Now onto the first Chase day for Tour 1 namely the 11th May. Another decent day with around 10 Tornadoes per day on average. A Notable F4 Tornado in 1999 occured South West of DFW In Mason County around the Coleman area which was quoted as being a Wedge. Also that 2003 year crops up again this time with 3 x F3 Tornadoes mainly across Tennessee and Kentucky, not much to get excited about in the Plains since 2005 as 3 years ago the biggest outbreak on this date occured across the Carolinas and Georgia. So hopefully May 11th is due for 2011 ?

There have been 123 Tornadoes on the 11th May in the period 1999-2010 which works out at an average rounded down to 10 per day . The Largest rated F4 In Texas in 1999

Now onto the 12th May and this has been one of quietest days in the last 12 years and the lowest in the dates I have covered so far.......But when it has had some action then some pretty decent Tornadoes have occured. May 12th 2000 saw a Killer F3 Tornado in Texas and this was followed by the Southern Kansas Outbreak in 2004 including the Attica F4. Also of note was a very nice F3 In the Texas Panhandle in 2005 near Plainview, but the pay off for that Tornado was trashed cars with larger than Softball Hail trapping nearly every Chaser on a Dead end Road near a Farm to the East of I-27. 0ver the course of 2006-2008 not 1 Tornado occured on this date but 2010 saw some action in the Southern Plains once aain

There have been 63 Tornadoes on the 12th May in the period 1999-2010 which works out at an average rounded down to 5 per day . The Largest rated F4 In Kansas in 2004

May 12th was good for me last year at least. Nailed a very tricky forecast chasing the 2% area by TX/OK rather than the 10% area I woke up in near the OK/KS border. I'm sure you guys wouldn't like to repeat your fun and games next May 12th though :p

Keep up the good work Paul. It's fascinating even if it doesn't mean a huge amount for this year! :)

Thanks for the Nice Words Guys

This IS And always was just an experiment to show the Newbies just how many Tornadoes "Could" be likely in the active Tornado period and as Nathan says has no bearing on the upcoming Season it is mainly to show the Climatological Shift Northwards from Texas to the Northern High Plains.

So onto the 13th May and once again another quiet day with a New Low Number of 56 Tornadoes making it the most in-active day of the last 12 years so far. The only fatalities have occured in Missouri in 2009 on the Kirksville Tornado day that was documented on Storm Chasers. One of the most startling facts is Maryland in the East has had more Tornadoes than both Kansas and Oklahoma on this date in the last dozen years.

There have been 56 Tornadoes on the 13th May in the period 1999-2010 which works out at an average rounded up to 5 per day . The Largest rated F3 In The Texas Panhandle in 2005

Now onto May 14th and another very quiet day for the Plains over the last 12 years, once again the Notable Tornado occured in 2003 (This is turning out to look like the best chase year in terms of larger Tornadoes it seems) But another day like the 12th & 13th with an average of 5 per day. Good to see a few Tornadoes that are in my Sig on this date in the last few days. The Dual State Texas/Oklahoma Tornado in 2003 was on the ground for 78 Miles and never got above an F2 Rating

There have been 62 Tornadoes on the 14th May in the period 1999-2010 which works out at an average rounded down to 5 per day . The Largest rated F2 which crossed from Texas into Oklahoma in 2003.

Now onto May 16th and both the numbers getting better and the areas starting to get further North. 2 Main Outbreaks the first in 1999 with a nasty F3 In Iowa which unfortunately became a Killer Tornado with 2 Lives Lost. And again 2003 had a notable Outbreak (Man that must have been an incredible year to chase) Recently numbers not been so good in recent years so hopefully that is a sign things might change in 2011.

There have been 100 Tornadoes on the 16th May in the period 1999-2010 which works out at an average rounded down to 8 per day . The Largest rated F3 which occured in Iowa in 1999.

