Just noticed that Shoreham on the South Coast went from -7C 19F to +4c 39F in 1 hour between 8pm and 9pm. An increase of 20F.

Does anyone have any details on record temperature increases or falls in a 1 hour period? Maybe Mr Data??

There has been some incredible temperature increases on the south coast this evening with anecdotal evidence of snow falling off roofs etc...

Temperature here in Southampton has risen from -2.8 at 1915 to 1.5 right now, not so spectacular but the snow is thawing quickly. Amazing how the wind off the sea can warm things up so quickly!

Incidentally, the 15cm snow depth we had yesterday is most likely the highest we have had where I live in 30 years! And definitely the earliest significant snowfall in that time.

Im pretty sure I read in the Guinness world record books that there was a rise from -20C - +7C but I cannot remember the timespace between the two temperatures recorded, but very short indeed.

"A new December record was set: -27.2C at Altnaharra in the Highlands soon after midnight the 30th; this is also (with Braemar in January 1982) the equal record lowest temperature recorded in Britain this century. As the winds then strengthened, the temperature there rose from -21.2C (the midday reading!) to -1.0 in under three hours on the afternoon of the 30th"

That's a record I think.

Strange day here in Andover, Hants. All day it's been foggy and -4C. When it got dark it fell to -6C and the trees were full with ice from the freezing fog. 2 Hours later it's raining, -4C and glazed ice everywhere. It's +2C now and the roads are looking wet rather than iced over. Thank god!
