Tropical Depression 14

The fourteenth tropical depression of the West Pacific season formed in the early hours to the south of Hainan Island. 14W has moved northwards across the island at 30kt intensity. The long term future for 14W is bleak. The depression is trapped in a weak steering environment with very little motion expected over the next few days. Continued interaction with land should result in fairly quick dissipation of the depression. If 14W manages to move eastwards back over water, it is only likely to experience high shear which will also result in dissipation.

14W has dissipated over the northern half of Hainan Island. Regeneration is not expected due to high shear and further land interaction.

According to Isobel Lang on Sky News Weather, Tropical Depression 14W and another low have dumped 50 INCHES (!!) of rain over Hainan Island in the last week. That's almost a metre and a half!

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
