In al lfairness to the Met office, I've been looking at the forecast from the 4th January for this week, this is what it reads:

Got to say, that sounds pretty good in terms of general pattern, but if anything they have slightly overdone the MILD air, not the cold...

Indeed kold - careful though, let’s not allow the facts to get in the way ........

They always seem to be decent but for the south the fun stuff never reaches the 'further outlook' so lala land

hmm wonder what the 7 Feb 2019 to Wednesday 21 Feb 2019 will say.....

UK Outlook for Saturday 2 Feb 2019 to Saturday 16 Feb 2019
but in the south there is a chance of weather fronts approaching which bring a risk of rain, sleet and perhaps significant snow at times.

UK Outlook for Sunday 3 Feb 2019 to Sunday 17 Feb 2019:
and this would bring an associated risk of significant snow and ice at times.

UK Outlook for Monday 4 Feb 2019 to Monday 18 Feb 2019:
most likely across southern parts of the British Isles, and this would bring a risk of significant snow and ice at times.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 5 Feb 2019 to Tuesday 19 Feb 2019:
whilst the south could see wetter and occasionally milder interludes, bringing a risk of more significant snow.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 6 Feb 2019 to Wednesday 20 Feb 2019:
whilst the south could see wetter and occasionally milder spells, and these will bring a risk of some significant snow, but only if very cold air becomes established across much of the UK.

Just to clarify, I’m not being disrespectful against the METO as this forecast is basically the impossible job as I’ve said in this thread before, you can barely predict days away let alone 3 weeks away, but these updates have been absolutely useless this winter, I know you’ve chosen this one to make a point but I could equally post 5 others that are utterly wrong

I'm not sure I totally agree. Sure they have highlighted the possible change to cold but having looked through alot of the summaries this winter, they were nearly always said with a large caveat of the possibility of it remaining milder. I think some people are seeing the METO use the phrase 'cold' and assume that means northern blocking, and powerful easterlies/northerlies. Truth is this week for example would likely be classified as 'cold' by the Met office, therefore making that statement factually correct.

They did however make a boo-boo with the easterly...but then again there weren't many that didn't get suckered into that one, especially given background teleconnections as well.

UK Outlook for Monday 28 Jan 2019 to Wednesday 6 Feb 2019:

Cold and showery conditions are likely at first on Monday, ahead of thicker cloud and rain, perhaps preceded by snow, which is expected to move eastwards later in the day. Cold and showery weather will probably make a return on Tuesday. Beyond there, the broad signal is for the unsettled period of the weather to continue, with further bands of rain and hill snow moving east or southeast across the UK, interspersed with brighter showery interludes. Snow remains a risk, mostly in the north, but perhaps further south too, and frosts could be quite widespread. There is still a chance that even colder conditions may develop later in the period with winds swinging round to the east or northeast, bringing an increased possibility of snow.

UK Outlook for Thursday 7 Feb 2019 to Thursday 21 Feb 2019:

This period will most likely start changeable and cold, with spells of rain and hill snow, occasional stronger winds, and brighter showery interludes. As we head further through February there is an increased chance of seeing very cold conditions developing with a greater probability of northeasterly or easterly winds. This will bring an increased risk of widespread, perhaps severe frosts as well as snow, especially in eastern areas. In this scenario the driest conditions will be across the west and northwest, whilst the south could see wetter and occasionally milder spells, bringing the risk of some significant snow, but only if very cold air becomes established across much of the UK.

Like the fact that they say perhaps snow further South too. I wonder if that is after yesterday's snow in Northern home counties

The medium term outlook, for the period before this one actually mentions the risk of more significant cold from easterly winds.

"Still a chance" - in other words doubts remain. Sorry but any sustained cold (and snow) is v much 'up in the air', so to speak.

So they've actually moved the chance of colder conditions from east/north east winds to this outlook instead of just keeping it in the longer term outlook.

Oh well no surprises on the update - all these chances/risks but all remain elusive. Reckon another couple updates before finally meto get bored and finally drop it

Do you only read the last sentence? That's the breakdown scenario.

"As we head further through February there is an increased chance of seeing very cold conditions developing with a greater probability of northeasterly or easterly winds. This will bring an increased risk of widespread, perhaps severe frosts as well as snow, especially in eastern areas."
