No interest in any SSW very cold conditions from the UK Met Office. Looks like our last throw of the dice is going to roll a double 1.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 24 Jan 2017 to Thursday 2 Feb 2017:

On Tuesday and Wednesday most places should be dry with sunny spells, although there is a risk of fog at times in the south. It will be windier in the west with outbreaks of rain gradually moving east. Temperatures will be quite cold for many, but milder later in the west. During the rest of the period, milder, unsettled conditions are expected to affect most of the country. Bands of rain will cross the country, interspersed with brighter, showery interludes. It will become windy with gales likely at times, especially in the north-west. The heaviest rain is likely in northern and western areas, with drier conditions in the south-east. Temperatures should be around average to mild, although there is a low chance of the south-east keeping colder than average conditions.

I am not sure that they would be commenting on something in these updates that is yet to happen and would they comment on the results of this thing that has not occurred yet at this stage anyway as they don't know what the results of this possible event are yet.I don't think the dice have been picked up yet.

Well, it is a 31 day outlook, so I disagree, if they thought there was even the slightest probability of a very cold spell due to the expected SSW, I would expect them to comment.

Put it another way, the chances of a very cold spell in this country is always very low, and the impending SSW does not appear to be making much difference to that, unless they expect an impact later in February or into March.

But that forecast only goes out as far as February 2nd?  Any affects from a SSW would be unlikely to affect our weather until after mid-February. Although, that said, I cannot see us getting any meaningful cold now this winter.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 25 Jan 2017 to Friday 3 Feb 2017:

Many should continue to be dry on Wednesday, however there is the risk of some fog particularly in the south where winds are light. Elsewhere, winds will strengthen and outbreaks of rain will slowly spread into the west during Thursday, perhaps with some snow across northern hills before temperatures gradually turn less cold. This continues into the weekend marking a change to unsettled weather through this period with bands of rain crossing the country, interspersed with brighter and showery interludes. It will be windy at times, with gales likely in the north-west and the heaviest rain is also likely across northern and western parts. Temperatures will be close to normal or occasionally mild for late January, however there is a low chance that the south-east could stay drier and colder.

UK Outlook for Saturday 4 Feb 2017 to Saturday 18 Feb 2017:

Into the start of February, confidence in the forecast reduces, however the most likely scenario is for a continuation of the unsettled weather with wet and windy spells interspersed with brighter and showery interludes. This will bring gales at times, especially in the north-west and temperatures will be close to or slightly above normal for the time of year. From the second week of February there is an increased likelihood for high pressure to return, bringing more settled weather with lighter winds and a return of overnight frost and fog. As a result, temperatures may become colder at times although the chance of very cold weather developing is considered to be low.

The rain will spread into mainland UK overnight but the south-east will probably stay dry throughout Friday. This will mark a change to generally wet and windy weather over the weekend and next week. Bands of rain will cross the country, interspersed with brighter and showery interludes. It will be windy at times, with gales likely in the north-west. The heaviest rain is also likely across northern and western parts. Temperatures are likely to be mild for late January, however there is a chance that the south-east could stay drier and colder.

UK Outlook for Monday 30 Jan 2017 to Wednesday 8 Feb 2017:

We are likely to see a gradual change to more unsettled conditions early next. Spells of rain, heavy at times, likely to affect northern and western parts in particular, where it'll be mild and windy with gales possible in the north-west. The best of any drier weather is likely in the east and south-east, where some cold nights remain possible. Similar conditions are likely as we move through into the first week of February. At the start of this period the most likely scenario is for more unsettled weather with wet and windy spells interspersed with brighter, showery interludes. This would bring gales at times, especially in the northwest. Temperatures are likely to be slightly above normal for the time of year. South-eastern parts may well stay drier and brighter. Through the second half of the period there looks to be a fine balance of high pressure over the Continent and more unsettled conditions in the Atlantic. This resulting in outbreaks of rain, milder temperatures and stronger winds in the north and west. Although the south and east possibly having drier, brighter and colder periods, with a risk of fog and frost overnight. There is a chance these conditions could develop more widely later.

Conditions will remain generally unsettled and milder through the end of next week and into the middle of February. Spells of rain are expected to cross the country, these heavy at times, particularly in western and south-western areas, where it will be windy with gales or perhaps severe gales possible. These spells of rain will be interspersed with brighter, showery and occasionally colder conditions. Hmm, have seen worse updates.  However, with low confidence will it come off and save winter 2016/17?  Going by this winter so far, you have to have your doubts but at least some interest remains for later February.

This is a bit more interesting with the centre of the low pressure to the southwest by the sound of it. Therefore allowing something cooler in the north.

Yes a considerable improvement to yesterday's update which was totally uninspiring for anything cold.

Mmmm quite surprised by this update. Granted it may be gone in the next few days, but for them to mention it means they are seeing something. Last few updates have been poor so it could swing back, who knows!

I'd say it is the most bullish met forecast of the season so far in terms of prospects of colder conditions, I suspect they are factoring into account the effects of the strat warming. Its hardly a mild forecast overall, suggestion the jet will be digging increasingly southwards with pressure rise to the north.
