How Many Times Has This Happened?

I was just looking through temperature averages/records of Oklahoma, and I found something bizarre and very interesting. The November 11th max and min records were both set in 1911!

Can anyone find anything like this for any other location? That must have been one hell of a temperature drop.

At least one Colorado site has weathered such a phenomenon, said state climatologist Nolan Doesken. While it's difficult to access historical data from many of the hundreds of weather recording stations in the state, Doesken could find information from the airport station at Alamosa that confirmed his suspicion about that southern Colorado town.

On Aug. 24, 2002, the station there reported a high of 85 and a low of 33, both records for the date. Interestingly, high and low records also were set the next two days: 87 and 30 on Aug. 25 and 88 and 31 on Aug. 26.

Pueblo had some close calls but never pulled off the trick.

For such a feat to take place, Doesken said, the weather must be totally or nearly clear, with light wind and very low humidity. The temperature range usually will have to exceed 55 degrees. These conditions are likely only in open valleys at moderately high elevations and in summer or early autumn.

Likely spots where Doesken couldn't confirm such a double play are other stations in the San Luis Valley and locations in the Gunnison and Arkansas valleys, he said.

Of course those weather events are from very different circumstances - passage of a cold front versus a high, dry location with a naturally large diurnal temperature range.

Although both are amazing by our standards, a föhn wind gives the most dramatic temperature swings - the Chinooks of the US and Canada can be incredible.

Edit: here are couple of interesting links about Montana (as unlikely at that may sound!) which is prone to large temperature swings from both arctic fronts and Chinooks.

Oddly, the national record of the first link doesn't appear in the top ten events of the second link.
