Mmm these updates read like a textbook weather book describing average weather conditions you would expect for the time of year. However, they have been very good so far this winter with there persistant unsettled theme, but make for awful reading for anyone hoping for a change to something substantially drier - the betting man will always go for unsettled weather winning out against settled weather given our maritime climate - the odds of a near equal outcome only really surfaces from about late March to early June when the atlantic traditionally runs out of steam..

I have to disagree about the met office 16 to 30 day forecast being good this winter as it has read like this for most of the season

UK Outlook for Friday 28 Feb 2014 to Friday 14 Mar 2014:

Current indications point towards unsettled conditions persisting for much of this period but not as extreme as recently. The most likely scenario would see northwestern parts of the UK affected by the most frequent spells of unsettled and windy weather. Meanwhile southern and eastern regions should tend to see longer spells of drier and brighter weather than previous weeks, although still with some periods of rain. Temperatures are likely to be close to or slightly above the seasonal average, but with some colder periods possible, and the risk of local frost and ice, and hill snow, especially in the north.

Updated: 1137 on Thu 13 Feb 2014

As you can see not correct as we in the south have been getting a soaking while northwestern uk has been drier than normal so IMO the met have failed in 16-30 range this season.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 19 Feb 2014 to Friday 28 Feb 2014:

It should be largely bright if rather cold on Wednesday, with occasional wintry showers but rain and strong winds are expected to return to the west of the UK later and into Thursday. Temperatures are likely to be around normal in the south but below in northern Britain with frost and ice likely. Thereafter the unsettled theme is likely to continue but conditions are not expected to be as stormy as recent weeks. Northwesterly winds may bring unsettled and wintry weather for a time, and temperatures will be below normal in the north of the UK. Conditions may be less unsettled into the following week with further frost and ice possible, however, a return to more changeable weather is probable by the end of February.

So this update says temperatures mostly near average and then changing temperatures near or a little below normal later on

However the BBC monthly outlook from the 24th to 2nd says; however, with south and south westerly winds, temperatures should be above the seasonal average across all areas of the UK. with it remaining unsettled

Take your pick for which one is right

always take Met over BBC, never any reply from UK Met as to why the same direction on emphasis from the senior man to everyone in UK Met leads to different versions BBC and Met, both are written, spoken by Met O staff!

But always Met before BBC, apart from the actual presentation by Met  forecasters. You will never find them following the BBC graphics web version rather than the Met output. Odd as I say but it exists.
