Thursday 21 Mar - Thursday 4 Apr

The wet and windy weather affecting much of the UK at the start of this period is expected to gradually withdraw to the north and northwest, where there will be a continuing risk of coastal gales. In the south though, drier and less windy weather is likely to predominate, perhaps spreading further north by the start of April. Temperatures will be near normal or rather cold at first, meaning rural frost and fog are likely, especially in the settled weather in the south. However, as spring develops, there will be an overall trend for temperatures to rise.

Tuesday 12 Mar - Thursday 21 Mar

Tuesday and Wednesday will be unsettled. Most likely, rain will be followed by brighter but colder showery conditions. Rain will be heaviest in the north and west and it will be cold enough for snow over northern hills, perhaps even to lower levels here at times. It will be windy for all, with gales or severe gales at times. Similar unsettled weather will continue though the rest of the week. Temperatures will vary around average for the time of year in the south, but it will stay rather cold overall in the north. There is a chance that the colder weather could extend further south at times. More settled weather may develop in the south and east towards the end of the period though.

Friday 22 Mar - Friday 5 Apr

Unsettled weather is likely to affect much of the UK at the start of this period. It is expected to gradually withdraw to the north and northwest though, where there will be a continuing risk of gales. Drier, more settled and less windy weather is likely to predominate in the south, perhaps spreading further north by the start of April. However, further changeable spells are still possible. Temperatures will be near normal or rather cold at first, meaning night frost and patchy fog are likely, especially in the settled weather in the south. However, as spring develops, there will be an overall trend for temperatures to rise, with some noticeably warmer days developing.

Wednesday 13 Mar - Friday 22 Mar

The start of this period is looking unsettled and windy with brighter but colder and showery weather, followed by cloud and rain. The heaviest and most frequent rain will be in the west and northwest. Some snow is likely over northern and central hills, and perhaps to lower levels in the north where it will be cold. It will remain windy as a further Atlantic system is likely to bring a spell of rain towards the end of next week, then turning showery and colder into the following weekend. Some snow is still likely, mainly in the north with the risk of hail and thunder. The colder weather in the north may spread further south at times. Thereafter it will remain largely unsettled, especially in the west and northwest.

Thursday 14 Mar - Saturday 23 Mar

Ongoing unsettled conditions are set to be in place on Thursday with a mixture of drier weather followed by more cloud and rain from the west. Rain is likely to be heavy at times, particularly in the northwest. Brighter, showery conditions are likely to spread across northern and central areas through Friday, accompanied by stronger winds, perhaps gales in the north. Temperatures are likely to fluctuate around normal but overnight frosts are still likely. There are signals for the Atlantic-driven unsettled theme to continue through the following week. Here we are likely to see further spells of wind and rain, followed by drier, more showery periods. Towards the end of the outlook there may be a tendency for the unsettled conditions to be more confined to northern areas.

Sunday 24 Mar - Sunday 7 Apr

At the start of the extended outlook unsettled weather will likely become more confined to the north and northwest of the UK, with a greater chance of drier, brighter weather across southern and southeastern areas. These more settled conditions may extend across the UK through late March and early April. Temperatures through this period are likely to begin cooler, but trending towards normal or above normal, giving noticeably warmer days, though some overnight frosts remain possible. More changeable spells are likely to be short lived, but there is no confidence as to any timings or detail.

Friday 15 Mar - Sunday 24 Mar

Unsettled conditions are set to continue on Friday with strong winds and showers across northern and central areas. Showers will be heaviest in the north, falling as snow over hills, but sunshine is likely between showers. More persistent rain is possible for southern counties on Friday and Saturday. Temperatures are likely to fluctuate around normal but overnight frosts are still likely under clear skies. There are signals for the Atlantic-driven unsettled theme to continue through the following week. We are likely to see further spells of wind and rain, followed by drier, more showery periods. The wettest, windiest weather always most likely in the northwest. Towards the end of the outlook there may be a tendency for the unsettled conditions to be more confined to northern areas.

