UK Outlook for Thursday 14 Jan 2016 to Thursday 28 Jan 2016:

The main signal is for a westerly pattern to be established, with frontal systems continuing to move in from the Atlantic bringing wet and windy weather at times. The wettest weather looks set to affect western areas, with any snowfall mainly confined to higher ground in the north. Quieter interludes are likely between the wet weather, especially over southern parts where longer, drier periods are possible. Overall, temperatures are likely to be above average, although there remains a low probability of a more prolonged spell of colder weather.

UK Outlook for Monday 4 Jan 2016 to Wednesday 13 Jan 2016:

Remaining essentially unsettled across all parts throughout the period, with further bouts of wet and windy weather to come. The rain occasionally heavy and accompanied by gales, although much quieter, brighter weather can be expected in-between frontal systems. Still rather mild at times, particularly in the south, but generally feeling colder than of late with a greater risk of frost at night during quieter interludes. The rain also turning to snow at times in the north and northeast, mainly on higher ground, but with the risk increasing at low levels too later in the period as the potential for much colder weather increases for a time, especially across northeastern parts. Overall, temperatures are expected to be near or above average for January, although colder interludes are expected during settled conditions.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 6 Jan 2016 to Friday 15 Jan 2016:

Remaining unsettled across all parts for much of this period, with further spells of rain or showers for many areas. Winds will also remain fairly strong throughout early January, with the risk of gales at times, these most likely in the west of the UK. Temperatures will be nearer to normal than of late across the majority of the UK, but some milder interludes are still likely, however the north and northeast may become colder than normal at times, giving the risk of precipitation turning to snow here. Towards the middle of the month there are some signs of some drier interludes developing, with these most likely towards the south and possibly the east of the country.

UK Outlook for Saturday 16 Jan 2016 to Saturday 30 Jan 2016:

The main signal for the second half of the month is for the unsettled theme to continue across much of the UK, with frontal systems continuing to move in from the Atlantic bringing wet and windy weather at times. The wettest weather looks set to affect western areas, with any snowfall mainly confined to the north. There are some signs that southern and eastern areas may see some more prolonged drier spells developing. Overall, temperatures are likely to be close to or slightly above normal for most areas for the majority of the period.

UK Outlook for Sunday 17 Jan 2016 to Sunday 31 Jan 2016:

Towards the beginning of this period there are some signs of more drier interludes developing with these most likely towards the south and possibly the east of the country. However, even during this time, it is likely to remain changeable with spells of rain and showers interspersed with the drier weather. Later in the month it is likely that we will see a transition to more unsettled conditions again, with more frequent systems moving in from the Atlantic bringing wet and windy weather at times. The wettest weather looks set to affect western and northwestern areas, with any snowfall mainly confined to the north. Overall, temperatures are likely to be close to or slightly above normal for most areas for the majority of the period.

UK Outlook for Thursday 7 Jan 2016 to Saturday 16 Jan 2016:

Remaining unsettled across all parts of the UK for much of this period, with further spells of rain or showers. Winds will also remain fairly strong throughout early January, with the risk of gales at times, these most likely in the west and northwest of the UK. Temperatures will balance out to be close to normal for the time of year, however they will vary from day to day, typically with mild and rainy spells interspersed by colder, showery periods giving the risk of snow at times over hills in central and northern areas. Towards the middle of the month there are some signs of some drier interludes developing, with these most likely towards the south and possibly the east of the country.

Met still sticking with the theme of a drier interlude perhaps as we enter middle of the month - perhaps courtesy of heights building in from a southerly or southeasterly source - hence the south and east driest. I've noticed gone is the suggestion of snow in the north east.. hopefully we will see a more wintry flavour over coming days updates.

UK Outlook for Saturday 9 Jan 2016 to Monday 18 Jan 2016:

The weekend will be unsettled and often windy with showery conditions interspersed with some more organised spells of rain, and snow on northern hills. The heaviest rain and strongest winds occurring in the southwest and the northeast, where large rainfall totals and gales are expected. Next week will continue unsettled, with further showers or longer spells of rain, interspersed by some brief dry and brighter periods. It will become windy at times, particularly at the start of next week when severe gales are possible. Temperatures through the period are likely to be near or a little above average. However, there is the risk of a brief much colder spell at the end of next week, with frost and snow showers.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 19 Jan 2016 to Tuesday 2 Feb 2016:

A generally unsettled spell of weather is expected through this period with winds mainly coming from the west. Showers or longer spells of rain are expected, interspersed by some dry and brighter interludes. The rain being heaviest and most persistent in the west where rainfall totals are likely to be above average. The east should be more sheltered, getting the best of the drier and brighter interludes, so rainfall totals here may by slightly below average. There are indications of some longer dry spells later in January, especially in the south. Temperatures through this period should be near or a little above average for most areas.

No. As mentioned before, until the Met Office are really sure they will go with the status quo. If the ensembles means are still showing a Greenland block tomorrow this will change.

I can see that changing. Always remember the end of November 2010, 30 day update into December 2010,

Can't remember exactly? but went something like "After a cold start things will generally change to a westerly Atlantic flow with temps returning to average / slightly above"

Must admit it was only a few days later and that changed dramatically, and we all know what happened then http://blog.metoffice.gov.uk/2010/12/

We had this on the 29th

"The rain also turning to snow at times in the north and northeast, mainly on higher ground, but with the risk increasing at low levels too later in the period as the potential for much colder weather increases."

I don't like the mention of the word "brief" colder spell. I want one with some longevity!

Perhaps that little acorn will grow from ''brief much colder'' to a more prolonged much colder spell... We can hope :)

UK Outlook for Sunday 10 Jan 2016 to Tuesday 19 Jan 2016:

Sunday and Monday will be unsettled and often windy with showery conditions interspersed with some more organised spells of rain, and snow on northern hills. The heaviest rain and strongest winds probably occurring in the southwest and the northeast, where large rainfall totals and gales are expected. There is now an increased signal for a brief much colder spell around the middle of next week with widespread overnight frosts. There is likely to be a mixture of sunshine and showers, with the showers falling as sleet of snow to low levels in the north, and perhaps also in the south. Towards the end of next week unsettled and sometimes windy weather with mainly westerly winds may become re-established, although there is some uncertainty. Temperatures should return to near normal.

Been right so far though..

A little surprised given some model output and what some respected members on here think may happen, but I probably respect the Met as much as anyone so we shall see.

Don't know what models the Met Office are using but they must show something completely different to what we see. No sign of them at all joining the cold band wagon.

If the cold spell does stay for a couple of weeks they will have completely unforecast it.

Any businesses reliant on them for contingency forecasting would not have a clue about cold on the way.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 12 Jan 2016 to Thursday 21 Jan 2016:

Tuesday will be largely unsettled and often windy with showery conditions interspersed with some more organised spells of rain, and snow across northern parts, mainly high ground. The heaviest rain and strongest winds probably occurring in the southwest and northeast. From Wednesday a colder spell is expected to develop with widespread overnight frosts. There is likely to be a mixture of sunshine and showers, with the showers falling as sleet or snow to low levels in the north, and perhaps also in the south. As we go through the period unsettled and sometimes windy weather with mainly westerly winds will probably become re-established across much of the UK, although the colder conditions may be hard to shift.