Now onto May 17th and once again we start to see the Areas affected shifting to the Western High Plains with both Colorado and Nebraska doing well and Texas starting to drop off, interestingly 0 Tornadoes in Oklahoma in this 12 year period and nearly half the numbers come from the Colorado Outbreak of 2000, but the headline maker in that year was the F3 Tornado that happened in the Nebraska Panhandle. I have been chasing since 2004 and cannot remember an Active Chase day on this date in all that time and that is borne out with only 6 Tornadoes in the last 7 years on this date and most of them away from the Action area.

There have been 58 Tornadoes on the 17th May in the period 1999-2010 which works out at an average rounded up to 5 per day . The Largest rated F3 which occured in the Nebraska Panhandle in 2000.

Now onto May 18th and the day is noted for 2 Outbreak days, the first in 2000 and further east than the day before which affected Colorado and Nebraska with Illinois getting 22 of the 37 Tornadoes none of them bigger than F1. And last year in 2010 when the Texas Panhandle and the Western High Plains of Colorado and Wyoming had an active day. Once again Oklahoma just sneaks into the Numbers with 2 Tornadoes in the Oklahoma Panhandle just before Midnight or that state would have been blank again. Not many noteworthy Tornadoes to speak of. But one notable thing for areas affected is 4 of the top five are much more towards the North suggesting the climatic shift really has started to take off.

There have been 95 Tornadoes on the 18th May in the period 1999-2010 which works out at an average rounded up to 8 per day . The Largest rated F2 which occured in the Texas Panhandle and Wyoming in 2010.

Now onto May 19th and the day is noted for 2 Outbreak days, the first in 2004 and also once again 2010 in Oklahoma with the Outflow Boundary near Hennesssey in the High Risk zone and also the Dryline further South in the Moderate Risk. Well we have reached the 20th May which will be the last chase day for Tour 2 in 2011. Could only find 1 real Outbreak day which was way back 10 years ago in 2001 with 33 Tornadoes and the biggest being an F2 In Oklahoma for that year, No Fatalities have occured with Tornadoes on this date in the last 12 years. 21st May will be the 2nd Changeover day for the 2011 Tours and once again we see a firm shift in Climatology towards the Northern Plains. Oklahoma and Kansas have seen Zero Tornadoes on this date over the last 12 years with just a few for Texas as well as you would expect with the time of year. There were 2 notable Outbreaks on this date in 2001 and 2004 being in Michigan and Iowa respectively. Three F2 Tornadoes in 2001 injured upto 15 People and the biggest Tornado occured in 2004 which was an F3 Tornado in Iowa. The Outbreak in 2004 was the start of a 10 day Severe Period that would go on to produce 597 Tornadoes in 10 days at the end of 2004 with the next date May 22nd having Big Outbreaks not just in 2004, but 2008 and 2010 as well.

Now onto the 22nd May which will be Tour 3's First Chase Day in 2011. Over the last 12 years this day has been very productive with Photogenic Tornadoes aplenty. The Shift to the Middle and High Plains is well underway now with the top 6 States all being from Kansas Northwards, Nebraska has the honour of being top dog. On May 22nd 2004 a 2.5 Mile Wide F4 Tornado hit the town of Hallam in Nebraska, amazingly only 1 person lost their lives this down to the warning time given, had this occured further East then the Carnage would have been much worse. More recently in 2008 in a High Risk Set-Up over Kansas an area just outside the High Risk got an EF3 Tornado NE Of Downtown Denver, this Tornado was a Massive Wedge which moved North West near the Town of Windsor, again just the 1 Fatality and I remember this day well as the Tornado occured very close to Noon, Kansas did light up later that Day with Netweather scoring a few Tornadoes. And in 2010 another Very Large Wedge Tornado occured this time near Bowdle in South Dakota this was rated EF4. So May 22nd has something of a WedgeFest Label as the 3 Above Tornadoes were all very wide Massive Wedges and in 3 Seperate High Plains States.

