Basic Help About Models And The Weather

This post is for the considerable number of newcomers, some of you may be new to model watching some with experience. First of all welcome to you all.

I'm not part of the team that tries to ensure everyone is dealt with fairly. Its easy to jump in when the weather looks interesting but please take time to read the do's and don t's at the head of each thread. Principle amongst them is to stay on topic.

Anyway enough of the admin to more interesting stuff.

The main model for watching is GFS, partly because it has so much data available and I suspect because it has 4 runs per day. UK Met and ECMWF have 2. There are other models but pretty well all of them are catered for in Net Weather.

If you have some spare cash, perhaps someone has asked about a Christmas present then Extra is well worth the outlay and there are various levels of data depending on how much you pay, again see below for what is on offer and the costs, per month or per year.

To the more exciting bit looking at charts and this is for beginners.

There are a whole host of Net Weather Guides to help you get up and running pretty quickly, understanding what you see posted and then beginning to get enough confidence to post yourself. Do NOT be afraid to post, no one will or should try to make you look foolish. If they do simply click on the button at the bottom left of any post 'report' and admin/mods will deal with it. Try not to retaliate. remember all of us had to start our learning curve somewhere, just enjoy that. To be honest, and its understandable, there are one two out there who seem to want to run before they can walk so to speak.

Near the top and applicable to this time of the year is this link by one of the Net Wx forecasters-giving information on the type of weather set up that occur in winter with lots of charts to help explain the different types

If snow is your favourite then be prepared for the difficulty of trying to predict will it snow or rain and don't expect for the model to even get the area of precipitation correct, either where, when or how much, often not until 24 hours out. This guide goes through the various factors to try and predict what may happen at your location including factoring in effects like being close to the sea or elevation.

There really is a huge amount for you to use as you learn about the weather and the models.

Question for you john how if the wind over the uk comes from the n east which is usually a dry wind for us in the swest how is the outlook on netweather showery ?very rare that showers can get as far west as swales with that wind direction.

I have to say I do not know-I assume you are looking at the model output and not a personalised forecast?
