UK Outlook for Tuesday 16 Jan 2018 to Thursday 25 Jan 2018:

Sunny spells and blustery showers will extend across the UK to start this period. These showers will turn wintry in places, particularly in the north and some of them will be heavy with a risk of thunder and hail. Unsettled conditions will then continue, with further showers or longer spells of rain at times which may also give some snow, mainly in the north. Wet weather will be interspersed by brighter, showery interludes. Often it is going to be windy, with gales or severe gales at times. Overall there will be a cold feel with frost overnight under clear skies but milder spells are also expected at times, especially in the south. Later on in January we may see a slighty drier and more settled interlude, particularly across southern parts.

UK Outlook for Friday 26 Jan 2018 to Friday 9 Feb 2018:

Through this period the generally unsettled weather will most likely continue, with spells of rain and strong winds at times. While confidence is low at this stage, it looks most likely that northwestern areas will see the strongest winds and most frequent spells of rain, with southern and eastern parts perhaps seeing somewhat drier conditions. However, there may be some more settled weather in between weather systems too, bringing an increased risk of overnight frost and fog to the whole of the UK. Temperatures will be below average to start the period, but are expected to trend back towards normal towards the end of the period.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 17 Jan 2018 to Friday 26 Jan 2018:

This period will begin unsettled with sunny spells and frequent blustery showers. These are likely to be heavy with hail and thunder possible, and they will be wintry too, especially in the north where snow could accumulate for some. Longer spells of rain may affect the south at times, whilst all areas will be windy with gales or severe gales at times. For a short while, showers may slowly become lighter and less widespread, with winds easing although coastal gales are still probable. Later in the month though, we could see a return to more unsettled weather from the west. Overall, it will be cold throughout, and feeling especially so in the wind. Widespread overnight frost is likely as well as the risk of ice, especially where winds fall lighter.

UK Outlook for Saturday 27 Jan 2018 to Saturday 10 Feb 2018:

Through the end of January and into early February, the unsettled weather is likely to continue with strong winds, spells of rain and the risk of wintry showers. These conditions are likely to affect many areas at first, however with time this may become more focused across the northwest, although confidence is low at this stage. Therefore, southern and southeastern parts of the UK may well become more settled and perhaps colder, bringing an increased likelihood of more widespread frost and fog. This may spread to all areas for a time. Temperatures will be below average at first, but are expected to return closer to normal as we head into early February.

That's better! Positive additions:

a) accumulating snow in the north.

b Cold throughout.

c) Lost the drier settled interlude in the south.

This doesn't make sense to me! Unsettled at first but then settling down in south and southeast, perhaps colder too here indicating some continental influence yet temperatures will be below average at the beginning of the period?

Anyway, overall a slightly more positive update than yesterday.

UK Outlook for Thursday 18 Jan 2018 to Saturday 27 Jan 2018:

This period is likely to start off windy with sunshine and blustery showers, these giving some snow, mainly in the north, with rain or sleet likely elsewhere. Some good shelter for eastern parts of the UK which will see drier, brighter weather. Showers are likely to become less frequent and the winds ease as we head into the new working week. It'll feel cold too, with a marked wind chill, although this less becoming less noticeable as winds weaken. There remains quite a bit of uncertainty as we head into late January with the UK likely to see a mixture of short-lived spells of rain and showers, which could be wintry at times, and periods of colder, brighter, and more generally showery weather. Temperatures staying near or below normal.

I do have to smile when I read some of the comments in this and the 6-15 day outlooks UK Met issue.

I have just spent some time reading the last 2 outputs on here and on the other link.

They seem sensible and plausible (with the limited data I have) and not inconsistent in how they are dealing with the upper air pattern and subsequent surface weather. Mind you, see the main model thread, the change in their upper air outputs over the 12 hour period between the runs is quite noticeable, hence my comments about the senior man. However I still feel the outputs on their 6-30 day outlooks are as I've already described them.

Lets face it most of these models are just speculation..no one knows say further than 5 day ahead or 7 at best...alot can change this week so be prepared for some surprises and the MET office usually go over the top re temperatures to keep in with the global warming agenda

UK Outlook for Saturday 20 Jan 2018 to Monday 29 Jan 2018:

The coming weekend will be dry, cold and bright for many, with frosty starts and a few wintry showers. However persistent rain will arrive for a time, perhaps preceded by snow in the north. The start of the new working week will be fairly unsettled with strong winds and some prolonged spells of grey and wet weather, between brighter, showery conditions. Hill snow is possible in the north, although it could be quite mild in the south at times. There remains quite a bit of uncertainty as we head into late January but the UK is likely to see a mixture of short-lived spells of rain and showers, with snow possible for some, followed by periods of colder, brighter weather. Temperatures staying near or below normal.

UK Outlook for Sunday 21 Jan 2018 to Tuesday 30 Jan 2018:

Sunday will start dry, cold and bright at least in the east, with a frosty start. However persistent rain and strong winds will then arrive, perhaps preceded by snow in the north. UK Outlook for Monday 22 Jan 2018 to Wednesday 31 Jan 2018:

Mainly dry and bright on Monday, although cloudier for southwestern parts later on Monday leading to a risk of rain and strong winds in the southwest by Tuesday. The latter half of the working week will see some rather unsettled weather with a rain band moving eastward on Wednesday followed by showers. Showers are likely to turn wintry in the north of the UK. There will be milder temperatures in the south on Wednesday, otherwise this period sees temperatures around average with limited overnight frosts. There remains quite a lot of uncertainty as we head into late January but the UK is likely to see a mixture of short-lived spells of rain and showers, with snow possible for some, followed by periods of colder, drier weather. Temperatures fluctuating around average.

UK Outlook for Thursday 1 Feb 2018 to Thursday 15 Feb 2018:

There is low confidence in the UK's weather through the first half of February. However, it is likely to be characterised by a mixture of short-lived spells of unsettled weather interspersed by showery periods and longer periods of more settled and drier weather. The unsettled spells will bring cloud and rain to parts of the UK and the showery periods may give snow in the north, especially over high ground. During the settled spells, it is likely to be cold with overnight frost and fog. Temperatures during this period will fluctuate around the average for the time of year.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 23 Jan 2018 to Thursday 1 Feb 2018:

Outbreaks of heavy rain will arrive from the west on Tuesday and spread to all areas for a time on Wednesday, with any snow likely restricted to the Scottish mountains. The best of the drier and brighter weather is likely in the southeast. It will stay changeable towards the end of the working week with brighter, but showery periods interspersed with bands of cloud and rain. Again, northwestern parts are likely to see the heaviest rain with snow possible over high ground, and it will be driest in the south and east. Also, it will be windy at times particularly in the northwest. By the beginning of February it is likely to remain changeable and occasionally mild with an increased chance of more settled, colder weather, especially in the south.
