breeze finally began taking effect. Scorching heat was felt all over the metro area - Jandakot also hit 41, while Perth Airport reached 42.2C as most areas endured 39C-41C temperatures. Just east of the city, Pearce topped out at 42.7 and Gingin hit 41.5C, while in Geraldton it was a stifling 43.9C at 12noon - the hottest spot in WA.

Extreme bushfire threat in South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania on Friday.

Adelaide 42, Melbourne 39 and windy, Hobart 35 and windy, as the heat in the west moves into the south and east.

Looks like sticking around for several days after that too, but perhaps not quite as intense. So quite a pronounced heatwave coming up for eastern and southern states.

Local radio has just gone to emergency broadcasting in southern Tasmania as bushfires cause evacuations of townships just north of Hobart. A windy hot day here today, with worse to come tomorrow, this is very concerning I am afraid Posted Image

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that strong and gusty northwesterly winds over the next two days will bring a dry air mass with high temperatures from the Australian continent over Tasmania.

Little or no rainfall is expected over the next two days.

Minimum temperatures overnight are expected to be mostly in the mid-to-high teens and around 20°C in the southeast.

Tomorrow, temperatures above 30°C are expected over most of the State including the Bass Strait Islands. Highest maximums are expected in the South-East with temperatures above 40°C a possibility.

Some locations in the South-East may equal or exceed their record high maximum temperatures tomorrow.

Forecast max of 26ºC here tomorrow. Yay for living on the east coast!

Hobart set a new record overnight low with 25.7C. Summers here, on average, are similar to those in Yorkshire and parts of the Midlands, just with the potential for severe heat.

Astonishing stuff...One of the warmest nights on record. But 9am-9am reading was 23-23.5. Record daily minimum was 24.7 in the 1880s. A very windy night.

This afternoon it has reached 40.7 degrees - just 0.1 degrees short of the all time record!

That was set on this date, in 1976.

So this thus far is the second hottest day on record, and the hottest day for 37 years.

I have never experienced anything like it - walking outside is like putting your face too close to a fan forced oven with the door open. Hardly anyone in the streets. The poor birds aren't moving in the shade and have their beaks open like they can't cope: never observed that before. Cool, dry change coming but not until midnight.

Bushfires persist to the north and south east with more evacuations. Smell of smoke in the air in Hobart.

Edit: Just hit 41.3 NEW RECORD HIGH

December was warmer than normal but by no means close to any record anywhere. This latest heatwave is unusual because it is covering such a large area of the country ( except the eastern seaboard which is having winds of an onshore nature ). Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide have had longer stretches of extreme heat. Central Australia is going to stay very hot for sometime and it is only Adelaide I suspect that has the potential to have many successive days which are going to be very hot ( 35+ ).

Someone from the BOM said the higher than normal temperatures could persist for the rest of the month.

But compared to 2009 and other historical heatwave summers, it is so far a bit further behind the top rankers. But this event is more rare than common. It defiently has been very dry in the last 2-3 months in most places.

Tasmanian record is 42.2 in NE Tasmania during the SE Australian heatwave of 2009.

Before that, Hobart held the record of 40.8 in 1976.

Just had to amend my above post about last nights minimum. Whilst it was one of the warmest nights on record here, the 9am to 9am reading was just a bit over 23.

I shouldn't think it is too exciting for the people whose homes and businesses could burn down or have already done so.
