UK Outlook for Wednesday 29 Aug 2012 to Friday 7 Sep 2012:

On Wednesday, rain is expected to spread eastwards across the UK, heaviest and most persistent in the south, but more intermittent further north. Windy too, with gales possible across the south and far northwest. By Thursday, showers will be mainly confined to the east, with sunny spells elsewhere. Thereafter, a more settled period looks likely with extended spells of fine, dry weather in most areas, although rain is still possible at times, mainly in the north and west. Temperatures are expected to be generally close to average, but occasionally warm in the south and southeast. However, some chilly nights are also likely, especially over the weekend. As the Paralympics draw closer the Met Office will have local forecasts so that everyone can make the most of the Games experience.

UK Outlook for Thursday 30 Aug 2012 to Saturday 8 Sep 2012:

On Thursday, a breezy start in the east with some early rain or showers, with other areas probably mostly dry. Thereafter, a generally settled period looks likely with extended spells of fine, dry weather in most areas, although rain is still possible at times, mainly in the north and west. Towards the end of the period, there are indications that rain may become more frequent and extend further south, but there should still be decent periods of dry weather between. Temperatures should be generally close to average, but occasionally warm in the south and southeast. However, some chilly nights are also likely, especially the first weekend. As the Paralympics draw closer the Met Office will have local forecasts so that everyone can make the most of the Games experience.

UK Outlook for Sunday 2 Sep 2012 to Tuesday 11 Sep 2012:

The north-south split across the UK continuing on Sunday and Monday, with northern parts mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. For the rest of the UK, it should be largely dry and bright with spells of sunshine and perhaps some overnight mist and fog. Towards the end of the period, there is a trend to return to more unsettled conditions, with occasional spells of rain but also some fine and dry weather in between. Temperatures, generally close to average in the northwest, but warm elsewhere.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 4 Sep 2012 to Thursday 13 Sep 2012:

Cloud and occasional rain may spread southeastwards across the country with clearer conditions following behind during Tuesday, but perhaps staying mainly dry in the far south. Meanwhile, frequent heavy showers may affect the far north at times with strong, possibly gale force winds here. Most places should become mainly fine, warm and dry by Wednesday, but a chance of more unsettled conditions returning to northwestern parts by Thursday, and perhaps moving further south by Friday and into the weekend, with some uncertainty at this time on how far south this will reach. Meanwhile, cooler and more showery conditions should follow into more northern parts. Staying changeable for the week after, but with the best chance of drier, brighter and warmer weather in the south of the UK.

However, into the end of the working week conditions across northern areas are likely to become increasingly unsettled, with showers of longer spells of rain, but southern parts should hold on to the mainly fine and warm conditions. UK Outlook for Thursday 6 Sep 2012 to Saturday 15 Sep 2012:

Most of England and Wales will start off fine and dry with warm sunny spells. However, Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland are likely to be rather cloudy with outbreaks of rain, some of which could be heavy. This trend looks set to continue into the first weekend, with most of England, Wales and Northern Ireland likely to stay fine with further warm sunny spells, although nights may be rather cool, with the some patchy fog developing. However further north it is likely to remain predominantly cloudy, with further spells of rain. Into the second week conditions across southern areas look likely to remain settled. However, towards the north and particularly the northwest, conditions look likely to be rather changeable, with outbreaks of rain punctuated by some drier, brighter periods.

UK Outlook for Friday 7 Sep 2012 to Sunday 16 Sep 2012:

At the start of the period, England and Wales should be largely dry with warm sunny spells and mainly light winds. Often chilly nights though, with mist or patchy fog giving a rather autumnal feel to some of the early mornings. Scotland and Northern Ireland generally cloudier with rain at times, but also some drier, brighter periods, particularly to the east of high ground. Generally breezy here, with strong winds at times and temperatures around normal. As we move towards the latter part of this period, the north-south split in the weather described above looks likely to become more of a west-east division, with western, and especially northwestern, parts rather unsettled, while eastern Britain sees the best of the sunshine. Temperatures still generally somewhat warmer than average.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 12 Sep 2012 to Friday 21 Sep 2012:

This period looks to be characterised by generally unsettled conditions. Northern and western areas of the UK are most likely to see the greatest amounts of precipitation, with some heavy and persistent rain likely at times. That said, southern and eastern areas will also see some rain, especially early in the period. Northern and western areas will also see the windiest conditions, with a risk of gales or even severe gales at times in the north. On the whole, pressure looks to remain higher in the south and consequently, with drier, brighter conditions, the warmest temperatures can be expected here, perhaps rising above average at times. However there will be an increasing risk of mist and fog developing overnight, especially where winds fall light.

UK Outlook for Saturday 15 Sep 2012 to Monday 24 Sep 2012:

A good deal of dry weather is likely for many over the weekend with the best of the sunnier conditions towards southeast England, but this in turn may bring the risk of some overnight fog. However northern parts will be windy at times, with cloudier conditions and outbreaks of rain reaching the northwest by Sunday. Temperatures on the whole will be close to average, but with perhaps some chilly nights across central and southern England. A gradual breakdown though to more unsettled conditions is likely as we head into next week, with outbreaks of rain reaching many parts at times. However towards the southeast drier and brighter conditions inerludes will develop, allowing it to become locally warm by day. Otherwise temperatures are expected to remain close to the seasonal average.

Yea just about how I see things.

Nice to see the daily Express exciting people about hurricane force winds later this week. I'm fed up of telling people this morning that the only noteworthy and potentially damaging winds is likely for the far North with no more than a stiff breeze in the South..Why do people get so hung up on these stories. You really would think they'd learn.

Yes disappointingly there`s still an element of irresponsible reporting amongst the press.

There should be a more factual angle applied to things like weather especially when the possibility-or not in this case-of widespread stormy conditions are being talked about.

I know they have to sell newspapers but i wish they would keep the sensationalism bent on things to items that don`t matter such as celebrities and pop music etc.

come on Phil-next you will be telling me you believe in fairies.

I don't envy any professional forecaster at this time of year. Tropical storms are enormous beasts, I did once read in either the professional Met Magazine or maybe Weather whilst on Ascension Island of the incredible amount of energy that the major hurricane of 1989-90 created.

Lol.

I guess it does no harm to hope for some sensible reporting on the important things though John.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 18 Sep 2012 to Thursday 27 Sep 2012:

Generally unsettled throughout. At first, showers and some longer outbreaks of showery, occasionally heavy rain, will be particularly prevalent towards the north and west of the UK, but increasingly spreading to the east as well by Wednesday, with all these areas likely to experience strong winds at times. The south should see the best of the drier conditions. From late next week, and through the rest of the period, northern and western parts tend to bear the brunt of the wettest and windiest weather, with eastern and southeastern areas probably seeing the best of any longer drier spells. Temperatures will be generally below average, and occasionally rather cold, but perhaps a little above normal at times towards the southeast.
