Must be very hard in some aspects to get the wording right on forecasts past one week away especially on the occasion of a major change in the charts .

newspapers reading these outlooks will always pick out any juicy bits and exaggerate so the met office will always stay firm on whats in front of them .

going on past cold spells over the last 40 years or so i always look out for those words ,uncertainty and hard to shift etc ,i,m pretty sure when we arrive at this saturday some of the forecasts could be real wintry ,cheers all ,heres hoping .

Met office might get some splinters from that fence, but positive steps in there wording snow possible in South and cold harder to shift.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 13 Jan 2016 to Friday 22 Jan 2016:

A cold spell is expected to be underway around the middle of next week which will most likely last into the weekend across much of the UK. The weather will tend to vary day to day, with some dry and sunny periods, but also wintry showers which will occasionally merge to give longer spells of rain, sleet and snow. Snow will fall to low levels at times in the north, but also perhaps in the south too. Temperatures will be below average with widespread overnight frosts as well as a risk of icy surfaces. As we go through the following week it seems most probable that less cold weather will return as Atlantic weather systems try to move across the country bringing strong winds and outbreaks of rain.

UK Outlook for Thursday 14 Jan 2016 to Saturday 23 Jan 2016:

A cold spell is expected to be underway at the start of this period which will most likely last through to the start of the following week. The weather will tend to vary day to day, with some dry and sunny periods, but also wintry showers which will occasionally merge to give longer spells of rain, sleet and snow. Snow will fall to low levels at times, this most likely in the north. Temperatures will be below average, with widespread overnight frosts as well as a risk of icy surfaces. Towards the end of the period it seems most probable that less cold weather will return as Atlantic weather systems try to move across the country bringing strong winds and outbreaks of rain to many areas.

Sounds like they are going for a possible breakdown in 12-14 days time, but even so the wording of 'less cold' indicates they don't expect it to be mild just likely average, which is still a massive improvement on December.

UK Outlook for Friday 15 Jan 2016 to Sunday 24 Jan 2016:

Remaining cold until at least the start of next week, with a mix of sunshine and wintry showers. The showers falling as sleet or snow at times, especially towards the north. Snow may settle at times just about anywhere, though mainly on higher ground. Widespread frosts expected morning and night, with the added risk of icy patches following wintry showers. From the middle of next week onwards, it looks as if the cold weather may gradually give way to somewhat milder and wetter conditions from the west, though confidence is low at this stage. With a westerly flow of air likely to become established by next weekend, the wettest weather then becomes more likely towards the northwest of the United Kingdom.

UK Outlook for Monday 25 Jan 2016 to Monday 8 Feb 2016:

The United Kingdom is most likely to lie within a predominantly westerly flow of air between low pressure to the north and high pressure to the south. So the weather looks set to be rather changeable with rain and hill snow at times, especially in the northwest. However, there is a reasonable chance of some longer dry spells due to a greater likelihood of high pressure, especially in the south. Overall, temperatures are expected to range from near to above average.

That's a disappointing update for late January into early February.  High pressure to the south and low pressure to the north is not where we want to trend!

However, the updates up to yesterday where mentioning the possibility of further cold spells which is now missing. Instead they are talking abut the high pressure to the south which is concerning.

Even when we've had a major cold spell imminent, they tend not to say an awful lot. Stuff like "may turn colder with wintery showers" or  "chance of slightly below average temperatures".

UK Outlook for Saturday 16 Jan 2016 to Monday 25 Jan 2016:

The weekend will continue cold with widespread overnight frosts. Winds should be predominantly from the north or northwest, which could feed wintry showers across northern and western coasts. It should remain mostly dry inland, although there is the risk of occasional rain, sleet or snow showers. The start of next week should continue much the same, although more unsettled conditions are likely to spread in from the west from the mid week onwards, with temperatures returning to near normal. There is the potential for a period of snow before the onset of the milder conditions. The rest of the period should be changeable with showers or longer spells of rain, interspersed with some drier and brighter conditions. The wettest conditions occurring in the north and west.

UK Outlook for Sunday 17 Jan 2016 to Tuesday 26 Jan 2016:

The weekend will continue cold and bright for most with widespread overnight frosts. There will be a few sleet or snow showers, mainly in the north and east. The start of next week should continue much the same, although more unsettled conditions are likely to spread slowly in from the west early to mid week onwards, with temperatures returning to near normal. There is the potential for a period of snow before the onset of the milder conditions. The rest of the period should be changeable with showers or longer spells of rain, interspersed with some drier and brighter conditions. The wettest conditions occurring in the north and west, where it could turn windy at times.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 27 Jan 2016 to Wednesday 10 Feb 2016:

The weather looks set to be rather changeable throughout the outlook period with rain and hill snow at times, interspersed with some dry and brighter interludes. The rain and showers are likely to be heaviest and most frequent in the northwest. Further south higher than normal pressure is likely therefore drier than normal conditions are expected overall. Overall, temperatures are expected to be around normal for the time of year although day to day variations are likely depending on the weather systems passing through.

UK Outlook for Monday 18 Jan 2016 to Wednesday 27 Jan 2016:

A generally cold and dry start to the period, with widespread overnight frosts expected. The far west may see outbreaks of rain or snow at times. As we move through next week, rain from the Atlantic may move further east, with a risk of snow as it pushes into the cold air. Eastern parts should see drier conditions but with further widespread frosts likely. The last week of January will most probably see unsettled weather becoming established across the north and west, with drier, colder weather in the southeast. Temperatures are expected to be below average at first, perhaps moving towards average by the end of next week, especially in the northwest of the country.

UK Outlook for Thursday 28 Jan 2016 to Thursday 11 Feb 2016:

The end of January may see a move towards a split in the weather across the UK. Northern areas are likely to see an unsettled period, with outbreaks of rain, hill snow and strong winds, mixed with brighter, drier periods. Southern parts in contrast are expected to see drier and more settled conditions, although some rain cannot be ruled out. Overall temperatures are expected to be around normal, but possibly slightly below average in the south and east.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 19 Jan 2016 to Thursday 28 Jan 2016:

Settled conditions are expected to dominate at first with high pressure bringing generally dry, but cold conditions with widespread, and locally severe overnight frosts. The west is looking more unsettled, with rain from the Atlantic and some snow at times. As we move through next week, this rain is expected to push further east with a risk of snow as it meets the cold air. Eastern parts should be driest, but this brings the risk of further widespread frosts. The last week of January will probably see wet and windier weather becoming established across the north and west, with drier colder conditions in the southeast . Temperatures are expected to be below average at first, perhaps moving towards average by the end of next week, especially in the northwest.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 20 Jan 2016 to Friday 29 Jan 2016:

There is much uncertainty about the weather during the first couple of days, but we are currently expecting various fronts to make slow progress eastwards across the UK, bringing rain, sleet and possibly also some significant snow in places. The wettest conditions will be in the west and there is a fair chance that eastern areas will remain cold and dry until the weekend. Then from the weekend onwards the most likely scenario is for milder and unsettled conditions with showers or longer spells of rain to spread across all areas, with the heaviest rain likely to occur in the west and southwest. Although it should be generally mild there could be brief colder spells between the bands of rain
