UK Outlook for Wednesday 16 Jan 2013 to Friday 25 Jan 2013:

It should remain cold across many parts of the UK, with a good deal of dry and frosty weather, especially for central areas, but there will be some wintry showers and persistent rain, sleet and snow to watch out for on occasion. The detail of where the snow is most likely to be is currently uncertain at this time. At the moment, scattered snow showers look most likely to affect eastern parts of the UK with a risk of some significant snowfall here, whilst occasional periods of persistent rain and milder conditions may fringe into western areas, but turning to snow as it runs into the cold air. An ongoing risk of icy stretches overnight, and freezing fog may also be an issue during the cold and clearer nights.

Excellent. Atlantic attacks expected, but fronts not expected to make there way across all of the UK is the way I read that. Very exciting times ahead next week I feel.

My thoughts exactly! Good to hear that seems like Battleground UK, with the milder air trying to push in and restricted to far west, further east much colder and in the middle alot of snow, I hope for continuation of updates like this on coming days!

hopefully this battleground line wont be too far east for my location, i fear it will for most of the west but this will move about. Could end up not getting much out of this for my location which will be a shame. MetO seem fairly confident of a battleground situation however with sig snowfall for some.

UK Outlook for Thursday 17 Jan 2013 to Saturday 26 Jan 2013:

There remains a lot of uncertainty in the details throughout this period, however on the whole it should remain on the cold side across many parts of the United Kingdom, with a good deal of dry and frosty weather, especially for central areas. There will also be some sleet and snow to watch out for on occasion, with perhaps eastern areas most likely at risk seeing any significant snowfall. Also there will be an ongoing risk of icy stretches overnight, and freezing fog may also be an issue during the cold and clearer nights. Some milder conditions and more persistent rain and hill snow though may fringe into western areas on occasions throughout the period.

As Dave said in the model thread earlier, a cold themed update but the mention of temp milder into western fringes to cover all the models, a good update for me.

UK Outlook for Friday 18 Jan 2013 to Sunday 27 Jan 2013:

There remains some uncertainty in the details throughout this period. However, on the whole it should remain on the cold and settled side across many parts of the United Kingdom, with a good deal of dry and frosty weather, especially for central and eastern areas. There will also be some sleet and snow on occasions, with central and eastern areas most likely to be at risk. Also there will be an ongoing risk of icy stretches overnight, and freezing fog may also be an issue during the cold and clearer nights, which may be slow to clear by day. Some milder conditions and more persistent rain and hill snow may spread into western areas on occasions from next weekend onwards.

UK Outlook for Saturday 19 Jan 2013 to Monday 28 Jan 2013:

Some uncertainty in the details of the forecast, however through the weekend there should be a good deal of dry and bright weather, but with the risk of snow showers in the east and southeast. More unsettled in the west with spells of rain and snow, which may spread further east on Sunday. Cold or very cold with widespread frost, and the risk of ice. Probably turning more unsettled thereafter, with spells of rain, heavy at times in the west and southwest, and some hill snow, which could fall to lower levels at times in the north and east. Best of drier weather in eastern areas. Frost overnight, and most areas staying cold or rather cold, although perhaps occasionally near normal in the west and southwest.

UK Outlook for Sunday 20 Jan 2013 to Tuesday 29 Jan 2013:

Turning more unsettled than of late, with spells of rain, which will be heavy at times in the west and southwest, and some hill snow, which could fall to lower levels at times in the north and east. The best of any drier weather will tend to be towards eastern areas. Windy at first, with the risk of gales in exposed coastal areas, and remaining windy at times throughout the rest of the period, especially in the south and west. There will continue to be fairly widespread frost overnight, as well as the risk of icy stretches, with most areas staying cold or rather cold, although perhaps occasionally near normal in the west and southwest.

I have to say that is in my view very poorly worded!

If the senior man has sanctioned that I reckon he must be having a bad day at the office.

It really does need rewriting

Do you understand what the forecast is saying?

Can you read where it is going to rain and where it will snow?

Why will frost be widespread if it is going to remain windy?

I'll have a shot!

How about

Still uncertainty about how far east and north the Atlantic will get. However most areas away from the SW look like remaining cold with frost quite widespread although this is dependent on winds dying down overnight.

Bands of rain moving into the SW and parts of the west, heavy at times in the SW, and windy too with gales at first for the more exposed western coastal areas. The boundary between rain and snow is hard to give details on this far out but high ground, even at times in the SW, is going to have snow as the rain bands try to move in. For northern and eastern areas sleet or snow on low ground and with the risk of heavier falls on the hills. The snow is most likely as successive lows either stop or tend to slide in the strong upper flow towards the continent.

Not sure about the last sentence, the rest is my rewrite of what Met have written. The last sentence is more my take on what I think they may be believing will happen. The upper air tends to support that view in the 6-15 day time frame.