There have been 130 Tornadoes on the 22nd May in the period 1999-2010 which works out at an average rounded up to 11 per day . The Largest rated F4 & EF4 which occured in the States of Nebraska and South Dakota respectively in 2004 & 2010.

Now onto the 23rd May which again over the last 12 years has been a great Day for Tornadoes, one of the Biggest ever Outbreaks to hit the Kansas occured on this day in a High Risk in 2008. This still to this day remains my best day for Numbers of Tornadoes seen in 1 day with 5 Tornadoes seen across Central Kansas. Over 70 Tornadoes would touch down in the State out of 81 on that Outbreak Day. There was also a decent Outbreak in 2007 and once again last year in 2010. There was also a Notable F3 Tornado which hit Kentucky in 2000 with 16 Injuries to People.

There have been 155 Tornadoes on the 23rd May in the period 1999-2010 which works out at an average rounded up to 13 per day . The Largest rated EF4 which occured in the State of Kansas near the Town of Quinter in 2008.

That May 23rd outbreak was an amazing day I wish i was there for, but I left 3 days earlier. Bad times... I remember staying up and watching it unfold til the early hours and going to work completely knackered the next day. Greensburg got so lucky that night with a large tornadic supercell crossing the town as it cycled as the radar presentation on that cell was every bit as good as the EF5 1 year previous. the tornado lifted at the Higway junction just west of town luckily and spent it's entire life over open terrain so only got an Ef3 rating I believe. May 24th and 25th are sure to be big days also coming up I imagine.

Onto the 24th May now which again is a very active day for Tornadoes over quite a few States in the last 12 years. There have not been many Notable Sizeable Tornadoes in EF Strength but the Faith (S Dakota) Wedge last year in 2010 was very Wide and if it had hit anything would surely have been rated a lot Higher. There was also a Great Outflow Boundary day in Northern Oklahoma in 2008 which was not even on the Radar until 1 Supercell tracked across Kingfisher County around Midday and latched onto an Old Outflow Boundary left over from the Previous Day's High Risk. I remember that day as we Busted along with Virtually everyone else in the Moderate Risk in Nebraska. The Biggest Outbreak day came in 2004 with 53 Tornadoes shared almost equally between Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Could also only find 1 Fatality for this day as well.

There have been 154 Tornadoes on the 24th May in the period 1999-2010 which works out at an average rounded up to 13 per day . The Largest rated EF2 which occured in the State's of Oklahoma and South Dakota in the years 2008 & 2010 respectively.

Onto the 25th May now which is another active day and saw the 2nd ever EF5 US Tornado namely the Parkersburg Wedge in the State Of Iowa. This Tornado claimed the lives of 9 People and injured 70 People. At it's widest it was 1/2 Mile wide and was on the ground for just under 41 Miles. There was also a Notable EF3 Tornado on the same day in Minnesota that also was rated a Killer Tornado. 2010 also saw an active day with 25 Touchdowns mostly Landspout Tornadoes in Kansas but a Nice Cone Tornado was documented by Netweather's Tour 3 near Walsh in Colorado from a Classic Supercell. Some quirky stats show absolutely zero Tornadoes for Nebraska and South Dakota on this day.

Moving onto May 26th Now and a bit of a quieter day over the last 12 years, no notable Outbreaks that I could find with the Highest number being 22 Tornadoes way back in 2000. Also No Killer Tornadoes on this day with just a few Injuries from F2 Tornadoes. There have been three F2 Tornadoes in the years 2000, 2002 and 2004 and nothing since then above an F1/EF1. Also a surprisingly quiet time in what you would expect to be an action area namely South and North Dakota with Zero Tornadoes in these States.

There have been 83 Tornadoes on the 26th May in the period 1999-2010 which works out at an average rounded down to 7 per day . The Largest rated F2 which occured in the States of Missouri, Nebraska and Virginia in the years 2000, 2002 & 2004 respectively.
