Looks like the latest Met Office has played down the very unsettled theme for next week to rather unsettled in the Northwest. This would indicated a rise of pressure to the south of the UK with a feed of some continental air into some parts of SE Britain. So less cold rather than mild is the outlook.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 29 Jan 2013 to Thursday 7 Feb 2013:

Rather unsettled throughout much of this period, with spells of rain, and occasional hill snow in the north, interspersed with clearer, showery interludes, for many areas. The heaviest, and most prolonged spells of rain will tend to be in the west, with the best of any drier, brighter weather towards the east. It will also be windy at times, with a risk of gales, especially in the north, perhaps even severe gales in the far west and northwest. Generally mild at first, then temperatures falling close to the seasonal average in many parts, although it will often feel cold in the wind and rain. However, southern areas could remain on the mild side, with overnight frost mainly confined to inland shelter.

An average start to February by the looks of it which isn't surprising really

UK Outlook for Sunday 3 Feb 2013 to Tuesday 12 Feb 2013:

A cold and frosty start for many on Sunday, before quickly turning cloudier with outbreaks of rain spreading across the UK, with perhaps some snow across the higher ground initially. The unsettled conditions are then likely to dominate the UK throughout much of the week with showers or longer spells of rain interspersed by some drier and clearer conditions. The rain is likely to be heaviest and most persistent across the north and west, and will also be accompanied by strong or occasionally gale force winds. Temperatures near normal or mild during the unsettled conditions but perhaps falling just below with a risk of frost during the clearer interludes. Towards the middle of the month, it is likely to remain unsettled, but probably turning colder than of late.

Hi everyone I just wanted to put this up because I read a post earlier that said that the met office had gone for zonal next week. I can't highlight the post because I am on iPhone, but if I could draw people's attention to the beginning of the update they do mention snow over northern hills and at the end it mentions probably getting colder than if late. So my interpretation would be that they are are going for a blocked outlook.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 5 Feb 2013 to Thursday 14 Feb 2013:

Tending to turn colder and rather unsettled across the UK throughout much of this period. There will be a mixture of sunny spells and blustery showers, which will turn increasingly wintry, though probably falling as rain or sleet in the south at first. There is the potential for some accumulations of snow in places exposed to the north and northwest. It will be windy across the UK, with severe gales possible in the northwest. The best of the sunshine will be towards the east and southeast of the UK. Generally rather cold, with overnight frost in inland shelter at first, becoming more widespread throughout next week. Towards the end of the period, there is a good deal of uncertainty, but perhaps becoming drier and less cold for a time.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 6 Feb 2013 to Friday 15 Feb 2013:

Conditions tending to remain a little colder than average for much of the period. A fair amount of dry and bright weather across the UK at first, but always the potential for some rain or showers, the showers especially affecting eastern coastal areas, where they could be heavy and thundery with hail and snow. A few wintry showers elsewhere too, particularly Irish Sea coasts and parts of the Midlands at first, but tending to become confined to eastern coasts towards the end of next week. Windy at first, with gales in exposed western areas. Widespread overnight frosts with some icy patches. From the middle of the period, conditions look likely to become a little more unsettled, with temperatures returning to nearer normal, though still perhaps a touch below in places.

UK Outlook for Friday 8 Feb 2013 to Sunday 17 Feb 2013:

Remaining cold on Friday but less windy than the previous few days. Still some wintry showers near the east coast, and some western parts perhaps cloudier with a little rain or hill snow. Brighter elsewhere after a frosty start. A similar set-up continues through Saturday and Sunday. During the following week some bands of cloud and rain will spread slowly eastwards across the UK, with some snow on hills, and possibly also temporarily to lower levels in the east. Turning less cold in the west. Later next week onwards into the following weekend some bright spells are expected, but also some unsettled weather at times, most likely to the north and west where any showers may turn wintry at times. Temperatures then close to or just below average.

That is basically a slap in the face for those supporting ECM. They don't even suggest any uncertainty or possibility of an Easterly flow so totally dismissive all ECM operational output the last couple of days but at least they do suggest weak blocking to the East for a time.

UK Outlook for Saturday 9 Feb 2013 to Monday 18 Feb 2013:

Most areas remaining on the cold side this weekend. Some bright spells for many areas, but also some wintry showers in some North Sea coastal areas. Meanwhile parts of western and southwestern UK are likely to be cloudier with some rain, sleet and hill snow, especially later this weekend. Then, next week western parts of the UK are likely to continue to see spells of cloudier weather with rain, hill snow and, perhaps, some snow temporarily to lower levels. Elsewhere conditions will tend to be colder and brighter, though some parts may catch a few wintry showers. Looking ahead to the weekend after next and the start of the following week, conditions most likely to be a little colder than average, with northwestern parts most at risk of unsettled weather.

UK Outlook for Sunday 10 Feb 2013 to Tuesday 19 Feb 2013:

Sunday will likely see spells of rain and sleet in western areas spreading southeast across England and Wales. There is an increasing risk of some significant snowfall in places, particularly over higher ground, but also to some lower-levels. Further north, it should be drier and brighter with a few wintry showers, especially towards North Sea coasts. Any remaining rain or snow in southern areas clearing away through Monday. Then most areas dry, bright and cold with overnight frosts and an ongoing risk of icy stretches. Probably turning more unsettled again from mid-week with outbreaks of rain, sleet or snow spreading southeastwards. Perhaps becoming a little less cold but staying rather unsettled for the remainder of the period, with an ongoing risk of sleet and snow, especially across higher ground.

It is likely to be cloudy for many central, southern and western areas through Monday with outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow clearing slowly south as the day progresses. Elsewhere, it should be drier and brighter with a few wintry showers, especially towards North Sea coasts. Most places are likely to be mainly dry, bright and cold through Tuesday with overnight frost and ice an ongoing risk. Gradually turning more unsettled again from mid-week onwards with outbreaks of rain spreading southeastwards, with the chance of this turning to sleet and snow at times, especially over hills. Perhaps becoming a little less cold but staying rather unsettled for the remainder of the period, with an ongoing risk of sleet and snow, especially across higher ground.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 12 Feb 2013 to Thursday 21 Feb 2013:

On Tuesday, most places are likely to remain cold, but should be mainly dry and bright, with any spells of snow over the far south soon clearing. Perhaps a few wintry showers developing later, especially towards North Sea coasts. Overnight frost and ice developing across most parts. UK Outlook for Wednesday 13 Feb 2013 to Friday 22 Feb 2013:

Most areas should be dry at first on Wednesday, although a few wintry showers are still possible in some eastern parts of the UK. Outbreaks of rain and hill snow are likely to spread in from the Atlantic throughout the rest of the forecast period. Although the eastward extent of any rain is relatively uncertain, western and, especially, northwestern areas are quite likely to see rain at times, this potentially persistent and heavy in places. Eastern and southeastern parts are more likely to see drier, brighter periods, though here temperatures probably often a little below average for the time of year. Elsewhere conditions later this week should be a little milder than of late, but will perhaps turn colder again later next week.

Cloudy and windy with rain and hill snow spreading from the west across the UK on Thursday. Sunshine and showers for most on Friday, driest towards the south and east. Temperatures below average at first, but becoming nearer normal in the west. Into next weekend, rather unsettled at first, especially in the west and northwest where it will be windy, the best of any drier and brighter spells towards the southeast. The brighter conditions will become more widespread later that weekend. Temperatures close to or below average. Through the following week, some wet and windy spells in the north and west, less unsettled in the south and east, with temperatures here probably below average for the time of year.