Not sure what you mean by take it easy I am just puzzled by ex colleagues phrasing, it 'aint good is how I see it.

UK Outlook for Monday 21 Jan 2013 to Wednesday 30 Jan 2013:

The weather during the final third of January is likely to be more unsettled than of late. Rain and snow will probably affect all parts of the United Kingdom at times, with southern and western areas potentially seeing some heavy rain at times. Northern and northeastern areas are likely to see further snow, although sleet and snow may be more widespread across the UK at times. It will be generally windy, with the risk of gales in exposed coastal areas. Temperatures will generally be below average for the time of year, with fairly widespread frosts overnight, as well as the risk of icy stretches. Southwestern areas are considered most likely to see temperatures nearest to normal though, and all areas may become less cold towards the end of the month.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 23 Jan 2013 to Friday 1 Feb 2013:

After an unsettled start to next week, many regions are likely to become dry and more settled from midweek. Some eastern parts can expect to still be affected by some snow at times early in this period, whilst over the far west and southwest cloudier spells with rain, sleet and snow are possible later next week. It should be generally cold for the rest of next week, with overnight frosts, ice and freezing fog patches. Remaining cold for the start of the following week, but conditions are then expected to gradually turn more unsettled and less-cold from the west as Atlantic weather systems attempt to push into the UK. This change to more unsettled conditions is likely to be accompanied by spells of snow in some areas.

UK Outlook for Thursday 24 Jan 2013 to Saturday 2 Feb 2013:

Many regions are likely to become dry and more settled for a time later next week. However, cloudier conditions with spells of rain, sleet and snow may develop over some western parts towards the end of next week and into the weekend. It will be cold for late January, with hard overnight frosts, widespread ice and freezing fog patches where winds fall light, these slow to clear from some areas. Some areas still cold through next weekend, but during the following week conditions probably turning both more unsettled and less cold from the west as Atlantic weather systems to push into the UK. This change to more unsettled conditions is likely to be accompanied by spells of snow in some areas.

Outlook for Friday 25 Jan 2013 to Sunday 3 Feb 2013:

Many southern and central regions are likely to start dry on Friday but generally rather cloudy. However, more unsettled conditions with spells of rain, sleet and snow along with increasing winds, will develop over northwestern parts. The unsettled conditions are then expected to spread erratically southeastwards over the weekend. Remaining cold initially, with hard overnight frosts, widespread ice and some freezing fog patches, these locally slow to clear from some areas. However, during the weekend and into the new working week onwards, conditions are likely to turn rather less cold, as more-unsettled Atlantic weather systems push into the UK. This change to more unsettled conditions is likely to be accompanied by spells of snow in some areas. Later in the period, snow will be mainly restricted to upland areas.

UK Outlook for Saturday 26 Jan 2013 to Monday 4 Feb 2013:

Starting dry, cold and cloudy in many southern and eastern areas, but unsettled, windy conditions in the north and west will spread across the UK during the weekend. Some heavy rain is likely in the north and west, with this likely to become sleet and snow as it moves across central, eastern and southern parts. More showery weather will follow in the west. Cold conditions with frost, ice and some freezing fog patches will gradually be replaced by temperatures closer to average by the end of the weekend. During next week, changeable, milder weather seems likely with spells of cloudy wet weather interspersed with brighter skies and showers. However, there may still be some snow over high ground with a chance of below average temperatures again later in the period.

A slushy mess on the roads and pavements I'll be glad to see the Atlantic break through and bring us something milder

I dread to think what the pavements will be like if it all freezes over

UK Outlook for Sunday 27 Jan 2013 to Tuesday 5 Feb 2013:

Rain, heavy in places, will move eastwards across all areas on Sunday, perhaps with some snow in the east at first, but somewhat milder conditions will take over from the west during the day. Then a very unsettled period of weather looks to establish itself, with further spells of rain, interspersed with clearer, showery interludes, for many areas. It will also be windy at times, with a risk of gales or even severe gales in the west. Temperatures will recover to around the seasonal average in many parts, although it will often feel cold in the wind and rain. Initially frost and ice will become less of a threat, but there are indications that the cold air may make more advances towards the UK by the end of the period.

UK Outlook for Monday 28 Jan 2013 to Wednesday 6 Feb 2013:

Rather unsettled throughout much of this period, with spells of rain, and hill snow in the north, interspersed with clearer, showery interludes, for many areas. It will also be windy at times, with a risk of gales, especially in the north, perhaps even severe gales over exposed coastal and upland areas. Temperatures will recover to around the seasonal average in many parts, although it will often feel cold in the wind and rain, with overnight frost mainly confined to inland shelter. As the period goes on, the most unsettled and windiest weather will be most frequent towards the northwest of the UK, with the best of any drier and brighter weather in the south and east, where there will be an increasing risk of overnight frost.
