Indeed,  but we're slip sliding into a pretty ordinary few weeks with the emphasis still on rain albeit the colder variety.

Agreed, rain for most. But as the update mentions, an average to slightly below average temperature range in mid Jan could at least promote some hill snow for a lucky few and something a little more for the far north/north east. Not that I'm close to getting anything wintry IMBY though.

I suppose it's a few crumbs of comfort which  have been in very short supply this winter.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 28 Jan 2014 to Tuesday 11 Feb 2014:

Whilst current indications point towards changeable conditions persisting through the end of January and into early February, they are not expected to be as stormy as the start of this month. The most likely scenario during this period would see northwestern parts of the UK affected by the most frequent bouts of unsettled weather leaving southern and eastern regions tending to see the most prolonged spells of drier and brighter conditions. Some periods of colder weather are likely, particularly between weather systems, but overall temperatures may well remain near normal.

UK Outlook for Sunday 19 Jan 2014 to Tuesday 28 Jan 2014:

It will remain changeable at first with bright or sunny spells and showers, perhaps merging into more persistent rain at times. There is a chance of hill snow in northwestern parts of the UK at times too. Into the following week, a gradual transition to more unsettled weather is expected. Some dry weather is likely at first but wetter weather will spread eastwards later in the week, bringing hill snow in the north of the country and perhaps to lower levels for a time too. Temperatures will be near or slightly below average with overnight frost and patchy fog likely. Little change is expected as we head towards the following weekend, with southern parts seeing the best of any dry weather, and the most unsettled conditions further north and west.

Remaining changeable at first, with bright or sunny spells and showers. The far northeast may see some persistent rain, still with a risk of gales, while towards the southeast it may be mainly dry. That sounds frightening close to a Euro high to me.Wonderful.:(

The only positive is a respite from wind and rain for the south and east.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 21 Jan 2014 to Thursday 30 Jan 2014:

Generally rather unsettled on Tuesday with bright spells and outbreaks of rain. The far northeast of the UK may see the most persistent rain, but it is expected to turn wet across western parts later. However, more settled weather may spread from the west for a time on Wednesday. Temperatures are likely to be near or below normal with overnight frost and patchy fog. During the rest of the period, there are signs of a gradual return to more unsettled weather, especially in the north and west of the UK. This would most likely mean bands of rain, and hill snow in the north, interspersed with clearer, colder and more showery conditions, and brisk winds. Temperatures near or slightly below normal with a continued risk of overnight frost and fog.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 22 Jan 2014 to Friday 31 Jan 2014:

All parts are liable to be affected by bands of showers and rain through Wednesday and Thursday; most persistent near coasts and hill in the southwest and towards the far northeast, where it may turn wintry at times. Temperatures generally near or below normal with overnight frosts across inland areas with localised fog and ice patches possible. Fairly light winds, but stronger in the northeast. After a drier interlude on Friday, mostly for the S, a return to more unsettled weather is likely; especially in the north and west. This would mean bands of rain, with hill snow in the north, interspersed with clearer, colder and more showery conditions, and brisk winds. Temperatures near or slightly below normal with a continued risk of overnight frost and perhaps fog.

For all the talk of Shannon Entropy and pattern changes, the MetO continue with a rather uninspiring outlook which takes us into the final leg of what is an awful winter for cold and snow.

Rain will return to the northwest overnight into Friday, whilst the southeast remains largely dry. Temperatures near normal, with overnight frosts across inland areas with localised fog and ice patches. Fairly light winds, but becoming stronger in the northwest. A cold start at first, especially in central and eastern areas, with a risk of fog, frost and ice. From Sunday onwards the unsettled theme is likely to continue, especially in the north and west. Bands of rain are likely, with hill snow at times, interspersed with clearer, colder, more showery conditions, and brisk winds. Drier and brighter weather most likely in south/southeast. Edging closer and closer to a forgettable winter. The potential for a cold spell may well be there but nothing from the MetO to back this up with.

UK Outlook for Saturday 25 Jan 2014 to Monday 3 Feb 2014:

Rain will move eastwards across the UK on Saturday, clearing all but the far east, with showers following, wintry at times in the north. Another spell of rain will then push from the west on Sunday, heaviest on high ground in the west. Cold at first in the southeast, becoming mild in association with the wet and windy weather, though perhaps cold again in between the rainbands. Windy throughout, with gales in the north and west. From Monday onwards the unsettled theme is likely to continue, especially in the north and west. Bands of rain are likely, with hill snow at times, interspersed with clearer, colder, more showery conditions, and brisk winds. The best of any drier, brighter weather most likely in the south/southeast. Continuing risk of frost and fog.

UK Outlook for Sunday 26 Jan 2014 to Tuesday 4 Feb 2014:

Turning very wet and windy on Sunday, with the heaviest rain and gales, locally severe, in the northwest. Rain should clear to sunshine and squally showers on Monday, with the best of the brightness in southeastern Britain. Mild at first in the south but turning colder. Thereafter the unsettled theme is likely to continue, especially in the north and west of the UK. Bands of rain are likely, with hill snow at times, interspersed with clearer, colder, more showery conditions, and brisk winds. The best of any drier, brighter weather is most likely in the south and southeast of the country, and there will be a continuing risk of local overnight frost and fog. Rather more settled weather is possible in the far south by the end of the period.

UK Outlook for Monday 27 Jan 2014 to Wednesday 5 Feb 2014:

Probably windy and changeable at first, with sunny periods and showers or longer spells of rain, some heavy. There may be snow on northern hills, and a risk of hail and thunder. Temperatures near normal at first in the south but generally turning colder from the north. There may be a colder interlude around midweek, with easterly winds and wintry showers in the northeast of the UK. However, a return to westerly winds is expected from the end of the week, with further outbreaks of rain, hill snow in northern Britain and strong winds. There will be some drier and brighter weather too, the best of this most likely in the south and southeast of the country, and there will be a continuing risk of local overnight frost and fog.
