Does anyone take note of how accurate these forecasts are? I just wondered if you went back a month and compared the forecast to the actual weather we got, what the success rate is - in broad terms of course.

Well that's true but...they did say they generally had not much confidence and as we all know Atlantic conditions on a prevailing jet stream is easier 'to pin down' and to forecast into the foreseeable than cold/blocked conditions!

UK Outlook for Monday 3 Dec 2018 to Wednesday 12 Dec 2018:

Monday and Tuesday look generally unsettled with rain and mild temperatures in the south, and some brighter, colder, more showery weather affecting the north. Gales are possible in places. Some frost is expected in the north, and the Scottish mountains could have some snow. The rest of the period is likely to see a more changeable pattern becoming established, with some longer spells of dry, albeit colder weather developing. The east and southeast should see the best of the drier conditions, with overnight frost and fog, whilst spells of wet and windy weather become more confined towards the west and northwest, with further hill snow in Scotland. There is a very low likelihood of a cold northerly pattern developing instead, in which snow showers could affect northern and eastern parts.

UK Outlook for Thursday 13 Dec 2018 to Thursday 27 Dec 2018:

The first few days of this period are likely to see an east to west split. Some wet and possibly windy weather is likely in the west, with the east having generally drier weather with some fog, frost and possibly some snow showers too. The second half of December looks most likely to see a return to generally more unsettled weather. Spells of rain and strong winds are set to spread across the British Isles from the west, although remaining most active across western and north-western areas. Temperatures may begin relatively mild in the west and southwest, but colder towards the east, perhaps becoming normal to mild across all parts for the second half of the month.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 4 Dec 2018 to Thursday 13 Dec 2018:

Tuesday and Wednesday look fairly unsettled with rain in the south where generally mild, and brighter, cooler and showery weather affecting the north. Gales are possible in places. Some frost is expected in the north, and the Scottish mountains could have some snow. The rest of the period is likely to see a more changeable pattern becoming established, with most places seeing some rainfall, but a lower likelihood of the longer spells of fine, dry weather between systems than previously suggested. As rainbands move into colder air, there is the increased chance of snow, mainly on northern hills. Northerly winds following rain-bearing systems could bring snow showers to northern parts at times. Temperatures generally around normal to above average in any windier and wetter spells.

I'm not really a fan of Northerlies as being near the centre of the UK they usually mean cold and sun(unless there's embedded troughs) meanwhile places like Braemar and Tomintoul get a tonking.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 5 Dec 2018 to Friday 14 Dec 2018:

Southeastern parts of the UK may start wet on Wednesday, but rain will clear, with most areas becoming dry and bright. This will lead to a cold night and a widespread frost to start Thursday, but many will begin bright before wet and windy weather arrives later. Thereafter, for the remainder of this period it is likely to be more unsettled with further spells of wet and windy weather, interspersed by drier, brighter and showery interludes. Rain will be heavy at times, particularly in western and southwestern areas. Gales are likely at times, and overall temperatures will probably average out on the mild side for most, with any colder spells confined to the north. Later in this period it may turn less unsettled with some longer drier interludes.

UK Outlook for Saturday 15 Dec 2018 to Saturday 29 Dec 2018:

As we head into the middle of December there are signs that it will turn unsettled again with more generally wet and windy weather affecting the UK. This will bring heavy rain and gales or severe gales, with a chance that it may even turn stormy at times. Overall, it is likely to be mild across much of the country with snow tending to be confined to hills in the north. However, in any drier interludes it will turn colder.

I suspect that that update will be pretty much 'on the money'...I hope not, but any evidence pointing to the contrary, is scant indeed. As far as snow/cold are concerned, very little in the way of interest?

Tbh I would take any long range outlook with a pinch of salt at the moment. The met office the other day were saying it would turn colder with frost and fog. That is yet to happen. Then there could be snow showers and colder in the east and North. That has now changed to this. Their updates changes as often as the ECM and GFS models lol. Weather is hard to predict that far ahead:-). A cold spell could come out of the blue anytime. All we can do is watch and wait

Ties with ECM monthly update. My favourite whether type after cold and snow is wet and windy, so all is not lost for me personally LOL.