Saturday 16 Mar - Monday 25 Mar

Cloud and rain are expected to affect the south, and perhaps central parts, of the UK early on Saturday, and will clear with bright and showery weather extending countrywide by the day's end. Showers may be heavy in the north and fall as a mixture of sleet or snow at times. Any strong winds will ease through the day too. Lighter winds and cooler on Sunday. Then there are signals for an Atlantic-driven and unsettled theme through the following week. We are likely to see further spells of wind and rain, followed by drier, more showery periods. The wettest, windiest weather always most likely in the northwest. Towards the end of the outlook there may be a tendency for the unsettled conditions to be more confined to northern areas.

Sunday 17 Mar - Tuesday 16 Mar

Sunshine and showers are likely for many on Sunday, with the risk of hail and thunder. Showers in the north may fall as sleet and snow occasionally, especially over higher ground, but it will become drier into Monday. Any strong winds will ease through the day too. It will then stay unsettled through the week, particularly in the north. We are likely to see further spells of wind and rain, followed by drier, more showery periods. The wettest and windiest weather will always be most likely in the northwest, with the driest conditions for the south and southeast. Snow is likely in the north at times, mainly over higher ground. The unsettled conditions will continue to become more confined to the north and northwest by the end of the period.

The existing unsettled weather will likely become more confined to the north and northwest of the UK, with a greater chance of drier, brighter weather across southern and southeastern areas. These more settled and drier conditions may extend more widely across the UK through late March and into early April, although some more changeable spells are still likely, but there is low confidence as to their timing and detail. Temperatures through this period are likely to start near normal, but then trend towards normal or slightly above the seasonal average. This will give noticeably warmer days in early April, though some overnight frosts will still be possible.

Dry for many on Monday with only isolated showers. Rain and strengthening winds reach the northwest by Tuesday, then spread to other northern and some central areas. Thereafter, the south remains largely dry. It will remain changeable, particularly in the north, with further spells of wind and rain, followed by drier, more showery periods. The wettest and windiest weather will always be most likely in the northwest, with the driest conditions for the south and southeast. Snow is likely in the north at times, mainly over higher ground. Friday 29 Mar - Friday 13 Apr

The final few days of March will see a continuation of the predominantly settled and dry weather across the south of the UK, with and rain and unsettled spells most likely in the northwest. Overnight frost or fog are a risk in the south, with some chilly nights. As we head into April uncertainty increases but it seems most likely that we will see more changeable conditions become established across the UK, more so for northern parts. Temperatures are likely to start off mostly above average, but with a trend to return towards temperatures more typical for the time of year.

I wouldn't worry too much remember they were expecting cold and snow for weeks on end in this update but it never arrived

The south of the UK looks to remain largely dry, and it could perhaps be quite warm in some central and eastern parts of the UK, with sunny periods. However it will remain changeable in the north, with spells of wind, rain, and a risk of gales in places. The weekend may see unsettled weather become more widespread for a time. However, unsettled conditions will become increasingly confined to the far north and northwest towards the end of the month. Temperatures will be around the average for the time of year, although some warmer periods are likely in the south, whilst occasionally in the north it may be rather cold, with a risk of overnight frost, and perhaps some hill snow.

As we head into April, the forecast looks more uncertain, but it seems most likely that we will see changeable conditions across the UK once again, with wet and windy weather interspersed with drier and brighter spells. By the middle of the month, we may see a return of more widely settled weather. Temperatures could potentially start off a little warmer than average.

The south of the UK looks to remain largely dry and settled to begin with, and it could perhaps be quite warm at times in some central and eastern parts of the UK, with the best of the drier and brighter weather here. However, unsettled conditions are more likely in the far north and northwest, where wet and windy weather is more likely from time to time. Temperatures are most likely to be roughly around the average for the time of year, although some warmer periods are likely in the south when the sun shines, whilst occasionally in the north it may be rather cold, perhaps even with a risk of some overnight frost at times.
