September 2010 Llanwnnen, Ceredigion

Summary: Wet and changeable; near average temperatures

The wettest September recorded hereabouts (srb 2002), and the most days of heavy rain (over 10mm) of any month so far this year. A good variety of temperatures for a change, after the lack of extremes throughout Summer, with a mix of warm and cool spells. Some notably cold and frosty nights towards the end.

1st- 5th: Warm and mostly dry. Sunny 1-3rd.

6th- 16th: Very unsettled, spells of rain, heavy at times. 24mm on 6th. Near normal temperatures, but rather cool from 13th. Sunny spells at times too.

17th- 19th: Mostly dry with sunny intervals. Cool to average temperatures, with a ground frost 18th.

20th- 21st: Mostly dry and warm with sunny spells.

22nd-23rd: Rain/ showers, some very heavy but still quite warm with and also sunny spells.

24th- 27th: Cool and dry with sunny periods. Notably cold by night, 2 air frosts, and the lowest reading I have had in September of -1.8c on the 26th.

28th- 30th: Dry and rather warm 28th, but then unsettled with rain and showers to end the month. The month’s only incident of fog occurred on the last morning.

I didn't manage to log weather statistics this month, although I will say that it's quite interesting (although not that unusual) that Tulloch Bridge in the Scottish Highlands reached -4.2'C this early in the game.

A very average month, but still the coolest September since 2002. At 117% of normal rainfall, it was the first month to be wetter than average since February.

The first few days were dry and sunny with average temperatures by day but cooler nights. It then turned much wetter in the second week with rain falling on every day from the 6th-16th. It was much warmer however, with temperatures into the low 20s on the 9th, 10th and 11th. The warmest day was the 11th, when it reached 21.8C. Sunshine levels were at a premium though, due to the airmass being of a tropical maritime origin.

It then turned much cooler on the 17th, as flow turned to the north-west. Single-figure minima made a return and the 17th was a cool day, with a maximum of just 13.8°C. It became briefly warmer again on 21st and 22nd, reaching 21.1°C and 21.7°C before cooling down once again. At first the flow was northerly, giving cool days and further single figure minima but then the wind turned to the north-east, providing four days of overcast skies, persistent rain and temperatures between 10-14°C by day and night. The sunshine returned for the final two days of the month.
